Legitimate electrolysis machines on eBay part 3

A bumper crop of Apilus machines on eBay right now, including some Platinums and Platinum Pures. More Platinums than I have ever seen at one time. The person selling all of them is new and has not feedback yet so factor that in if you are interested.

My question though, when did they release a “Platinum 2”?

I wonder if this is the manufacturer, Dectro, selling these units?? It is very rare to see a pre-owned Platinum or Pure for sale.

I doubt it’s Dectro. It says the item location is Tampa, FL.

So, Tampa, is the location for ALL these Apilus’s?

This appears to be a company called Cosmetic Devices that is having a clearance on some of its used equipment. Looks like they are having a sale until 8/31/11.

Thanks to Michael Bono’s book and the 15-20 hours I’ve spent reading through this fantastic forum, I think I’m sold on the Apilus machines, but since used ones are more difficult to locate, MaryC’s find was very helpful as I’m not about to buy pricy items off ebay from someone with 0 feedback.

I’m paranoid by nature, however, so before I plunked down a few grand I did some checking on the seller. GoDaddy shows cosmeticdevices.com is a relatively new website owned by “Beauty & Health Institute” in Tampa which turns out to be a “legit” accredited school (as of this year).

Sounds OK, right? Here’s the problem: the director of the Institute (who is registered as the owner of cosmeticdevices.com) was busted a few years ago for ordering prescriptions (for topicals) without a license and operating a laser school without a doctor (the staff doctor died a couple of months before and a new one was about to sign the papers). http://www.sptimes.com/2008/01/24/Hillsborough/Commission_candidate_.shtml
As a side note, she also manages (or used to manage) The Electrolysis Institute of Tampa which is recognized by the state of Florida.

The description of the alleged crimes in the article really didn’t seem bad enough to completely throw me off buying, so I was wondering if anyone here has any insight or thoughts.

My insight on these misdemeanors are that the state of Florida has one of the most draconian electrolysis and LASER regulations in the country. Does it help the consumer to have an ongoing business immediately shut down, all appointments canceled until further notice on the day a non-worker dies, while the staff searches for another person to take money from them to be the person signed on the papers saying he, or she will see anyone damaged by your work?
Topicals? Well, the law would have one either make the customers beg their doctors into writing prescriptions for the topicals (which would require paying an office visit, and then, many doctors still say no, because they are not performing or getting paid for the procedure) or have the doctor signed on your office paper write the script, but most of the time, that doctor has nothing to do with the office other than taking his fee after signing those papers.
Since they had the need for the doctor, they were also doing LASER on the site, so they have monthly payments on machines with costs ranging from $55,000 to $250,000 each, depending on what machines they are using. The Apilus machines they have listed in the liquidation sale would have cost them about $50,000 or more when purchased brand new. While they would own the electrolysis machines outright, they would most likely still be paying on the LASER machines, and thus this sale would be designed to keep themselves from defaulting on those payments, regardless of their intentions on the question of staying in business or not.

Between the litigation and the lost business due to bad publicity, I would imagine they need cash right about now.

Without any information on who this is, or what the real deal may be, that is my take on this from face value.

I received this e-mail on June 27th FYI:

Hello,
" My name is Marcellas Hill, I am Vice President of Cosmetic Devices LLC
How are you doing today ? I hope business is going well with you.
If you don’t mind me asking what brand of Electrolysis Machine do you use ? and do you have thoughts of upgrading ?
I ask because we specialize in selling Apilus Machines which is top line and If you are thinking of upgrading, at Cosmetic Devices
we can assist you without breaking your pocket. Our prices are very reasonable. If you would like a price list of our specials for the end of the month, just let me know and I will email you the list. I look forward to hearing from you.
I hope you are enjoying your summer. Have a blessed day."

If you were to purchase any of these epilators, I would talk to Jean-Louis at Dectro California first to see if they would look over the epilator that you choose to purchase to make sure it is top running condition. Ask Jean-Louis about the asking price. Ask him about the cost of doing this so you can factor that into your price.

