The "Silky"

We tried again and got a pretty good photo of a “silky.”

I’ve only seen three of these, ever. This one can grow to about 5 inches long. (My client is keeping his and likes it!)

All slikys are spider-web thin and always pure blond/white. Think feathery gossamer silk thread. They grow straight out and do not follow the pattern of the nearby hairs. All the ones I have seen grew in typically hairless areas.

I have seen one growing from the middle of a woman’s forehead (straight out) and one from the top of a man’s ear. Yep, “odd” is certainly an understatement and I have no explanation. Loch Ness monster? Space alien thing?

The silky is a great name for these, I have until now called them rogues. I have never known anyone to have more than one of these. Has anyone here ever seen anyone with more than one? I have seen numerous cases over the years but only on white skinned females. Is there any theory about them Michael?

You are right Christine … I have only seen just one on anyone. I have no clue at all about these odd hairs. Always in very odd places too.

Yes! I have had one on the side of my neck, on the side of my abdomen, and on the side of my upper arm. I don’t think I’ve ever had them at the same time but they are very cool.

Edit: And yes, I’m a white skinned female :stuck_out_tongue:

What I refer to as the 'mutant ’ hair, side of nose, under eye, centre of forehead are other areas where I’ve seen them such odd hairs of the now you see them now you don’t variety. The ‘silky’ is a much better name.

Haha, my husband has a few of these ‘pets’. His body hair is dark brown except for these which are blonde and very fine. Jossie removed one from his ear last year (it was pretty funny, he wasn’t prepared for the pain). He’s keeping the ones on his abdomen.

I feel cheated! You guys have seen a lot of silkys and I’ve only seen THREE! What’s up with that?

To me the weird thing about these hairs is they’re not like hairs at all; more like a spider’s web. The ones I’ve seen are insanely thin, and have no strength at all. They “blow around” with the slightest movement of air, they actually float in the air. You can barely see them (finer than the finest vellus hair).

My client, yesterday, said he measured it one time and it was just over six inches long (in an area with tiny almost-vellus-like hairs growing in a different direction altogether.

Big foot? Alien invaders? Maybe?

(My God, what a loony profession we are in?)

I had a client who said she that whenever she turned on the blower in her car, she could feel a tickle on her neck. When I was looking for a hair, I discovered this inch and half silky. I removed it and she was so surprised by the length.

I have one on my forehead, but it has never grown longer than an inch. Some clients have ask me to remove one on their nose or their forehead.

I seem to recall that the sebaceous gland feeds these hairs - they don’t have a blood supply.

I had one once in the pubic region. Surprised me.

Here you go, Michael, now you have seen 4! This one belongs to my partner nightfrost, his dad reportedly has severa, growing out of his eyebrow, but nightfrosts is on the side of his arm.

Enjoy! It’s remarkably difficult to get a good picture of these unless you have a dark background

Oh gosh … that’s a BEAUTY!

Glad you enjoyed.Of course I had to wait for him to come over to get a shot or two of it.

I am in awe of the photography on this thread, well done. These hairs can be so difficult to find at times, I never would have believed that capturing an image was even possible.

It wasnt easy I had to use the magnifier, high definition on the camera, and show off my dirty stained blue pillow just to get contrast .

Oh, I have one of these on the corner of my eyebrow. I always thought it was common lol

Grows dead center of my forehead (I am 50yo white male) - so hard to see that it reaches over an inch before I notice that it is back… My electro has treated it several times but it isn’t fully gone yet. I agree with y’all that it is thin, has no pigment, grows straight out, has no bulb. Perhaps that is what makes it harder to destroy?
