Hello all,
I wanted to start a post where i can write about my experience with electrolysis. Please feel free to post comments. I had my 1st session with Debra Tamblyn, her office is at 25 E.washington (wabash intersection). I am getting my cheeks (beard line) done by her. She mentioned she has a latest equipment for electrolysis and has been in this industry for 15 years. I dont remember the name of the machine but she started with Thermolysis which apparently didnt work well on my face as she said the hair were too thin. She said she used âmixedâ variation, whatever thats suppose to mean. I felt 3 zaps of electricity during each insertion (sometimes 6) and she took about 6 seconds for each hair. The needles she used werent gold, but were the bulbous ones ( excuse me if i have the wrong concept).
Anyways, she gave me 25 min of sample electrolysis and the area didnt get red at all. She did show me the hair, most of which had bulb attached to it, so i guess thats good news.
Just a few questions now for the experts on this forumâŚ
The bulb seemed black in color whereas i thought they would be white, is that normal?
If one sees the bulb at the end of each hair strand, does that mean the hair has been killed for good?
I felt hair being plucked a couple of times but majority of times it didnt feel like plucking, so it that good?
Is it really true that Thermolysys can be done on only certain type of hairs ( thick or thin) ?
She mentioned that her machine was of 28 Mhz, is that considered a decent machine?
Thank you again for all your inputs in advance. Ill keep posting on this thread for updates. By the way, she is charging me $30/15 min and says i should be done within 3 months (half hour sessions every 2 weeks). Does that sound ok?
I will also be consulting another lady (Debbie) whose reference was given to me by a member on this forum (127) and see if she can get my shoulders done.
Thanks yâall
You wonât be finished in three months. Iâm sure she meant that you will be cleared in three months. Iâm sure that she knows about hair growth cycles and she knows that it takes a minimum of 9-12 months to get through those hair growth cycles. Get cleared asap and then keep regular appointments to stay clear, until there is nothing left to clear because electrolysis is PERMANENT HAIR REMOVAL. In the begininng, some hair structures have white dry bulbs and some have moist, pigmented or non-pigmented bulbs. The later bulbs are preferred. Not feeling traction when the hair is lifted out is good, but in the beginning, some resistant hairs may be felt because of the stage of growth they are in or because the bottom structure is huge. Is it gone for good? Maybe? Some hairs are and some hairs will appear as regrowth months later, but they will be weaker and finer.
Thermolysis is not only for thin hairs. Thatâs old school stuff. I do thermolysis (PicoFalsh) on the thickest structures you can imagine and it works just fine. Sometimes I use blend when I feel the need, but most times I use the faster forms of electrolysis, with gold or insulated probes (mostly insulated now) that match the diameter of the hair. The best computerized epilators allow the skilled electrologist to have so many options
for removing all kinds of hair structures that it is simply amazing! The doubters are many, but they have opinions based on no real hands on experience for longer than a year, but rather they cling to books written thirty years ago. I think she probably said thermolysis is for thin hairs? Might you have misunderstood her?
Gosh! My fee schedule is a bargain compared to what I hear on these boards. What a fool I am, but my instincts guide me well.
As many experts will tell you that feeling plucked is not a good sign. James and dfahey has mentioned many times that you should not feel anything when a hair is being lifted. What I have concluded from the advise of experts and my personal experience is that if hair is not in growing phase (white bulb?) then hair can tangle while coming out but that does not feel like plucking. Experts, Please correct me if I am wrong here.
I feel tangling sensation on hair which i never plucked in my life or we start a new area, so I assume that they are not in growing phase. But I donât feel tangling of the hair which are regularly being treated or i had plucked them for years. On the other hand, I feel intenser shock on those hair which are thicker, I am not sure why. I am still learning, so consider my opinion only if dfahey or James approve it.
Kiz, do us a favor and put your location in your profile. Otherwise, future posts wonât show that the person doing your work is in the (and I am guessing here, because you donât have enough information in either the post or your profile) Chicago area.(?)
Some hairs have larger root systems than the shafts they are being pulled out of, and in crowded areas, like the upper lip, one may feel them POP out from this shaft similarly to poping a pimple, and in other cases, the hair is in shedding phase, and a similar tug or pop may be felt. In no case should you feel the same thing you feel when you just pluck a hair out on your own.
