I read on the internet that 7-9% of people do not react to electrolysis at all. Can anyone tell me if this is true and if so who or what hair type is most likely not to react to electrolysis at all?
Can you cite where you saw this?
There is no hair that electrolysis will not work on. Electrolysis works on ALL hair structures. The only way electrolysis could not “kill” a hair is if the probe was too short to reach the the bottom 2/3rd’s of the follicle. I am assuming that is a rarity.
I fall on the side of 100% of permanent total removal if electrolysis (galvanic, blend, thermolysis) is performed by a competent electrologist and a compliant client. I don’t agree with the 7-9% figure and without information as to by whom and how this conclusion was reached, I don’t trust the information.

This isn’t true. All hair reacts. If you have a hormonal condition, you will develop more hair later in life, but electrolysis kills all hair that’s present currently if it’s done right.
I’ve read this “fact” somewhere…and wondered where the “fact” came from.
Here are some circumstances where a hair follicle doesn’t react to electrolysis:
- The client continues to tweeze. (oops, those follicles didn’t get treated AND they get irritated by the continuous tweezing)
- The client does not follow the suggested schedule of treatments. (oops, those follicles didn’t get treated)
- The client only has 3 treatments for a big job. (oops, most of those follicles didn’t get treated)
- The electrologist does a poor job. (sorry, those follicles didn’t get properly treated - not the fault of the electrologist with good technical skills)
I honestly believe that those reasons are why some clients and physicians will state that it doesn’t work for everyone.
Solutions to this?
- Never tweeze.
- Follow the electrologists recommended treatment schedule.
- Educate the client as to the physiology of hair.
- Educate the inexperienced electrologist as to proper insertions and application of currents.
Add more as you see fit.
Great thankyou for clarifying that. I interpreted that as some types of hair do not react to electrolysis.
I was also wondering does dark coarse hair usually need a few treatments on the one follicle? And if so how many treatments maximum would one hair follicle need to be destroyed if it wasnt destroyed the first time?
Quite the opposite!
I interpreted it as ELECTROLYSIS WORKS 100% OF THE TIME IF CERTAIN CRITICAL BEHAVIORS ON THE PART OF THE CLIENT AND ELECTROLOGIST, ARE IN PLACE!
Coarse, dark hair can be treated JUST ONCE in order to obtain the desired goal of permanently affecting the hair follicle so it cannot grow hair ever again. If the hair is a nice moist hair (anagen) and the proper amount of energy and timing is being used, one treatment is enough! Some hairs may need two or even three passes for various reasons, but eventually, they too will meet their doom.
Where are you getting your information about electroysis?
Thanks your reply.
I have read on websites like this one:
http://www.electrolysishelp.com/
Which states that the treatment does not work on everybody.
Do you see the graphic at the top of their page? It is a hair removal laser. A laser on an electrolysis “help” site. Clue #1 that someone doesn’t understand electrolysis. Clue #2,they are selling hair removal products…tweezers, gadgets, lotions and potions.
“Electrolysis hair removal is a method of permanent hair removal so this should be a positive development for many people.” What? Someone was obviously paid per word to write this. The owner of the site is Hill Street Publishing. Not exactly an authority on hair removal.
“Laser hair removal costs about five hundred dollars per treatment, with an average person requiring at least three treatments and normally not more than four.” Again, what?
The Internet is saturated with sites that sell products under the guise of educational articles. Take it for what it is.
This site is real consumers, real professionals, real facts.
I agree with Barbara. The only clients I don’t get results on are those who don’t follow protocol.
I’ll go ahead and paste, even though Choice has said it…
There are many sites out there that have bogus information - this information is often put out by other hair removal method businesses.
As with most internet searches…caveat emptor…
