Thinking of trying electrolysis for facial hair...

Hi,
I’m a female and I was thinking of getting electrolysis done on my facial hairs, (the hairs on my upper lip and my sideburns/cheek). The hair I have is thin but it is dark and noticeable. I was just wondering if electrolysis would be a good treatment to consider and if it is permanent? Also, how many treatments of electrolysis does it take and how often (like how many weeks or months in between) would I have to get the area treated?

Also, I’m kinda scared about getting scars from electroylsis…do I have to worry about that if I find a good electrolgist?

Thank you.

Yes, electrolysis is perfect for what you described, and yes it is permanent.

You wont get scars. Maybe some pigmentation changes for a little while that can be better or worse depending on aftercare, but if you get a good electrologist who is using decent equipment, then scars are very very rare.

It will take as long as laser over all due to the length of hair cycles (anywhere from 9-18 months total from the experiences I’ve heard), and the treatments are usually weekly or every two weeks. First clearance or two can take anywhere from an hour to many hours (depending on how much hair you have), and then subsequent weekly/biweekly treatments will take less and less time. Eventually you will only need a couple of minutes of treatment at a time.

Thank you for the information. Also, I was wondering if the hairs after the treatment is complete are finer and lighter or are they permanently removed in most cases?

Hi Sunshine:

My electrologist does a lot of facial hair removal for women, and they make up the majority of her clients.

They only use settings high enough to adequately treat the hair and remove it, so there shouldn’t be any scarring if that is done properly.

Some hairs are killed the first time around, but not all. Also hair grows in cycles, so it might take a year to 18 months of regular appointments, followed by periodic touch up treatments
until all the hair, including the regrowths are permanently gone forever. In the meantime through regular treatments you will have removed the offensive hairs and will look and feel better.

  • It takes 9-18 months to finish your treatments if you go on schedule. You start out with treatments once every week or two, and they decrease to once every month or so after a few months.

  • You don’t need to worry about scarring with a good electrologist. So just find a good one. Do a bunch of free sample tests and consultations to pick someone good. Run a search for your city to find recommendations here. The most important thing is that you don’t feel the hair is plucked. It shoudl slide out without resistance. And you should be able to see how your skin reacts right after the first trial treatment. Also, don’t forget to use proper aftercare - witch hazel during the day and tea tree oil at night.

  • It’s important to go in often at the beginning to clear the area asap. Then just come in when new hair pops up so you can kill it while it’s new and weak.

  • Also, look for someone with a modern computerized epilator. Apilus machines are some of the best. And thermolysis type of electrolysis is fastest.

Thank you Aliciadarling and LAgirl for your answers, they really helped me gain some more information on the process of getting electrolysis.

Also to both of you, I was wondering if you both have done electrolysis on the face or just other areas? I would just like to see how your experience and results was if you had electrolysis done on the face. Thank you