Thank you all very much!

IHBH - Caveat emptor is right! Hence the cyber-sleuthing.

James - I’m glad you voiced your thoughts, because I was thinking along the same lines. I imagine that the separate liquidation website was created to not alarm current students that they need a cash infusion instead of just placing a “For Sale” page on the Institute’s web site (by the time stamp in the website’s source code, the Cosmetic Devices website was created 7/19/2011).

Ummm… I guess by posting this in a public forum I kind of screwed up their plan though… I can only wish them well.

Dee - great advice. I have written Dectro to see if they will do a once-over and how much it will cost. I hope it works out.

It’s not relevant to this thread, but my personal suspicion is that the arrest was politically motivated since the owner’s husband was running for a local office at the time and the minor crimes would have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Thanks again, everyone!

Dee, I received the same email.

Akira, I am sending you a PM, so check your messages!

Dear HairTell readers,

The unique list of authorized distributors/resellers is on our website www.dectro.com.

Dectro sells highly sophisticated equipment that may be operated by certified professionals only. By selling through e-Bay we are unable to control who are we selling to since anyone can make the purchase. Thus, the possibility of misuse is high and can lead to uncomfortable and inefficient treatments which tarnishes our brand and the whole electrologist profession.

Dectro allready made the necessary steps to get this equipment removed from E-Bay.

Thanks for your trust in Apilus !

If you have any question, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Seeing Apilus Platinum’s or Pure’s for re-sale is rare indeed. Using one by an unskilled, untrained person is scary. Thanks Dario for taking action on this.

This is almost about as good as ebay gets, a Silhouet-Tone 128, still in great shape with a buy it now of $700. Anybody going the DIY route that doesn’t have a machine yet should really consider this freshly listed unit.

And by the way, these ST machines with the cast-aluminum housings and blister-type buttons are built like tanks. This machine could be shipped across the globe and still be in great shape once it reaches your door. A point that I always think is overlooked: The Cast-aluminum series of Silhouet-Tones like the 128, 328, and Sequential Blends were some of the sturdiest, well-made electrolysis machines ever made.

item number 280718171938

Actually, the more advanced the machine, the easier it will be to DIY once one has a reasonable handle on what’s going on. It’s the old machines like an SS-69, earlier Hinkles, and the older Clareblends that can cause more damage if left to an individual that didn’t read up on operation and theory beforehand. The newer machines have presets that aid the user, as opposed to two pedals that require more skill and timing.

Here’s a bit of an odd one, and one I have never heard of before, an Instantron VP-500, stereo knobs with LCD display for the settings. A thermolysis only unit like the SS-69. I really doubt they will get the $650 opening bid though.

An original Apilus Senior for $2000
http://cgi.ebay.com/APILUS-SENIOR-ELECTROLYSIS-HAIR-REMOVAL-MACHINE-/170671143828

I wonder where some of these people get their ideas on what price to ask for these. One could get a lot more machine for $2,000 than a Senior One has to offer. I know someone who has an Apilus Senior One available for $1,200 delivered.

Forget the ST-128, here’s a Sequentium 328 for $700. YAY! I love the Sequentium 328. This is a great DIY machine that is built like a tank.

This machine is worth this much and they rarely go up for sale. I guess people keep them as back ups, …or just plain keep them in general.

The Sequentium 328 is the successor to the Sequential Servo-Blend, and the predecessor to the Sequentium VMC. Just a super-sturdy excellent machine. It does a lot of fancy sequential blend routines, but chances are, most users will dial in their favorite needed thermolysis settings and use it as a good, basic thermolysis unit.

I paid 1/4 the price they want for the Senior I for a SM-500 (the top model at the time the Senior I was released I think), so I don’t get it either

Yes, but even you know that the price you got that SM-500 for was an outright STEAL of a deal.

[color:#CC0000][font:Century Gothic]Here’s an Apilus SM-500 that just went up for bid. $750 hmmm. about right. Already has one bid. Hopefully a bidding war won’t push it above $900 or $1000.
