Stubborn Neck Hair After Electrolysis — What’s Going On?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been doing electrolysis on my entire face for the past 2.5 years. I used to have very thick hairs on my jaw and neck, which started after laser hair removal caused paradoxical hair growth. My electrologist is wonderful and I trust him completely. All the thick hairs on my jaw and cheeks are gone, and most of the coarse black ones on my neck are gone as well.

However, for the past eight months, I’ve still had about 20 hairs on my neck that keep coming back. They aren’t very thick—my electrologist calls them “accelerated vellus”—but they’re dark, and I can see them, so I want them removed. Even though I’ve been going back every two weeks for the last eight months, they still keep returning. It’s frustrating because the much thicker hairs responded quickly to electrolysis and have stayed gone, but this little group keeps growing back and it’s driving me crazy.

My electrologist says it’s due to the previous laser hair removal, and that dormant follicles are still cycling in. But I feel like it’s the same hairs because they seem to follow the same growth pattern. I know he’s doing the treatment correctly based on the results I’ve had everywhere else—it’s just this one area that seems stubborn and unchanged. For example, I recently had some longer, darker hairs on my cheek removed with electrolysis, and nothing grew back for about a month and a half, and I can already tell there’s been a reduction.

So what’s going on with the hairs on my neck—specifically the area under the jaw and below the chin?

Wow your post reminds me of me! I have the same thing almost but on my jawline. I’m not sure what to make of it but despite overall having my electrolysis experience be super positive, this is making me despair the process a bit… I hope you find an answer, good luck to you.

Thanks for your comment! I know it’s very disheartening. I read your comments on another post, did you see a difference after switching your electrologist?

Did you only start treating these particular neck hairs 8 months ago or have you also been treating them for the past 2.5 years? It’s not possible that you’re seeing the same hairs every two weeks because hair growth cycles wouldn’t allow for that. Having said that, I would expect really strong progress after treating only a few hairs over the course of 8 months. If you’re still going every 2 weeks without seeing a reduction in those neck hairs, then it’s clear something is going wrong.

Thanks for your message!

I’ve been having my entire face done for the past 2.5 years. What can be going wrong do you think? Why is the hair growing in every two weeks if it’s not the same hairs?

I’ll have to let you know… it’s TBD. Other commenters have said ~6mo is a reasonable timeline to expect that there will be an (almost) permanent removal. I suspect my previous tech (who I adored!) had a low(er) kill rate than I thought. I’m going roughly every 2.5 - 3 weeks now to the new tech.
