Looking over myself today I noticed something that I overlooked before, because I’ve been shaving for a long time. Most of my follicles on the lower part of my lower arms/wrists, and on my stomach, have two hairs growing out of them. How common is this, and does it pose any particular challenges for electrolysis (or even laser)? I am asking mostly out of curiosity since I hope to start some treatment later this year.
It’s actually really common in the underarms. I have clients that seem to have 5 or 6 hairs sometimes from what seem to be one follicle or ones very close to it. As for special considerations, not a whole lot, but often you loosen more than one hair in the process of treating a single follicle.

Thanks! That’s reassuring. Would you say it makes “even thinning” more difficult? I’m probably aiming for thinning and not a completely smooth look in these areas.
It is very common on body areas to see a cluster of 2-3 hairs growing close together. Just as Seana said, sometimes when we treat one hair, the energy spills over and destroys the neighboring hair, so we get two for one shot.
Very common, that’s good to hear. I hate risk factors and I assume that you think this is not one.
So I would also assume that it doesn’t complicate thinning an area either? Say like if you want to reduce by 50% it will still be somewhat predictable for an experienced electrologists even if you might kill two or more hairs in one shot when they grow like this?
Its really not a problem. Reduction isnt an exact science, and the “artistic” or esthetic side of what we do comes into play here.
I agree with Seana. The beauty of electrolysis is we are disabling hair follicle one at a time, so we can be selective in which hairs stay and which hairs go.
Another strategy is to remove everything just one time and then wait and see what the next group of hairs look like. If there is too much, then do another clearing and wait and see what you have left.
Thanks to both of you. That sorted out two of my concerns/areas of interest ahead of treatment. I really appreciate what you’re doing and the expertise here at HairTell. Getting good info and assurances straight from experienced practitioners is simply priceless.
I’ll go search the archives here for more info on clearances and reduction to educate myself further, and I might be back with more questions if I can’t find the info
