Upper Lip Laser Hair Removal Advice

Hello everyone!

I want to take the plunge and get laser hair removal done on my upper lip, but I thought I’d get as much advice as I could first!

  1. Does anyone have clinic recommendations for South of Seattle area? I’m seriously considering American Laser Removal Clinic in Tacoma…

  2. I have dark hair and lighter skin. (probably type III?) And have been waxing and tweezing since I was 13, and I’ve heard it just gets worse with age… :frowning: (I’m 18 now.)

  3. I’ve heard laser hair removal doesn’t work on thin facial hair, but I think mine is dark and thick enough to work. Has anyone with similar features had this done with success?

  4. Should I find out what type of laser they’d use? I have no idea, so I’m open to suggestions!

I’m hoping to go in for a consultation this weekend!
Thank you so much!

If that’s the only area you want to treat then you’re probably better to go for electrolysis. Would cost around the same but at least you’ll have guaranteed results and removal of all the hair. Laser is harder, it can induce growth on the upper lip and definitely won’t remove fine hair. When we talk about dark coarse hair we’re comparing it to pubic hair to give you an idea.

  • Can you post a photo? I assume you’re female. If so, most women’s upper lip hair is not coarse enough for laser. It needs to be very coarse, like bikini line hair. That type that leaves stubble and a shadow when shaved.

You should decide on laser type first and look for clinics that have that specific type. What does this clinic have? If it’s the national chain, they don’t have great machines.

I would opt for electrolysis. Not all hairs on the upper lip are of the structure and color that a light-based system can “see”. A skilled electrologist can zero in on all hairs, not matter the color or structure. What kind of laser does American Laser use now? Important to know this.

For the middle upper lip, you may want to get a 5 gram tube of L.M.X. (5% or 4%) to numb this area before you have treatment with either modality.

I vote for electrolysis. I can offer NO recommendations for electrologists in your area. Go see several, get consults and short sample treatments and trust your instincts.

Wow, thanks!!! That was really helpful!!! I was so close to going through with it but now I will seriously look into electrolysis.

I don’t know how laser would work for removing fine upper lip hair, but I do know that there is a good chance that IPL would work. I had some freckles removed from above my lip using the IPL Palomar EsteLux 2 years ago and the spots where they treated the freckles never grew any hair back. I have very fine, not very noticible dark brown hair on all of the rest of the area above my lip where the area was not treated, so I believe this method can work well on very fine hair.

I had four treatments on the freckles with IPL. Definatly no hair regrowth on those spots, so it is possible.

When was your last treatment? I assume relatively recently. If you wait at least 6 months, most of it will be back.

I had it done two years ago, and no hair has grown back on those spots since then. My hair to start with was dark, but very fine and not very noticible, so you can only tell when you look close up that there are patches above my lip with no hair.
