Starting electrolysis because of this forum

Hi all

I am starting a course of electrolysis tomorrow thanks to reading many positive reviews on this forum.

I have very light, fine hair above my lip and I haven’t touched it in 15 years. Basically i’ve just lived with it. Now after some thorough research online and on this forum I have decided to take a major step into starting electrolysis.

I’ve always been scared to do anything with the hair in the past due to me being scared of it coming back twice as bad and twice as thick. But from reading other peoples stories on here this makes me feel more positive.

I’m booked in for 45 minutes tomorrow so fingers crossed.

Stacey

Good luck, Stacey.

Come share your progress with us.

Be careful… The upper lip area is a sensitive place. Just because you think you’ve chosen a great electrologist , doesn’t mean you’re right. Over treatment happens without you understanding what’s going on. Make sure they are short and spaced out treatments.

I hope the 45 minutes is a consultation and then a short sample treatment.

I agree with margo159, starting with short treatments with time between so your skin has a chance to recover is the best course of action. You should not have a full 45 minute treatment on the upper lip even if you have had electrolysis before.

In my practice the maximum time I would spend on the upper lip is 15 minutes. Occasionally I have a client who can take 20 minutes.

Good luck.

I have booked a 45 minute appointment purely to talk to the electrologist beforehand.

I’ll let you know how it goes

Just a note to share about the time one can work on an upper lip.

I routinely work for more than 15 minutes on an upper lip for the beginning sessions, especially. This creates a stunning visual effect where it looks like the person never grew hair on their lip and they walk out very excited. Forty- five minutes to an hour is common. The trick is in the strategy used - epilator choice, modality choice, probe choice and accurate insertions.

I have found it no longer necessary to adhere to the rule of no more than 15 minutes unless the client verbalizes that’s what they want. Healing-wise, there are no scabs or if there are, there a few very small pinpoint scabs, and there is pinkness. The biggest side effect is swelling that subsides in hours to a day and half. On a man’s upper lip, the swelling may last three days. I do tell the client the side effects that may occur and if they feel they can’t live with that, then we break up the initial clearance sessions. Most people opt for getting the hair off fast.

You can’t do this with every epilator or modality, so, adhering to a 15 minute treatment may be the only choice one has. You will still get to your goal, but I wanted to share something else that is possible and pleases the client greatly.

Dee, what you say makes perfect sense and you know that I believe this kind of work is completely possible.

But I still feel that a client who is working with an electrologist for the first time needs to err on the side of caution.

I was only happy in letting my electrologist treat my eyebrows when I had developed trust in her work and that she understood what I wanted to achieve. The upper lip is a delicate area and if the client hasn’t had previous first hand experience with a particular electrologist, it may be a better idea to take it slowly to begin with.

I agree. When you’re testing out an electrologist, I would not recommend going for 45 mins on a sensitive area like the upper lip.

Of course, it sounds like the poster is just going for a 45 min consultation first, so in this case, it doesn’t apply anyway.

I don’t think I will ever be able to convince people that this strategy works well, but I always try to share my “pearls” in the spirit of being progressive and forward moving. You can’t do this with just any set up, so it is wise advice to go with caution if you are using other strategies that don’t come close to what I offer. Most electrologists are highly adept at watching the skin’s surface and heed to caution if it looks like the skin is being overloaded. The ones that don’t, should stick to 15 minute work for an area that has 800-1,200 follicles per square centimeter.

Beate, is it ok to ask what method/probes/machine you use for your longer upper lip sessions?
I am guessing that it might be Pico or Micro flash(Apilus)/Laurier 002 probes?

Dee, even with the right set-up, there are electrologists who are not using it well. So just to be on the safe side (which is in everyone’s best interest) the client should be cautious until they are confident the electrologist is demonstrating the skill required.

“Most electrologists are highly adept at watching the skin’s surface and heed to caution if it looks like the skin is being overloaded.”
The above is how it should be. I would say that electrologists like yourself who are aware of how the skin is responding during treatment are not actually that prolific. Or it may just be my experience in the UK.

Unfortunately, there are many who will agree to longer sessions when they don’t have the skill/experience or set-up required.

I only had 30 mins

My apologies, I meant Dee, not Beate. Sorry Dee.