Since she said she has a 28 mHz machine, we can guess that she can only be talking about either the Apilus Platinum, or the Apilus Platinum Pure. In either case, those are what we consider the gold standard of new electrolysis machines these days. We will let you know when the next thing comes along to topple the current king of the mountain. (just like we did the last few times Apilus and Silhouet-Tone played leap frog with each other.)
Thanks for the input guys This is the reason why i love this forum. 127, again thanks for your help.
Dfahey has always been kind to contribute to this forum with his valuable suggestions and expert advice.
I realise chicago is pretty expensive when it comes down to electrolysis, but guess i dont have much option. ANyways, will keep this post uptodate with my experience.
Thanks again.
Welllllll, Iâm actually a very cool female , khiz. Just go forward and check in whenever you feel the need. All we ask is that you give feedback to your electrologist about your concerns as well because she can see you. We all conduct our electrolysis practices differently, but there are certain principles that we all learn that are the same and should be adhered to.
May you have good progress and keep your thread updated. Okay?
awchâŚim so sorry dfahey. Didnt know ur a very cool girl, but now i know
By the way,and this is for Mr JamesâŚI called Cloda near ashland and wellington and found that cloda doesnt work there anymore. There was another lady who talked to me and did setup a time for me this comingthursday, so im gonna go there for my shoulders.
Hence, the plan now isâŚget my cheeks done with the lady in downtown chicago and my shoulders done with clodaâs place. Will keep all of this updated in this forum. I just hope i have enough money.
Thanks yâall.
I recently started electrolysis for a brazilian and have had some very different experiences from the two places I went. The first place I went to I had no pain afterward, but there was a lot of pulling/tweezing feeling going on. I went three times for three hours each. Now I go to a place which uses âblendâ and I am in a lot of pain afterward for the rest of the day using ice packs. Which is better? Thanks.
The second place is better. Too much traction and pulling on a hair means you are being under treated. Tell your practitioner that you have a lot of pain after a treatment and let her comment on that. If it is only for a day, you can tolerate that, right? Itâs for a good cause. See if she can change things up a bit. If that is of no help, then you will have to endure or you can check out other electrologists.
dfahey is right, second one is better but I am sure you deserve even better. I am pretty sure that there must be some electrologists in your area who can make this very comfortable for you. I had electrolysis from Arlene in Mountain view. She didnât cause me much pain, especially after treatment i was perfectly fine. I will give her 4 out of 5

If Arlene is far from you then you should try shop around until you find a good one. Good Luck
OkayâŚso ive had 1 treatment on my cheeks with a lady in downtown chicago and 1 treatment with Clodaâs place near chicago downtown.
I must admitâŚClodaâs place was a very good experience. The lady there was Posish and she spent an hour on my shoulders. She is a very sweet n talkative lady. I didnt even realize tht an hour passed by so quickly. And because of the talk, i barely noticed any pain. The most amazing thing wasâŚshe was blindingly fast, as compared to the lady i go for my cheeks. I mean, she cleared quite a bit of area on my shoulders but said most hairs will come back (I have another appointment with her this week). She did mention she is using Thermolysis on me which i guess is the fastest. Ill try getting some pics uploaded as well of my 1st experience. Also, the second âamazingâ lady is charging me $80/hr as compared to $30/15 min by the other lady.
By the way, thanks James for refering me to Clodaâs place. Although she doesnt work tthere anymore ( she went back to ireland), the lady working on me seems very good. I guess only results can confirm that :).
Just my luck!!! Ive moved back to virginia due to job relocation and miss Grace (The lady who works at Clodaâs place). I only had 2 sessions with her and she was the best. Once again James, thanks for the referance :).
NOW, i may be moving back to chicago in 2 months, but for the time being, im looking for someone to help me find an electrologist in Reston,VA area. Although there are tons of electrologists here, i would like someone to refer me to someone who she/he has had experience with. ANy help yould be very highly appreciated.
Thanks.
Two of these electrologists have some great visual wear hanging around their neck most likely on par with what dentists and surgeons use. One of them use a digital Gentronics epilator and Iâm not sure what the other epilator is, though it looks older. This doesnât mean you wonât get good care, but Iâm just making some observations.
If you want a full clearance asap, get those sample treatments and compare the speed part.
If you can travel about 50 miles to Frederick, Maryland to see Sally McAleer, Iâm thinking it would Be well worth your time. She has an Apilus Platinum epilator and knows how to use it! Otherwise, type in âelectrolologists in Reston, Virginiaâ in the google bar and make a list, go visit and then decide who to give your business to based on your best instincts and knowledge.
