Due to work-relocation, I was forced to stop my LHR in Singapore and resume it in Dubai.
I was being treated with Diode Laser and after 5 sessions.I am still far from being hairless but very happy with the progress so far.
The new place here in Dubai is using a different laser called Cutera Xeo (Nd:Yag) laser… the doc told me that this one was better for type IV skins (my case).
The points are:
The whole session was almost “pain-free” excluding the under-arms part. I puzzle with this fact as during my previous sessions in Singapore using Diode I barely managed to bear the pain. I’m thinking this Dr. managed to use settings way to low (35j if I am not mistaken)
The Dr. passed by all over my skin (full legs and arms) continuously like while shaving. I am not an expert but I do believe that the bip, bip, bip of the machine serves to a purpose which is indicating the laser in working during those small intervals… I’m afraid the Dr only targeted the areas when the laser was bipping.
Alexandrite and diode lasers are more painful for a type IV because even though the skin may not be getting burned, the skin’s pigment is absorbing some of the energy (and pain), not just the hair’s pigment.
hi, i had the same question a few posts back. i had a test patch with the apogee nd:yag at 30mm, 30J and it didn’t really hurt.
lagirl advised that this was low for the yag and the lack of pain was indicative of this.
when i went for my first treatment yesterday (underarms)i questioned the woman doing it and she said that although it was low, she had chosen the settings based on my skin colouring and hair and that she would probably use more aggressive settings on later treatments. when she actually started the treatment, it did get painful after about 1/3 of the underarm was done. she also did a test patch of 25mm at 30J at the end and yeaaa… ouch.
sooo… i’m also confused about what is best/what i should be aiming for. i’m just trusting the aethestician knows what she’s doing…
The yag is not the perferred choice for hair removal. The wave length is not long enough to effectively remove hair. You should be looking for a di0de laser or Alexandrite. there are different lasers for various issues. Just because something is called a laser does not mean it is for hair removal.

There is no 30mm spot size. Can you find out the right one? I’m guessing it was 10mm.
30J on 10mm even with 25ms pulse is relatively low on a Yag. If you run a search here, you’ll find that most type IV people get treated at around 40-50J on the Yag with similar pulse and spot size. And yes, higher settings hurt more. Coarse hair hurts more too.
I don’t know wha the last person is talking about. Yag is an effective laser even though it has a longer wavelength. It has that to protect darker skin, which makes it less effective on finer hair, but it’s still very effective on coarse hair.
It happens often because it’s safer, i.e. clinics are afraid to burn their patients and to cause them too much pain due to fear that they won’t want to come back (and pay for more treatments). That’s why it’s important to find someone who is knowledgeable, experienced, and confident in their skills.
