which laser is for me and what future developments

Hello,

I have been reading this forum for a while and just have a few questions.

Im not sure if this is the correct place to post this and I apologize for any inconvenience caused.

I am a 22 year old caucasian male with very dark brown coarse hair. I have light skin. I burn quite easily and only get a tan after i burn.

I am not sure as to which laser is the best but I think it may be a yag type laser?

The hair is quite thick and is humiliatingly everywhere. I would like to get my back, shoulders, upper arms and neck area done. I would not say the hair is “soft”. It is quite rough.

Also, are there any new developments in terms of hair removal that are coming out in the next few years for permanent hair removal?

Thank you for your time.

i also never hold a tan very long and the tan i do get is minimal. I usually just go bright red quite easily.

I have been on accutaine and stopped treatment in December of 2010.

I will only start treatment next year January to give a year gap between the accutain and laser treatments.

  • You need to wait about 6 months after stopping Accutane, so you should be ok within weeks

  • Please read the FAQs at the link below. There is a Fitzpatrick skin chart. Tell us what type you think you are. It sounds like a II to III, which means you need an alex laser, not a Yag.

  • Can you post photos? I doubt all those areas have the exact same type of hair.

  • You should only treat patches with coarse growth and at high settings. I would also only start with one area and see how things go before investing a lot of money. Plus, many of those araes are hard to treat.

  • LHR is permanent when done correctly on the right type of hair.

  1. The future of laser hair removal may involve the use of some exogenous, selectively-binding chromophore with a peak absorption in the IR range. This would allow hairs of all colors and thicknesses to be treated with an Nd:YAG laser. Currently, LHR is both dependent on and limited by melanin in the skin and hair follicles.

Even if such a chromophore was discovered today, it would take years of safety studies and clinical trials before laser clinics would be using it. Besides, if you’re an ideal candidate, today’s technology will still do you plenty good ;).

  1. It should be OK to commence laser 6 months after stopping the Accutane. Be sure to get a test spot done before jumping into treatment. We always recommend that anyway for every newbie, but it’s extra important in your case.

  2. Post a picture(s) of the areas you want to treat so we can best help you further.

Thank you all for your comments. Really helps a lot.

I would love to post pics but I am still very embarrassed and ashamed of it.

I wear double shirts all year round so no one can see it. Never swim or take my shirt off in front of anyone. I would die if anyone found out.

I am in South Africa and can’t find any clinics with the candela gentlease. But, I will ask my dermie if he knows of one.

I am between a type 2 and type 3.

The hair is quite corse and all over my back and shoulders. It might sound gross but if you imagine a guy with hairy legs, after he shaved them and let the hair grow back, that’s the kind. Not super long. Leg hair length. Brown and course.

Even if you could take a closeup of the hair it would be helpful.

Length doesn’t matter. It just needs to be coarse and dark.

Where in SA are you located?

The more coarse and dark, the better the results. It doesn’t have to be GentleLASE. Any good alex at good settings would be good.

Where in South Africa? How are you looking? I’m positive there are clinics around with good lasers, at least in big cities. A simple Google search comes up with the following you can call and ask for specific machine details:

http://www.serenity-salon.co.uk/product/laser.htm

You can also contact Stern laser who distributes Candela machines and ask for providers near you: http://www.reeva.com/pebble.asp?relid=13151&

Is the apogee laser good?

Yes. Though any laser is only as good as its operator.

Where are you located?

Here is the pic of my back hair. Its like this all over. Its gross. Sorry:(

Am i a good candidate?

Yup. Only treat areas that have that kind of hair.

If you post your location, we can help you find clinics in your area.

im in Pretoria:)

Here’s one:

This place is in Johanesburg. Also, not far.

Schedule consultations at 3-4 clinics, get test spots, and report settings they want to use here. We’ll help you decide who’s aggressive enough to get you results. Ask for joules, spot size, and pulse width being used in addition to exact name of the machine.
