suckered in

I’m currently getting treatments done at American Laser Center and I was wondering if anyone has any feedback on getting IPL on the upper lip?

I’ve already gone in for one treatment (and almost due for my 2nd) on my forearms and abdomen and though I don’t see much change on the abdomen I immediately noticed reduced growth on my forearms even though I was advised that I wouldn’t see any results until my next treatment. It’s just small areas of no growth at all. They started me on setting 20 and I didn’t feel any pain except on the lower regions of my abdomen (which felt like someone tweezing hairs). For both areas I must’ve only been in their office for 20 minutes, it was very fast. I just wanted to put in my 2 cents and I’ll be sure to keep updating since I only see bad reviews for American Laser Center and I don’t want to end up the same.

I think I’m a skin type 4? Fair skin, dark brown hair, thinner on my forearms than my abdomen. My next treatment will inclue my upper lip area as well and just to add to the records my payments are about $290 for each treatment (so times 6 for all of them) for all 3 areas.

How long has it been since your last treatment?

I went in around dec. 14th and i’m due in again around the 25th of this month

Type IV is not fair skine. that would be type I-II. Please keep updating. It’s very hard to tell if this will work on you. Some people do have some results with Aurora, especially on very light skin, type I or II and dark hair. The darker the skin, the more difficult it will be. I’d be curious to see what your results will be. Do you experience shedding 3 weeks after the treatment?

I don’t know if I’d consider it shedding really since I have to shave the area before the treatment, it’s more like the hair doesn’t grow back in certain spots

Do American Laser Centers have IPL or lasers ? I have been thinking about getting an IPL treatment but their customer service does not seem to know a lot when I call them.

they have the Aurora IPL machine. I think some have a LightSheer diode. What treatment do you want to get with an IPL? hair removal?

I want to get hair removal on upper lip and chin. I had a test spot done with LightSheer diode and it really hurt me. I have a medium skintone with black hair. I recently got a test spot with StarLux IPL but it wasn’t hurtful. However, I heard that IPL is not very effective on darker skintones…any input would be appreciated !

If you want no pain, you probably shouldn’t be looking at permanent removal. If you’re trying to kill hair permanently, it’s just something you should be willing to put up with. It only lasts a few minutes. If you’re not feeling much pain, that’s a good sign that nothing’s happening and I’m pretty sure that’s not what you want to pay money for. It seems that I keep reading more and more posts about how people are looking for least painful instead of most effective treatment. How bad do you really want your hair gone for good?

Yes, LightSheer is a good laser and you would get much better results with it than most IPLs. How dark is your skin? How coarse is the hair? How much of it do you have? If it’s pretty dark, LightSheer might be too powerful at high enough settings and cause a burn. Do you know what setting was used on you? If your hair is on the finer side then laser might not be a good option at all.

I have a medium colored skin with dark hair…I am of an
Indian origin. I am not sure but I think the setting for
LightSheer was set to 13 or 15 and it was quite hurtful for me.
The test patch did clean up though after 2 weeks. I have a
very low pain tolerance which is why I am looking for a
less painful type of hair removal. I am not doing it just
because I am lazy and can’t wax etc…I have thick growth on
the chin. It’s really embarrasing for me to live with it
everyday which is why I am looking at these options. I had a
treatment done with Aesthera as well and while I didn’t feel
any pain it did not work for me. This is the reason I am doing research before deciding on any kind of treatment. Do
you know if Starlux IPl works on coarse dark hair
effectively ? I am fine even if I could get some results like less hair or finer hair so I don’t have to deal with it everyday.
Please advise.

Aesthera hasn’t show much results for people who’ve tried it on these forums at least. It’s pretty much just hype from what I see. For your skin type, you should be using a Yag laser if the hair is truly dark and coarse (i.e. if you shave, there is a bit of a shadow etc). IPLs don’t work well in general, but especially on darker skin like yours. Once again, with any machine, no pain means you’re not getting results. You won’t get less hair. You may even get MORE hair because laser can stimulate hair to become darker on a woman’s face, especially on darker skins. You CAN end up with a worse situation than you started with if you don’t do what’s considered best for your skin and hair type. Yags are a bit less painful, but that once again shouldn’t be a concern. You can use a numbing cream and/or ice packs which help a lot. 13 or 15 joules on LightSheer are useless and won’t produce permanent removal. You can also consider electrolysis. It’s actually preferred on the face, especially when the hair is not really coarse, however it requires a bigger time committment as well. Unfortunately, the only painless somewhat “easy” solution is shaving, and it’s not permanent. I’m sure you’re aware of waxing and threading too. Permanent removal requires committment and putting up with a bit of pain. Otherwise, you would just be spending time and money to end up in the same or worse position than where you started. I know that’s not what you want to hear, but the technology is not here yet to provide you with what you want. I’m just outlining the facts before you do something that your regret.
