Men shaving legs?

Hi Josh

Having coarse dark hair on my legs is what started me trimming as well. I have blonde hair, so the contrast didn’t suit me at all. If my leg hair had turned out relativly light and fine like a lot of blonde haired guy’s do then it may have been different. As it was from about 16 onwards it was actually embarressing to wear shorts and I got the looks and comments from the opposite angle. Trimming made a big difference in my high school days because then shaving was not on either, but it looked a lot better.

After leaving school I shaved once as I spoke about earlier in other posts at 19. I should have stuck with it then because nobody noticed. My skin and hair colouration suit shaved legs I think, because today it is my normal accepted look. I agree that trimming is your best answer, since you tried shaving and that didn’t work socially. Like RJC says lasor will probably be better and save you time trimming. I have had some lasor and this has made my leg hair a bit thinner and cut down on shaving time.

You said you shave your arms and trim your legs - but leave your chest hair. It seems to me to have smooth arms but hair everywhere else might look a little uneven.

My dilemma is whether the chest and arms should match. I agree with you that I think people will notice shaved legs more than anything else. I have shaved my arms four times and no one has noticed either. I’d like to go the laser route but I’m nervous about making it permanent.

Hi all.

Its great to see that i’m not the only one that shaves their legs here without a proper reason too.

I’m 14 years old and I decided to shave my legs because i wanted them to be cleaner and smooth. I have been doing them for about half a year now.

I go to a all boys school that is full of sports people who shave their legs for different reasons… I’ts great to see really because the people that dont shave are concitered to be “wierd” not the ones that do.

My parents beg me to stop shaving my legs but I never will! As soon as I let them grow they become long and thick and black and ugly… And my legs look plain gross! And I like the look of smoothness and the feeling too much to stop.

Other peoples reactions are not that bad. Some people take a seccond look and because of my age people assume that I havn’t got my leg hairs yet. And I have even persuaded a few people to start shaving. They still shave daily to this very day.

Thanks all

Hi

Welcome to the forum! Congratulations on your decision and the courage to stay with it! I am not sure why your parents are against you shaving your legs, but in school you seem to be fine with it. All I can say is I wish I had done the same at your age, but that was a different time and guys who shaved then were not accepted as normal.

Now eveything is very different and it is perfectly normal for guys to shave their legs. You obviously have found out the benefits from what you say. Maybe your parents have some difficulty with this, because they don’t expect it, but that was the same from my late father too. After I stopped trimming and shaved smooth though he accepted that and even supported my decision saying it looked better.

As I have said on this forum, many young guys here in SA shave for sport, appearence etc. It’s a newer trend here and very much the thing to do amoung the younger people (and many old guys like me ).

Be patient with your parents and explain to them that this is normal. If need be show them some threads on this forum to help introduce how many men do this today. It’s always hard for some people to accept what they don’t expect, but it’s your body and you deserve the right to feel comfortable with smooth legs.

Thanks Stuart.

I took up on your advice in a big way as to my parents ideas about leg shaving.

First I handled my mum. My town being rather a small place and it is always very very very hot so people go to the main shopping centre to cool down in airconditioned comfort… And most of the boys from my school were down there.

So every time I saw one I pointed out their legs to her… And she asked why I did and I told her my reasons… So now she is off my case!

Now my dad… Wasn’t so easy at first. I showed him this actuall thread. He was persuaded. Then to take the matter further I explained why I do.
Also i showed him pics of footy players (he is obsessed with football) and he noticed that they all shaved.

So then both my parents think it ok.

Now I can say that I will shave forever

Hi Shavedlegs

I’m glad you worked things our with your parents. They also have questions that deserve answers and you did a good job from what you describe.

Because most boys from school also shave, you will probably not encounter any social problems. Try it for some time (I also reccomend it forever BTW).

Sports make shaved legs sense and it’s good to listen to instinct with physical activities where you can injure yourself.

Good Luck!

Yes, I intend to do it for life!!! Shaving does not cause any social problems for me. If anything it helps to get lady friends… There is another reason to do it…

Thanks all

Hi yall, I’m new here.

I’m 16 years old, and I just recently started shaving my legs (but I’ve been shaving my pits and pubes quite a while before though). I absolutely love the silky smoothness of my legs. They feel awesome. Words can’t describe how awesome they feel.

The only thing I really don’t like about shaving though is the fact that I have to do it very often. I’ve been thinking about waxing my legs, but I’m broke right now, and I hear it’s quite painful. I heard that I could make my own wax at home and do it (or this sugaring?), but I’m still not sure if I’m going to do it.

I also recently started lifting weights and doing ab exercises to get my body more toned.

I really want to get my leg/pit hair permanently removed, but I have no money right now.

As of now, no one in my family knows that I shave my legs. I’m not sure how they would react.

Also, a few days after shaving, I get a lot of red bumps near the upper thigh area, but they slowly fade away if I grow my hair out. Is this normal?

Akram:What area are you from? There might be a school nearby where you could get some of that removal done at a very low price. I commend you for starting at an early age to make yourself comfortable with less hair. I can tell you that permanent removal of that pit hair will make you feel like a million dollars.

