using ice before laser?

I hope it’s okay if I re-post this question from the DIY laser board. I thought there may be more laser experts on this board who could help me.

I recently started using the Tria home laser device, and some areas with denser and darker hairs hurt too much on the higher levels. I tried using an ice pack first and it reduces the pain significantly. However, I am wondering if cooling the skin a lot might reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. Thanks!

It’s fine as almost all professional lasers have cooling on them. Just keep in mind though that the Tria won’t produce permanent results.

Hey edokid, I know that’s true but I’m wonder about ice applied directly for some time.

When I was having my arm treatments, after the third, since it was summer, I got extreme redness which was pretty sore. So after the fourth, I asked the tech if anything could be done and she said that after treatment she’d give me ice packs to put on my arms for 20mins. Worked great for calming my skin down but this was the one and only treatment where I noticed less shedding of the finer hairs (usually got almost complete shedding of all hairs). Treatment settings and coverage were good as usual.
For the fifth, I mentioned this and the tech said that she had also heard that applying ice immediately after treatment may effect results.

I’ve never heard this before. Some clinics ice beforehand on purpose.

Thanks. It sounds like it will be okay to go ahead and use the ice for those painful areas then.

I’m aware that the Tria won’t produce results comparable to a professional laser. I have read the mixed results on the Tria, but it sounds like it is a good enough solution for me at this point.

Well good luck, I sold mine after owning it for 2 days because the battery only lasts 15 minutes which is about enough juice to do one underarm. It hurts like crazy, and not a single hair shed so was useless. I have light skin dark coarse hair as well, was junk!

Can anyone explain simplistically how a laser actually works to remove hair? I am asking because I wondered if the heat from the laser has anything to do with the process. Therefor applying ice seems like it would interfere with that aspect…? Or is it more to do with the light emitted? Thanks.

edokid, so far mine seems to last about 30 minutes at the highest setting. At least I have the option to return it to the store if it proves to be useless.

It is explained in the FAQs at the link below.
