Men shaving legs?

Thanks Veinlover, I really do like not having all the hair on my body. So far I’ve only had a few comments about my legs, but nothing to really get upset about. Yes I guess I’m trying to defend the fact that I do want to shave my legs, and get that smooth look. It’s so close to that now, I mean I’ve got them trimmed so close to smooth, I should just shave them. It takes me almost an hour to get them just the right way. Peach fuzz is all that’s left, so I need to take that away too. Thanks for all your advice.

If you trim your leg hair short, people will notice that too. So you might as well shave them clean. It is way more comfortable and gives better muscle definition. It will definitely make your muscles look bigger too.

As for arms, I shave mine too. I am having laser hair removal on them so eventually I will not have to shave them, or at least shave them as often. IMHO if any guy works out with weights and has any arm muscle development at all, he should shave his upper and lower arms. It makes a huge difference in how muscular they look. Besides, it just doesn’t look right to have a clean shaven chest, legs, and upper arms, only to have a rug on the lower arms. Most women don’t shave their arms, so it is hard for anyone to argue that arm shaving is “girly.”

I noticed that in today’s Target ad the model for the Champion Shirts and Shorts had zero arm and leg hair. Usually they will have some lower arm and leg hair. I mention this because it could be a sign that arm and leg shaving is becoming more mainstream.

RJC2001

What I have noticed becoming more mainstream is men getting rid of their underarm hair. Most that do it are not embarassed to raise their arms to show off their beautiful smooth pits and most girls agree that the pits look more attractive.

This is my pet peeve, so I hope so. I think all men, just like women, should remove their underarm hair in its entirety. It does nothing positive I can think of. It looks bad, and smells bad. Plus, if you do happen to have good upper body muscle, I think the biceps/lat area is absolutely beautiful, and a bunch of soggy pit hair totally ruins that beauty. OK, now I’ll say what I really think…

Seriously, think how many ads for women’s fashion involve the woman showing her nice, smooth pits. They do that because it is sexy. Well, if men shaved, it would be sexy on them too, at least if they are in shape. I suppose you need to shave your chest to go along with it, but that is rather common. I can’t believe how many men shave their chest, but leave their pit hair. And, when it sprouts out all from under their arms, even when their arm is against their side, it is even more disgusting.

By the way, I’m not gay, and am not looking to get turned on my men’s armpits, but I just think men look more attractive that way. Even my wife, who hates my shaved legs. would never touch my underarms until I shaved them, and then she loved it.

Hey, I’m doing my part to promote hair-free armpits! Thanks to electrolysis, my armpits are just about totally hairless. In the summer I spend most of the weekends shirtless out in my boat. So it’s very easy for everyone at the marina to see my smooth armpits. I proudly display them when I’m working on the boat and laying out in the sun. Nobody seems to pay much attention to them. I do notice a lot of women, especially the younger ones, do a double take when they see my clean shaven legs. They usually smile so I think they like it.

BTW, most guys between the ages of 20 and 50 are shaving their chests. Not that many of them have naturally hairless chests LOL! And almost all of college aged guys are shaving their chests. This at least applies to the boating population. It may not be as common among golfers, but hell I don’t golf so I wouldn’t know.

Keeping your armpits hairless really pays off in the summer. It helps to keep you cooler, just as much as shaving your chest. And as someone else mentioned it really feels great when you go swimming!

RJC2001

I’m the one who said smooth armpits are awesome when you go swimming. Perhaps not now, but the first few times was one of the most sensual experiences I’ve ever had, seriously. Underarms are very sensitive anyhow, and feeling the cool water on them for the first time in 20 years was amazing. You don’t realise how much the hair insulates them. I presume that was its original function, there are lots of large blood vessels that go through there, and perhaps pit hair is to keep the blood warm, I don’t know. That would make more sense if people hung from trees like monkees, of course. Proof of evolution.

I’m totally amazed more people notice your smooth legs than armpits. I agree many men shave their chests, though I doubt it is a majority. Lots of college guys who live near beaches do. They probably don’t in landlocked locales, or Chicago in winter. And, I GUARANTY they all leave their pit hair just as nature intended. I can’t remember the last time I saw chest hair in a magazine, movie, or TV. And, its funny when you see a guy who has obviously dark, thick body hair with a totally smoooth chest, and no one seems to think a thing of it; but if he shaved his legs, that would be different. Now which hair is uniquely male: chest or legs? Chest or pits? Go figure.

