Terrible and Depressing

Hi all,

I have been reading this forum for months and have seen different progress from different people which in turn makes me want to get electrolysis done. My hair depresses me. I will explain.

Being an acne sufferer, who only recently stopped getting it, but having to deal with many marks on the face (pits, scars, and actual colour difference), I never really thought of my hair that much until my acne started disappearing. I can see that from the pits a hair emerges. The thing is, my hair and body is full of hair, but for example, the hair on my face is thin, but there are loads.

The many thin hairs some together and make me feel very hairy. I have tried to take a picture but the marks left from acne (which I believe will heal in time) make my face seem worse. I think pictures probably make it stand out more but I will post them to get your opinion on the hair.

My problem is I have very little money and after having a free consultation and being pleased with what I experienced, I don’t have enough to go on, and it is very difficult to find a job at this time. I don’t know what to do. Buy a package and save money, or pay each time I go? Thank you for reading everyone.

How ever you decide to pay, it will cost you money. I would get a few treatments and pay as you go at first. You need some money behind you to go as fast as possible in the first six months for at least one area. If you want to quit and the electrologist has $500 in the kitty, she/he will not refund it if you change your mind. It is a bummer not having the cash behind you so you can go full speed. You will need to break this down and focus on one area. Finding a job to pay for this may be harder than the actual electrolysis process. Document your skin condition with a picture before you start electrolysis, okay??? Laser may be a good idea for your legs if yo are a good candidate.

Yes I will document it hopefully.

Laser does sound good - is it painful?

My face, body has thin hairs but my legs have coarse hair, whilst my arms have thing hairs but dark.

You may want to see an endocrinologist to run some tests to make sure you don’t have PCOS or other hormonal conditions that are causing both the acne and the hair. They may put you on medication that prevents future growth.

Laser only works on COARSE DENSE hair. So your legs, bikini, underarms, etc would be great for it. For the rest, you need electrolysis.

Most laser clinics take credit cards. Some electrologists do as well. So at the very least, that’s an option.

Please read our FAQs at the link below to find out more on how to get good results with laser.

Laser does hurt (if it doesn’t, you’re not getting effective treatments). You’re killing follicles. But it’s not unbearable and there are numbing creams you can use. You should be willing to put up with some pain and discomfort if it’s important to you to get rid of this hair permanently.

Electrolysis in good hands is not very painful at all, especially with newer epilators. It’s all about finding a good electrologist.

Laser is way more painful than electrolysis in my experience, although I’m new to both. Take LAgirl’s advice and you’ll be fine.

Okay so now I am thinking instead of getting electrolysis done on my legs I should get laser? I will post about it in the other section. I have been to the docs who said I don’t have PCOS and hopefully I don’t.

If you can find someone good, you can have easy hair removal and avoid the potential problems with L.A.S.E.R.

Of course, if speed is your main concern, then you may want to do L.A.S.E.R. and “switch to electrolysis” when you reach the point of diminishing returns.

James, there are “potential problems” with BOTH laser and electrolysis if someone doesn’t know what they’re doing. Electrolysis is not any safer from issues if that’s the case. And laser is not any more problematic if it’s not.

What kinds of issues?

Should I take a pic of areas like my leg and my arm to show what the hair is like?

In the meantime what should I do with leg hairs? I don’t like the idea of shaving. Is trimming any good?

You want to trim your leg hair?? It will take longer than if you just shave. It is the same thing as shaving, except that it may be less harsher than shaving on the skin. The disadvantage is, you cannot cut the hair short enough to match a shaving outcome.

Yes, you can trim your leg hair.

Hi,

Just wanted to suggest, if you do want to trim the hair, you can trim using electric trimmers. I have a trimming attachment with my epliator, though I don’t use it for epilating the hair, I do use the trimmer.

ihavehair - trimming and shaving are the same thing but shaving is just closer to the skin. I would recommend shaving it perhaps in the same direction as the growth instead of against it.
Just please make sure you exfoliate regularly and moisturise everyday to keep your skin in good condition.

I would 100% recommend Laser for legs, bikini and underarms. If you need to be rid of aaaall the hair, you will need to finish off with electrolysis. I am doing this for my underarms as I don’t want to have to shave them at all. But with my legs, I am quite happy with whatever reduction the Laser treatments can give me. Bikini area reduction has been fantastic with Laser.

For your hair and other areas with finer hair, electrolysis is the way to go. Or for a temporary measure, try bleaching (boots hair lightener). I bleach my collarbone to chest area regularly and full torso occasionally, it suits me fine and I although I otherwise have dark hair and a lot of it, I’m content with not having it removed.

I understand they are the same or similar but I am scared shaving will make the hair worse. I have read on here it’s an old folkes tale but what about those people who have really experienced it? Lol I am being over-cautious aren’t I?

I have an attachment on my epilator too  I normally use it to trim my underarms and then use the epilator to completely remove the hair.

Noted.

I don’t ever take pictures but the other day I took a close up picture just to see how bad my skin is and it looks horribly horrible. I think after electolysis/laser, I will still have a long way to go before my skin looks normal (face) because of the damage left from acne. Does Sharon’s clinic have any treatments for this?

Thanks all for your reply.

Hi,

I think it is good that you have these expectations, but I know that others don’t have much disruption in the condition of their skin; for example, stopit seems to get redness which subsides quickly after treatment and then there is no other sign of the treatment afterwards - is this right, stopit?

Parkside have a website: Parkside Beauty Centre

From what I have been told lately, less is more. I have tried this out and have found my skin is healing much better than it was when I was applying my usual daily products. It all depends I think on your skin type; oily, dry, combination, senstive, resistant, pigmented… The best thing you can do really is if you are spending a long time outdoors to use an spf at all times to avoid any marks getting darker, and otherwise to use just what is needed. Everyone is different, so you may well benefit greatly from some sort of treatment, maybe someone can suggest one that will address your concerns. HTHs.

It gives the illusion that there is more hair because you are cutting the hair off at the thickest part which is located near the skin skins surface. The nice, soft tapered part of the hair is at the end of the hair that is seen as it grows to it’s determined length. The old wives tale persists no matter how many studies are done and no matter how many times we repeat this fact here on hairtell. Don’t fall for this. It’s not true.

If you want to build up your skin, make sure that you are getting enough vitamins A, C, E, D-3 and water. Para Amino Benzoic Acid (PABA) will help with pigment issues as well.

If you smoke, or spend time with people who do, stop it, as this habit robs your skin of its elasticity, lowers your immune system response and drains your body of what Vitamin C you have. Smokers can’t build great skin.

If I had a dime for all the people who blamed the lines around their mouth on their electrolysis, and conveniently forgot about their 2 pack a day smoking habit, I would be a millionaire.

I don’t think electrolysis will make my skin worse, just that I am hoping it will improve the look of my face but also because I have so many marks from acne, I will still need to give some time for that part of my skin to heal. Sigh. I feel like my outerbody just likes to be ugly.

Thank you, I won’t fall for this and I guess I will shave for now.

A question:

The hairs are really long e.g. on my legs and arms, so when I go for electrolysis, should I trim them in order to make it easier for the electrolysis or should I leave it like that?
