Is there any you can get over the counter?
Besides LMX because that’s so expensive.
5 g tube, $14

Haven’t seen over the counter versions of anything that works as good as EMLA or LMX. Everybody has their stories about what worked best for them, but in short, most clients get better relief from EMLA if it is applied correctly and left on for the proper amount of time. It doesn’t seem to metabolize as fast as LMX from what I’ve seen and heard.

Dee

I’ve been using this for awhile now, I love it.

30 grams for just $21.95. I always order two tubes of 30.

Canada Drug Superstore, Duocaine

Here is something that I use with my clients.

It takes the edge off, I can use it liberally as it is only 2% lidocaine and the cool feelings feels wonderful while electrolysis is taking place. The price is extremely affordable as well. Also it does not take long to begin to take affect, Whereas the gels take 30-60 minutes.
Bactine has a similar product that is 2.5% lidocaine but almost twice as expensive.
As I said, my clients really love the stuff. Also it is not sticky which helps from my end as well.

The best thing you could do for yourself in regard to pain management is to read this from hairfacts:

http://www.hairfacts.com/tips/pain/painmain.html

The products that can reach the bottom of the follicle where the bundle of nerves entwine each hair follicle are the most helpful. But again, reports of relief are very subjective.

Hi Mantaray:

I am going to give Duocaine a try. I previously used Emla, but it is very expensive.

What method of application do you use?
Do you cover it with plastic wrap?

Alicia

Hi Alicia, I’ve used the Duocaine for quite a few sessions now, and have experimented. I now understand a few things. First, I know it acts quick, it acts within about 15 to 20 minutes. It acts a little stronger when kept from drying out, so I cover it with plastic cling wrap as soon as it’s applied. The carrier medium of the actual drug needs to be kept moist or it will thicken as it dries out. As it gets dried out, it forms like a thin film of off-white mud. When it does this, it’s basically useless because none can get into the skin anymore.

So when visiting the electrologist, I get a pen and map the area where it goes on so the electrologist knows. I put it on, not caked, but not too sparingly, cover it, and leave the house. I don’t take the wrap off until the electrologist is ready to go. it starts to fade at about the hour and ten minute mark. At one and a half hours it’s effect is gone.

Special tip! Here’s what I learned. I can put it on thirty minutes before and wrap it. Then, right at treatment begin, wash it off with witch hazel or alcohol, allow the skin to air dry a bit, and put another fresh application on, don’t cover, and allow the work to begin, it works much stronger. It takes a bit longer and your electrologist has to allow you some time to tend to it, but it numbs way, way better. I do this when I work at home.

I used to use the Tridocaine they sell, but to me it doesn’t work any better, it just adds a little numbing quicker. After they’re on for twenty minutes, the Tridocaine and the Duocaine work virtually the same. For the price I’d rather use more Duocaine, than less Tridocaine. Canada Drug Superstore is really great. They were recommended to me as well.

Mantaray

Hi Mantaray:

Thanks for the feedback on how to use the Duocaine. I will use it with the plastic wrap to increase effectiveness and leave it
on till she is ready to treat the area. It will probably be about 10 days before I get my order and can try it out.

I was using Emla but it is very expensive compared to the Duocaine. Right now I am getting some work done on the breast bone area of the chest and it is a very painful area to treat. I don’t need any numbing cream on my face and neck anymore since she is only doing cleanup in tht area.