If you have the body of someone who works out, I can see that people will just assume that is why you shave your legs, but the pits are another matter. I’m glad no one notices, however, because I rarely show mine, except in a gym. I think its fascinating how younger women love shaved men, and older ones are still hung up on it. Since I’m about to be single, I guess I better aim for younger ones, which is OK by me. In fact, it would be interesting if being shaved helps with being attractive to younger women. I’ll bet it does. That and muscles. Now I just have to cut a bit of fat and I’m all set…

RJC, How long did it take to clear your pits? I’m going to do it as well, I’ve found an electroysist, who charges $75 per hour, which seems fair, especially here, which is a very expensive location. She uses the combined machine, and seems very experienced with men and women. I will start with my pits, and if that goes well, do my back next. I don’t have a particularly great amount of pit hair, but there is no way to shave it really well, as it tends to grow sidewise, and is rather thick hair, so you always can see a bit after shaving. Plus, if its warm, it sometimes gets irritated. I’d love to have it gone altogether. It would be wonderful for the pits to be perfectly smooth, with no sign of stubble, I absolutely love it when a woman runs her fingers or kisses my pits, but they have to be smooth (for whatever reason I never smell there, so kissing is not gross). How painful is electrolysis in that sensitive area? The first time she doesn’t use any form of topical anesthesia, as she wants to see how the skin reacts. After that she will. I can inject lidocaine in the area, it is small, if needed, but that seems rather extreme. Is it worse than tweezing out hairs? I can’t wait to have this done, but at the moment haven’t the cash. She acts like even this small area may take a while. I’d also like to do my lower arms, as for some reason they are prone to irritation, far more than my legs. Maybe because I haven’t been shaving them that long, I don’t know.

I have my pits done at the same time as my chest so it is hard to give a specific time. I would say it takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to totally clear just the pits. I have never had them lasered so there was a considerable amount of coarse hair. As a result, the area was somewhat painful but tolerable. The crook of the armpit where the arm meets the side of the chest is the most painful. My practitioner uses a numbing cream for all electrolysis treamtments but she does not use it for laser.

The pain doesn’t last that long. After the treatment she rubs Aquaphor on my armpits and chest and that helps prevent scabbing. Plus it feels good too!

Having the lower arms done would be a good idea too. My practitioner says that there is less scabbing on the beard and other areas that are not constantly being rubbed by clothing. Since I work out with weights and have well developed pecs, my T shirts would rub on my nipples and cause a little bit of scabbing. It is not a big deal and they heal right up. I would guess there would be no such problem with the lower arms if you wear short sleeved shirts.

Shaving works well on the armpits, but you will be amazed by how much better if feels when the hair is permanently removed.

Hi paul0

The bumps and ingrowns will eventually go away as your skin gets used to shaving. How long this takes depends on how you shave and how often. I use an electric razor on my legs and with me it took about 2 to 3 weeks before all the irritation disappeared. I found that using a blade caused more razor bumps than an electric razor.

One tip I got from RJC2001 quite some time ago was to shave every day with an electric razor. This helped me in 2 ways. The first was my skin got used to shaving quicker and the second was a big time saving. If you let the hair grow out for a few days in between you need to spend more time to properly clear the hair than if you do a quick shave every day.

The thighs and upper legs in general are where you will experiance bumps and irritation more. If you are using a blade, I would reccomend trying an electric razor instead. The “Coolskin” type with lotion dispensing are ideal for legs.

Hi Veinlover

I am definitly from South Africa, but I am one of those globetrotting ones who refuses to stay in his own country for more than a few months at a time.

I am in Florida now as I write this and I have been looking around here to see what the shaving trend is like with the guys. So far I have seen a few bodybuilders on the beach with shaved legs and one guy of about your age while I was shopping who also shaved.

Definitly fewer guys here shave than is SA. As you correctly say one must factor in that a lot of people are on vacation from other (maybe colder) places, so shaving for comfort would not occur to them.

For the most part nobody notices my shaved legs, but I have had a few double takes from some people which never happens in SA. I think it is more out of interest than anything else. It will be interesting to see if I get any comments / compliments etc. while I’m here.

I always wondered how the Coolskin would work on body hair. When you use an electric, do you use the Coolskin? How does it compare to the dry Norelcos like the Spectra and Quadra? Didn’t you use a dry Norelco before? I would think using the Coolskin would be expensive as a lot of the gel or lotion would be used for shaving legs.

