Upper lip problem

Various skin removal methods has left pitting on my upper lip. Because of this, I feel like I can’t talk to people or look people in the eye. I know it’s not their fault, but anytime I would talk to people for more than a minute, they would do the thing where they brush their own upper lip while looking at mine because they know that a female’s upper lip isn’t supposed to look like that. That is why I avoid talking to people or looking them in the eye. I just feel less than zero. It can’t be covered up with makeup.

Is there anything that can be done to make this pitting look better? I would be willing to go so far as to do a skin transplant. I would remove skin from anywhere else on my body and put it there. I don’t care what the rest of me looks like, but my face is what I use to communicate to the world.

Most sorry for your ordeal. Can you be specific on the various hair removal methods you have used? Is the hair gone?

Yes, of course there are many things that can be done to improve the area and make you feel better psychologically. You can only decide by going to a dermatologist so she or he can see your problem. Listen to advice suggestions and do your own thorough research as well.

So get going on this. It might be a very simple solution that will get you back to communicating with confidence.

I think that I got the pitting from laser hair removal and those home electrolysis machines.

I have African American skin, so I’m thinking that the laser may not been the best choice. But this was when I was in high school and desperate for the hair to be gone. And the place that I went to wasn’t going to turn away money.

Did you ever follow through from your 2003 posts and look into having a professional electrologist help you with the unwanted hair on your upper lip?? This really does not sound like it would be such a high hurdle to jump to get you permanent relief.

I did look into electrolysis. It would be a higher hurdle for the electrolysis to cause more damage to my upper lip.

The decision is yours, of course, but that’s why I included the word ‘professional’ in the post, janedoe. If you consult with a few skilled electrologists, they can help you decide if treatments can proceed or not. I assume you are healed, but there are scars from do-it-yourself actions and laser? A professional electrologist may be very helpful for you. You can consult with a dermatologist as well so the three of you can work together as a team to get rid of the hair and rough spots.

I would strongly recommend seeing a dermatologist. There are many treatments available currently that can help with restructuring the skin’s surface.

First address the issue that bothers you more - skin or hair.

If it is the hair, get to a board certified or state licensed electrologist. List your city and state and maybe you can get a recommendation.

If the condition of your skin bothers you more, google Dr. Obaji Blue Peel and you should find a list of dermatologists who have studied under him. They are trained in addressing the issues of highly reactive darker skin.

Trust is a big issue and I understand that it often feels safe to do nothing but you seem to be suffering too much. Perhaps being armored with some knowledge will make you a bit braver. Now go google!
