YAG Spot Sizes and Settings Question

7 weeks ago, I had LHR to the male beard area (full face) - the laser used was a YAG and I gather that the spot size was 15mm and the setting was at 30j. I had quite bad swelling to my face and quite a nasty blister/burn which has now gone. I since had rescheduling problems with the clinic and subsequently have found another clinic. I went in yesterday to have a consultation and test patch (it turns out on exactly the same type and make of laser machine). The clinician remarked that the setting used by the original clinic seemed a little low (I received a burn and swelling) and that they normally use settings of 32, 35 and 38 on this area and that they are able to do up to 45 if needed. She patch tested me on 32, 35 and 38 and I don’t seem to have burned. Oh, yesterday she used an ice pack before lasering which the first clinic didn’t.

So, my question. Could these higher settings be used because of a different spot size? Or could it be that they used the icepack? The thing is that both clinics had exactly the same machine so I am a little confused as to why much higher settings can be used.

Oh, I spoke about the experience of the first clinic and the burn in page 2 of this post (I was replying to somebody else here) http://www.hairtell.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/98932/Scarred_on_face_from_LHR_Alex_.html#Post98932

Wow, not one reply. Doesn’t anybody know an answer?

We are electrologist heavy here. Unless, some kind soul, who is a laser specialist, volunteers their time to answer some questions, your post may go unanswered. Sometimes, Romeo (Chris) checks in, but he is very busy and has limited time. Sorry. Don’t take it personally. We do our best to not ignore posters. All who participate here, do so on a voluntary basis.

There are many possible reasons

  1. Different spot size.
  2. Lesser hair density->less collateral heating
  3. Go through sslhr’s posts