That’s a pretty good strategy to shave your legs right when the hair starts growing. That way nobody will know that you’re shaving.

Has anyone in your family said anything about you shaving your pits?

The red bumps are normal. If you shave regularly, your skin will adapt. Use a good quality razor like an M3 Power or Mach3 Turbo and a good shave gel like Aveeno Positively Smooth. If you shave in the shower, a body wash like Suave (Moisturizing Formula) will work great, plus it’s cheap.

The results of your weightlifting will look much better without the hair!

I second what Barrester says about permanent pit hair removal. It feels great and you won’t have perspiration stains on your shirts.

barrester, I live in the Arlington area in Texas. How much does it usually cost to have your pit hair permanently removed?

RJC2001, I think my mom noticed one time, but she didn’t really comment on it. I use a Mach3 razor and some Colgate shaving cream.

I was thinking about trying an epilator. My mom has one of them. Would it be safe to use?

Today, I decided to shave my legs in the shower (it’s been two days since my last shave). I used the Mach3 razor that I used last time, and some Colgate shaving cream. I applied the shaving cream to the lower part of my right leg, and it burned when I used the razor. I then shaved the upper part of my right leg wtih the cream, and it didn’t burn. What the hell? I then decided to use regular bar soap for my other leg, and it didn’t burn at all. Are my legs sensitive to the shaving cream? Also, how long should I use each razor before changing the blades?

Now that my legs are shaved again, they feel awesome. Especially after I out some lotion on them.

Its hard for me to relate as to how much it cost to remove just the pit hair; since I would often get 2 hour treatments with 2 operators working at once and working in various area at the same session. However why don’t you just start and do as much as you can afford from time to time and before you know it you will have the result you will treasure for life. If you had the money to get it all done at once I think a good operator could do a substantial clearing in about 4 hours per pit. Multiply that by the operators hourly rate and you will have a estimate of the cost. I wasn’t very hairy to start with so my estimate could be off.The main thing is getting started.

The Mach3 is a very good razor. You may want to try the M3 Turbo or the M3 Power. The M3 Power results in the least irritation.

Colgate shaving cream isn’t all that great. It doesn’t provide much lubrication to prevent razor burn. I have found the best gels to be Aveeno Positively Smooth and Edge Pro Gel (heavy beard formula). The Gillette gels are OK, not quite as good as the Aveeno. I am not at all surprised that the soaps worked better. My favorite product for leg shaving when I blade shave out of the shower is Moore Unique Hydroglide Shaving Solution .

The issue with shaving is that it is noticeable, and it grows back with stubble and tends to itch. In my opinion, waxing would seem to be a more reasonably priced substitute to laser - which is very expensive - but I don’t know how many salons do leg waxing for men. Seems like more men do chest and back. Waxing also has its downside as sensitive skin can be a problem.

Personally, I see legs as not as big an issue as say the upper body (chest, back, and maybe arms).

Hmm…Yesterday I tried some Gillette shaving gel, and it worked pretty good (it was a very smooth shave), but as soon as I got out of the shower…My legs were burning beyond imagination. Burning and itching at the same time. I quickly applied lotion to them to help sooth the burning/itchiness away. The pain slowly went away after like half an hour. Is this normal? For a while, the pain was unbearable. It was mostly my lower legs that were burning.

I really think I should try sugaring my legs (I think I read a recipe here or something, and considering I can’t really afford waxing right now). What do you think?

You need to give your skin a chance to adapt to shaving.

If shaving irritates your skin, chances are that sugaring will be even worse. I have to point out that I have never tried sugaring, so maybe someone that has tried it can give you a better idea about that.

If irritation is that much of a problem, maybe you should try an M3 Power. You may find that it results in less irritation. And remember, don’t press down too hard. Let the razor do the work.

RJC2001

I do use a Mach3 razor. I don’t know if I should shave again. My legs felt like hell afterwards.

Hi Akram

I support RJC when he says you need time to adapt to shaving. It took me several weeks before the irritation began to fade, mainly on my upper legs. As you have said smooth legs feel amazing and are very comfortable. If you blade shave I would reccomend the soap that you tried at first and forget the shaving gels and preparations for now. The burning you experiance sounds distinctly allergic to me and is not normal. You can also consider an electric razor which I use very sucessfully and this can be used dry.

As for waxing all I can say is that it works for some. I tried home waxing twice with a kit called “Blue Steel Sports Wax”. I had a heck of a struggle to remove the residual wax from my legs after using it. It took me about 2 hours to do my legs. Results were impressive in the short term and my legs stayed smooth for about a week. Then the problems started. The hairs started pushing through the skin causing lots of bumps and welts that were painfull and an eyesore.

It took about 3 weeks before this process finished and I went back to shaving again. I reccomend you stick with the shaving to let your skin adapt - I shave every day with an electric and this helps. Stay away from shaving preparations and stick to soap to lubricate if you stay with a blade. Try to get a simple hypoallergenic cream from your pharmacist to apply after shaving. They are very cheap and do a great job in reducing irritation.

I don’t know if this has already been answered in this topic, but…What do women think about us males shaving our legs? I’ve been wondering about it for quite a while now.
