Laser in Bay Area

Hi,

I am 29 years old indian-asian women. My skin color maybe on the border of III/IV. I have successful electrolysis on my face and neck. As LA girl has mentioned that hair removal is addictive, now I am thinking get my underarms, bikini and legs get lasered. Can you suggest a good clinic in san jose/san fransisco area who specialize in my skin time and won’t burn me? How many treatments it will take for these areas to finish? Anys success stories from bay area.

Also what machine, settings should be appropriate for my skin color.

Thanks,

You will need to go in for consultations. There are tons of clinics in that area. Some that have been mentioned here include Aura Spa in SF and Zoozlaser in Palo Alto.

Your skin type is still fairly light, so you could safely be treated with an Alexandrite or Diode laser (e.g. GentleLase, Apogee, LightSheer)

Thanks LAgirl and emilily. I will definitely keep your advice in mind. I am moving to bay area in September, most probably I will be able to decide only after visiting them. LAgirl, I will follow your following advice on the other thread.

“For the clinic you’re considering, you should ask what specific brand and model of an alexandrite laser they’re using and what settings they’re planning to use on you (ask for joules, spots size, and pulse width at each place)”

The last link below also gives you an entire list of questions to ask.

Thanks LAgirl. I am also very tempted to ask them, “how does Laser work on female face?” If they give the wrong answer that means they are not honest and I should avoid them. What do you think how a honest laser practitioner will reply to this question?

I think it’s more about knowing what type of hair not to treat, regardless of the area. But also knowing that finer facial hair is more prone to induced growth is important.

hi everyone,

I had my first laser treatment on my lower legs today. I have indian ethnicity I shaved before going there. I have considerably coarse and black hair on my lower legs. Even close shaving does not give me a bald look on my legs. I hope that I can benefit from laser on my legs. I had couple of spots where hair some hair were left from shaving. Even after laser those hair are not gone. I was expecting that laser will burn all the hair which are showing and I will achieve a bald look until hair start growing again for shedding. So at this point my legs look exactly the same as they were before. Is it normal or you think settings were too low? She used yag 25 and 40 on me.

I am skeptical about having laser on my thighs as hair are not as coarse there. I got a 2x2 inches test patch on my one thigh to see if it works at all? How much time should I wait for test patch results before I decide to start that area? The consultant at facility said in two weeks you will know. That sounds like a lie because I understand that in two weeks hair will shed. But I can not tell about stimulation until they grow back.

Also, I am skeptical about the place. They insisted that they will charge me $1450 for 6 treatments on lower legs in the start. Isn’t it possible that I may need less treatments?

I want to start bikini as well she said she will charge me $1250 for 6 bikini treatments in start. Do I need that many or it is just a rip off?

I have one hair on my one toe and 2 hair on my left toe. I asked during the treatment if she could zap that? She asked the manager and she told it will be additional $340. I think this is too much for 3 hairs.

I negotiated with them that I dont want to pay for 6 treatments together. So she gave me the option of paying for 1 treatment now and to pay for rest of the 5 treatments in my second appointment. Should I go back to this place and pay rest of the money? I am not sure if I need that many treatments. It sounds like a rip off.

Not necessarily. You must always shave as CLOSE as possible.

“So at this point my legs look exactly the same as they were before. Is it normal or you think settings were too low? She used yag 25 and 40 on me”

It is normal. Wait for 3 weeks to see how shedding goes. You mean 25J and 40ms? or 25ms and 40J? And what’s the spot size? Joules and pulse width are meaningless without spot size.

You should only treat coarse hair. Yag works good only on very coarse hair. It can still give OK results on coarse hair but it will hardly give any results on fine or intermediate hair.

I don’t think laser induced hair growth is a problem on thighs.

You should ideally wait for 3 weeks to see shedding how goes. Even if you do experience considerable shedding on thighs in 3 weeks, I’d still suggest you wait for 6 months to see if there is any permanent reduction.

“Also, I am skeptical about the place. They insisted that they will charge me $1450 for 6 treatments on lower legs in the start. Isn’t it possible that I may need less treatments?”

Possible if they treat you at effective settings and overlap properly. You should experience 90%+ shedding after each treatment. 3 treatments is a bare minimum and most people with our skin type usually need 4-8 treatments on lower legs. 6 doesn’t sound a lot. It would be best if you could pay as you go.

“I want to start bikini as well she said she will charge me $1250 for 6 bikini treatments in start. Do I need that many or it is just a rip off?”

