With PCOS my electrolysis journey begins

Hi Everyone,

I have PCOS and hirsutism. I have always had facial hair but it was never as bad as it is now. It got worse around the age of 19 when I suddenly gained a lot of weight (20 kgs) in a short period of time. I have tried waxing on the face which is not a good idea. So I stopped and then I started doing laser. The only thing that did was make the matter worse. So I decided to try for electrolysis.

After googling online, I found a person who seemed legitimate with the information on her website (e.g. she stated that clients should never feel the hair being pulled, etc). So I decided to give her a try. I did a 1 hour session with her on the first meeting because I thought there was no harm in trying because it would give me an idea of what I have to expect from her. The session was okay painful… and I did end up with scabs. My only problem is that I am worried that she might be too slow. She said that my hairs were at a good stage and so I should start seeing results faster. But she worked on such a small space that I am wondering if it will be worth going to her. I am thinking that I will continue to go for a bit until I see the other lady in February 2015. By the way, the person whom I went to charged $75 per hour in downtown Toronto.

My question for all the knowledgeable people on this forum is, do you think electrolysis for someone with PCOS is worth the money? I am on an extremely tight budget and have told myself that if it works then I will continue to do as much as I can … so even if I can afford only 5 hours, I would rather spend the money on those 5 hours of treatment than spend it on any other hair removal option. Is it a dumb approach? Another question is that I was wondering if an expert can tell me whether my electologist is too slow because even though an effective electrologist is more important, I don’t want to go to someone who is not efficient enough.

I don’t have any before photographs but she worked only on a portion of the right side of my chin/cheek which is pretty much the same as the left side (which you can see in the photographs). Please let me know… any advice or comment will be helpful.

Thanks!

So here are the photographs. Please let me know if you think that is a normal area for a 1 hour session. Thanks!

Welcome to HairTell and thank you for the pictures.

Electrolysis, hands down, is definitely worth the money for someone like you with PCOS. It works brilliantly well. Our life’s work revolves around being passionately involved with clients like you to bring an end to your suffering. We already know the outcome before we remove that first hair.

Being on a tight budget is not helpful thinking regarding your situation. If you want permanent results, you have to do more than five hours for your problem. I think you already understand that. You have to invest in as many hours as necessary, spread out over about 18 months. Those are the facts and the facts cannot be bargained with just because you have finite funds. That is something that you need to reflect on before you commit to a plan.

I wouldn’t even invest in five hours if you think you will just stop. You will NOT notice a difference with just five hours of treatment, so don’t spend the money.

We always advise Hairtell consumers to get as many consults as possible. Check out speed, healing, sensation issues. Compare and think about what you think is best for you. I personally think speed is important. Yes, it is possible to speedily remove hair and be very thorough in permanently disabling hair follicles. That would be at the top of my list if I were looking for someone.

Your photo’s show scabbing. Don’t pick a scab EVER! Let it fall off naturally. It takes about two weeks for scabs the size of yours to slough off. Personally, I try very hard not to create scabs the size of yours for facial work. There are ways to avoid this or at least minimizing the number of scabs seen. Whoever you settle on, give them feedback about your healing and they will most likely re-think their energy levels or other things. I have found that using refrigerated aloe vera gel immediately after a session and then, liberally three days afterwards, reduces scabbing pretty well.

I wish you luck in your quest to rid yourself of that dastardly hair.

I’ve been going since late April 2014

1 hour weekly. I’ve missed maybe 6-7 weeks, but I’ve been pretty regular.

I also have PCOS and my under chin hair was thick and dense

We’ve reduced down to half hour sessions now

My skin is a bit hyper pigmented, but I see it getting (slightly) better

Don’t give up!

I forgot to add a pic

Dee has it spot on. 100%

Just wanted to add how amazing and confident you are going to feel when you have no more unwanted hair. That feeling is priceless. Its a investment, but the pay off is permanency .

Good luck !

Hi,

I need some advice from you. I am finding it difficult to find a good electrologist in the Toronto area. I’ve heard good things about Sarah Shingley but she is not working anymore (long story).

Anyway so the lady that I am going to is not that bad…I think. It’s hard to say anything at this point, I took your advice and told her about the scabbing and she has reduced the “time” or something and I’ve seen that it is a bit better this week. My only concern is I think she is slow. She says that she wants to ensure that she gets the follicle well so she will try to insert the needle twice t the same place which is quite painful and well I think time consuming. Her speed is 1 hair every 10 seconds so about 360 hair in an hour and she uses thermolysis. Is this too slow? Only good thing abt going to her is that I don’t feel the pull like I did at another place. On her website she emphasizes on that and she also talks about the importance of skill vs the machine or speed, which I understand but how slow is too slow? She charges $75/hour and is one hour away from where I live so I’m trying to figure out. If it is worth it considering that I have a super tight budget. I’m actually saving from lunch/grocery money however much I can to pay. Things you gotta do!

I have done 6hours so far and I shaved recently so I cannot post a picture. I’m going to grow the hair out this week and then update with photos.
