A very strange thing has happened to me. As a man I have hair on my forearms. About a month and a half ago part of that hair on my left forearm just disappeared, strangely enough with a straight line from the wrist to the elbow (bad description, but it is very hard to describe). I first noticed it when I was showering. A few days I saw little hairs growing back (the hair was totally gone, but the skin was not damaged) and I was sure that it was going to grow back. A month and a half later however, the hair is still as it was: very, very small hairs that are not growing back.
Anyway: does anyone have an idea what might be the cause of this sudden shedding of hair and the fact that it is not growing back? I have thought of many different explanations (position I work in all day, etcetera), but no one is even half satisfactory. I’m not bothered by it, though it looks a bit strange. Actually, it looks like I shaved a small part of my left forearm. The same place on the right forearm is the same as it ever was. Maybe this is not a mystery at all, but it would be nice if someone could enlighten me in that case.
I know it sounds strange, but it’s entirely true. I didn’t know where to post it, so I posted it here.
at a certain age, men start losing hair on certain parts of the body. Legs are a very common area. It could also be that the hairs you’re talking about fell out since they were in the last phase of growth, and new ones will come in soon.
Hmm maybe, but what startles me is that it is one specific place, following a certain line. If you see it, you’d think I shaved it. I’ll try to post a picture tomorrow instead of using these inapt descriptions.
But coming back to your post: I suppose that when you lose hair from a certain age on, it doesn’t happen in just one specific place in a radical way, but more gently (thinning out). At first I thought it was going to grow back, but after a month and a half I’m doubtful about it. It’s exactly the same as it was in december. Must be the dawn of a totally new way of hair removal, me thinks. If only I knew how it works.
When I was younger I had to wear woolen pants, and the wool in those pants created a pattern much like that, where the larger coarse hairs were pulled out by the wool which left the smaller hairs.
Is there anything you are wearing? Sports gear, hobby gear, something of that nature that is worn in that area?
No, nothing particular that I know of. But how would it be that just that one part is affected and no other part on my arms? The hair’s only gone on the top of my left arm.
As I said: I’m not at all alarmed, I’m just very curious about it. Specially because it doesn’t grow back or, in case it is growing back, extremely slow.
As mentioned above, it looks mechanical from friction. Could be from how you sit or sleep, or if you are wearing a watch, wristband, or winter jackets, etc.
There are some mysteries that you have to wait and observe over time to see if there are any common denominators. Just mark on the calendar when you first noticed this and watch the area. Also, take special note of anything you might be doing on the job where this area is rubbed.
People can lose arm and leg hair if they have thyroid conditions, however, your hair loss is not a systemic occurence. I’m assuming that this is a local area that is affected and your beard and other areas are normal hair density for you?
One thing I will ask is, have you had any rashes or other irritations in this area recently?