RJC2001

Hi RJC

I don’t have experiance with the Norelco razors and models you mention. The Coolskin is expensive if you dispense all over the legs, which I don’t do. I find the moisturising gel is good on the inner thighs which have always caused me some form of redness or irritation and this is where I use the dispensing pump mostly.

I then rinse the razor well under hot fast flowing water and do the rest without the gel which is my current “combination” method.

Hi RJC

One thing I forgot to mention above is that I did use a dry Phillips / Norelco for many years and it did a good job. The redness and irritation on the inner thighs I treated with hypoallergenic creams in those years as per some of my earlier posts. Now luckily the coolskin seems to have combined the 2 steps into a simpler shaving proceedure, with the benefit of being completly waterproof making for easy cleaning under a flowing tap after use. All in all I would say good product development and progress from Phillips can be said.

Thanks for the info. Do you find the Coolskin to give a closer shave, or about the same, as the dry Norelco?

RJC2001

Hi RJC

The Coolskin gives a much closer shave than the older dry versions provided you use the gel pump. It is as good as a blade shave with use of the gel dispensing feature. Facial hair and difficult leg areas like the kness, thighs and shins are much easier as the floating heads are much more flexible than the earlier version.

Charge time is also much better and is usually complete in 1 hour, giving you some 55 hours shaving time as a max. You won’t always get this time depending on how you use the product, but it is an improvement on the overnight or 16 hour charge time of the older versions.

I finally did it, I shaved my legs, and it looks so cool. I love the way it feels, smooth hairless legs. I work at an amusement park, and no one said a thing about my legs. I guess it’s becoming more common for guys to have legs that are hairless. I’ve seen quite a few guys in the park that have no leg hair. That makes me feel more comfortable, to know guys are going hairless more and more. It should be that way, why should guys have to look like hairy apes? More women are demanding their guys have little to no body hair. It’s only fair, if females got to shave, us males can do the same. I will not go back to having hairy legs, I like the way they look. Thanks guys!!

Congrats, tuvock! We knew you would like the results. Once you go hairless, there’s no going back! Maybe we’re at the beginning of a trend, who knows?

RJC2001

Congratuations, Tuvock, you sound so HAPPY, which is the most important part. I remember how I felt the first time I finally brought myself to just shave them altogether, and it was wonderful. I loved how my skin felt in my jeans, and the cool sheets were simply amazing against my smooth, sensitive legs. A lot of the novelty wears off, and your skin gets less sensitive, but I still love the feeliing of freshly shaved legs most of all, and they always look wonderful to me. Plus, the feel so nice against a woman’s soft shaved legs, very sensual, you will see. Just be sure to keep them stubble free, it will only take you a few minutes in the shower, as you will get good at it. Since it is now almost summer where I live, I’m looking forward to shorts, and being able to actually see and enjoy my legs soon. I’m sure no one will notice, enough guys now shave their legs it isn’t that novel, like it was 15 years ago when I first shaved them. I can’t imagine you will ever go back to having them hairy again. Even if someone does comment, just let it go, they probably are jealous, as most men wouldn’t have the courage to be just a bit different. In my experience, women will love your smooth legs, and when you get a bit of a tan on them, they will look fantastic. Good luck. As you say, if we expect women to shave, it only is fair we do our bit as well.

Hi tuvock

Well done. Remember to keep up your shaving schedule. It’s easy to let it go sometimes when you are very busy, but as RJC pointed out to me a long time ago it helps to shave every day and save a lot of time that way. You can leave it a few days but then it takes much longer to shave properly than a quick buzz or blade once a day.

Stuart

I just shave my legs whenever I shower, using the Venus (Vibrance is the latest), so I do it most, but not all, days. 2 days is no big deal, but if you let it go long, as the guys say, it will be much more of a hassle, more like the first time, it will also hurt more. Your legs will add 5-10 minutes to your shower, that’s it, so it is no big deal to do them then. If you use an electric, I would think before your shower is good, as you need to be totally dry, but I’m not experienced with that. You can’t shave after a workout using an electric, as you won’t be totally dry for some time, unless you have an electric that works in the shower, as some do. Anyhow, you will get a routine down, and find it to be very easy to keep up, but keep up you must. Plus, men will get stubbly after about a day, at most two, no matter how well you shave. Women hate stubbly legs. In fact, I hate stubble on women, so its only fair.

Hi RJC

A tip you might find usefull if you use the Coolskin is to shave wet and using soap as a lubricant for this razor. I have been trying out some new methods and because this razor is fully submersible I found this method to give a very close shave, comparable to a blade razor.
