Which laser shall I use: Type IV - V Skin

Hello All,

I am committed to reducing the amount of body hair I have. I am a male, with a full chest and abdomen of thick coarse black hair. Also have thick coarse black hair over my upper arms shoulders and upper back, and the middle back is fine hair and no hair on lower back. I would like to reduce not remove my chest and abdomen hair, but permanently remove any hair on upper arms shoulders and back.

Any advice would be good, as to which laser to use, and recommendations on a clinic in calgary.

TIA

I would look for someone who has a GentleYAG or any other YAG laser. Most guys don’t have enough coarse hair on the upper arms for laser to be that effective and a number of people have reported induced growth on the upper back/shoulders so be wary of that. Laser will not get rid of all the hair but it can definitely reduce it quite a bit. If your heart is set on removing every hair, you will have to look into electrolysis afterwards.

not every hair, but i’d like a thinning.

Yes my upper arm hair is very coarse

  • Please read our FAQs at the link below

  • Chest and abdomen are easy to treat. If you only want a reduction, I’d go with a Yag type of laser. It will get the most coarse hair in about 4 treatments. You need someone who’s experienced and overlaps well to avoid missed spots and potential patchy results

  • Can you post a photo of your upper arms? That area is difficult to treat. Most men don’t have hair that’s coarse enough for laser on that area. And this area is prone to induced growth. We can help you assess whether you should try laser to start and finish with electrolysis or go straight for electrolysis.

  • Any fine hair should be treated with electrolysis from the start, not laser.

hey LAgirl,

thanks for the advice, what do you think of IPL, it seems to be the best dollar value.
Sorry I can’t post pics because I always shave them, but the hair is just as thick as my chest hair, which is freakin’ coarse.
The price for yag treatment is double that of IPL here in calgary.

IPLs are not good for darker skin and they’re not as effective as true lasers. This is explained in our FAQs at the link below. Please read them when you get a second.

“Thick” is not the same as “coarse”. It can be dense, but not coarse enough. Hard to weigh in withuot photos.

Prices don’t normally depend on the type of machine. They depend on what the clinic chooses to charge and their overhead costs etc. I would look around to find more clinic options.