I don’t think that’s too many. Most people do need 6 treatments for that area.

If they are not willing to let you pay per treatment, look for another clinic.

Did you feel pain during the treatment?

The hair are shaved before treatment and while the Laser will burn off any part of the hair above the surface (that got missed in shaving), what is below the surface will remain. It is this part of the hair that is shed over the next few weeks. And it is AFTER shedding that you should have smooth skin for a few weeks.
My advice is do not shave for the next 3-4 weeks so it is more obvious if you are experiencing shedding or not. Same goes for the thigh patch.

$1250 is a lot for 6 bikini treatments. In London, UK, the normal price for bikini line is about £100 per session and less than £600 if you are booking 6 in advance.

Personally, if this area is being treated well, I think 6 treatments is too many. I was finished in 3 (just a few random hairs left which are better cleared with electrolysis). My sister, cousins and friends were all done in 3-4 as well.

My clinic also did my toes for free with my full leg treatment. But if you can’t do this, find an electrolysis. 1 min of electrolysis will get rid of these hairs.

Thanks for your input girls

@mumbaigirl. Thanks for your input. Let’s see how much hair I shed in next 2 weeks. wow i had no idea spot size is so important. I will ask them next time.

This place sounds all about money. I can’t believe that they won’t touch the single hair on my toe and would demand additional $340 for that. With their money centric attitude, I won’t be surprised if they treat me on lower settings so that I keep coming back even if I pay as I go.

@stoppit&tidy
I felt a couple of really mild snaps on my mid-calf area but almost nothing on any other area. I will try to do a better shave next time. No, none of the above surface hair were burnt. They are still there.

I think what has happened is that when they found that I am able to pay for my leg treatment then they thought they can probably make more money out of me. They have not posted their prices anywhere. They were unable to give me any price range on phone. They said they will only tell in consultation. Consultant did’t not see my legs before telling me the price. So, I don’t know why they were unable to give that price on phone. I think they just adjust price according to customer and ask them as much as customer can pay. As I did not negotiate on the price they figured they can ask me even more for bikini.

I am embarrassed to tell that they already charged me $215 for bikini, although I didn’t have the treatment yet. I came out of my leg treatment and I was scheduling my bikini appointment when other girl asked how I would like to pay $215. I absent mindedly gave her my card. Then I realized that i have already paid for legs treatment. She told me it was for my future bikini treatment. Now I feel stuck. This place is just all about money money. I just don’t get right vibes from here.

I really really wish this place could work for me as it is just 1 minute drive from my place.

My electrolysis on cheeks and neck is in finishing process. I can surely squeeze in 1/2 toe hair to be done in my electrolysis sessions.

Hi 127,

Having had YAG treatments that worked well, I can assure you that proper treatment hurts to the point that you are gritting your teeth and will want to swear out loud at points (such as near the ankle).

See if you can get your money back for the treatment you have not had and look for a better clinic with clear pricing.

A good clinic will always let you pay per treatment and some only have this price structure as they know their clients can be finished in less than 6 treatments.

Any new you place you try, you MUST have a prior test patch during the consultation and see how it sheds before booking an actual treatment. The test patch should also hurt, although because it’s a small area, it won’t hurt as much as a full treatment.

Laser treatments are every 8 weeks minimum on these areas so it shouldn’t matter if you have to travel a bit to find a good place.

Spot size is very important. Your best bet would be to get treated with GentleYag.(12mm spot size or higher)

Thanks stoppit. Now I have some idea what to expect at new laser place. I am not going back, turns out they charged me twice for leg treatment by ‘mistake’. I called them and told them that I am disappointed in their charge credit card all the time attitude. They promised me a refund. I have found another clinic but will be getting consolation in a month. By that time I will know if hair treated on my lower legs shed or not. May be with such a little pain they may never shed?

@mumbaigirl I will make sure to know spot size at my next place. do you know on which settings you girls were treated on lower legs?

I’ve not had any treatments on my lower legs yet.

You can find stoppit&tidyup’s settings here

Her skin type is IV.

Thanks that is really helpful. It seems like 25 J is pretty low. I will see if hair shed or not by next month. If they don’t should I get another treatment in 4 weeks? Or should I still wait 12-16 weeks.

25J is only low if the spot size is 12mm or more.

If they don’t shed i.e. are growing normally, then you have have the app whenever you want.

thanks stoppit. that was helpful. i will be back in a month with update.

I think 25J is low if the spot size is 12mm or LESS.

Sorry, that’s what I meant!
