hey so if i take vicadin before i go to electrolosis, will it help? or is it a different kind of pain killer?
Whoa! There’s better medicine than Vicodin for pain. Vicodin is a narcotic, as in codeine, and acetametaphen, as in tylenol and is prescribed for moderate to severe pain. Are you truly having this kind of pain with electrolysis?
Vicodin can become habit-forming, as you know. You will become drowsy and if you are taking certain other drug classes, the effects could become stronger. If you drink alcohol, same thing. I assume you have to drive to your appointments? Not a good idea if you are dosed up on Vicodin.
What part of your back is being treated now? Can your electrologists work with you on the intensity and timing componets to make this tolerable? Have you tried taking some other over the counter medications? Discussing pain medication help with your physician is always advised because she/he knows your health history.
Please be careful, Tom, and talk to your electrologist as well.

I to desire something to be used for the pain. I haven’t yet had electrolysis, but I’m assuming it will hurt more than laser. I can BARELY stand it when I get treated with laser. It hurts really bad, excruciating. This coming from a guy who has had third degree burns, a nail thru his foot, and almost lost a finger. I wish I could just get put to sleep with anestesia, but I know that won’t happen. Is there ANYTHING we can take? I’m about ready to try to find some illegal drugs or painkillers just so I can stand the pain because I know electrolysis is going to hurt alot more and I’m going to have to sit there for hours.
Chuck, you really shouldn’t assume it’s going to hurt without trying it. If you think it’s going to hurt, it definitely will hurt. Plus, you should try both thermolysis and blend because there is an amazing (to me) variation in tolerance from one person to another. I personally think that oral painkillers are a bad idea for electrolysis, and if someone is unable to stand the pain then it’s time to adjust the current setting or get some emla.
i have talked to them about it and they always suggest that topical cream to numb it… elma? or something like that. and it sounds perfect but its so freaking expensive. and for working on my back its going to take almost the tube for each treatment. the pain isnt rediculus for me, i mean i can handle it, but i just wish there was something that would make it not hurt at all ya know. i have taken tylenol aleve and ibuprofen for the pain prior to the apps but they only do so much ya know. they are working their way down from the tops of my shoulders to the bottom of my back, and right now they are able to get half way down the back in one treatment, so thats exciting, but it still hurts, haha.
i guess im just stuck with dealing with the pain for now… any one know of a cheep seller of that elma cream or whatever its called?
Have you tried a Canadian website connection to price EMLA? www.GetCanadianDrugs.com is a starting point. Or, do some googling. Type in ‘EMLA Canada’
Just wondering what kind of epilator your practitioners have and more specifically, are they using microflash thermolysis with a repeat function feature. Also, do you know if they are using the biggest diameter probe they can use for your hair structure? There are so many things that can help with the pain factor. The men’s backs that I’m working on do fine without any medication. It is tolerable for them. Sometimes it gets ouchy and I encourage them to let me know so I can try different levels. Making intensity and timing adjustments is usually all that is needed. I’m not a big proponent of EMLA or oral medications for electrolysis because I know I can fiddle around with my epilator to make it work better for the clients tolerance level, that is if they come to me hydrated and rested.
Emla’s good but the Tridocaine is better from my experience, as long as it’s used right; 30 - 45 minutes before, on dry skin. This thread covers it:

Electrolysis can take years, I wouldn’t make a habit of ingesting things that can induce an addiction, or can cause permanent kidney damage (GFR shutdown), it does happen with people that take maximal doses for extended amounts of time.
I’d recommend using the least amount of medication possible, and the Tridocaine solved that for me.

Seriously, why don’t they just turn the setting down a bit? You shouldn’t be in such pain, especially not the back. You may need a bit of cream for the sides of the waist but you shouldn’t apply it to too large an area.

As someone who’s had both, i would also recommend you don’t assume it’s that painful. it’s mostly about the mental state anyways. generally, the pain is DIFFERENT and it’s per hair, but if I had to summarize it overall and compare, it’s probably less painful or sometimes not at all (microflash for example barely hurts for me at all). it also depends greatly on an area (upper lip vs stomach).
