Skin type 3 (I Think) quick confirmation?! (Pics)

I looked at the fitzpatrick skin thing and I think I am skin type 3. But if someone can help me verify that would be great! The red spots on my chin I got them from going under the sun with out any protection. I actually had electrolysis done there before at that exact spot. I think it might be sun burn but i’m not scratchy or peely. Oh I am looking into laser clinics that have the lightsheer machine. Do you guys think the lightsheer will be a good choice for my skin type and facial hair removal? Thank you in advance!

You’re light enough for Alexandrite and Diode lasers.

LightSheer Diode will work well as long as the hair is coarse. Once the hair becomes fine, you’ll have to switch to an Alexandrite laser (like GentleLase). GentleLase is also easier to use as compared to LightSheer diode and hence, a better choice.

Hi!

When you mean coarse do you mean thick and dark black and fine equals thin and transparent looking? I am not very knowledgeable with hair. I tried to look it up online and that was the only deduction I could tell. I did get laser treatment several years back and once they got all of the black hairs all i was growing was transparent hairs that you could not see but if you touched my face you could tell I had some lol

When you mean that gentle lase is easier to use than lightsheer diode… what exactly do you mean? Is it technique wise? Or is it the required power (Jeuls? Jewls?). Or is it something else? Perhaps length of session? Sorry for asking so many questions!

Coarse hair is generally the hair that leaves a stubble after you shave it. Gentlelase is easier to use technique wise (it’s less easier to miss spots.) Lightsheer works well when used properly, but it’s harder to find someone who knows how to use lightsheer well. With good settings, you can probably get a good reduction on the cheeks and neck, but the chin and upper lip probably will need electrolysis if you want that fully gone.

Ouch, electrolysis hurts! I had some done on my upper lip and wow the pain was something else! I tend to think I have an ok pain tolerance, but the lip was kind of a sensitive spot! The chin work was not so bad though. I believe I only had like 3 sessions done at the most. I was recently diagnosed with Wolf Parkingson white syndrome which they are now changing to Supraventricular Tachycardia or paroxymal Supraventricular Tachycardia. It looks like I might have the WPW pattern but with out the additional circuit in my heart. I have an appointment with an electrophysiologist in 3 months to find out more. I don’t know if doing electrolysis right now is a good idea. Mainly because of the prolonged pain and muscle tensing and well the electricity IF I do happen to have the extra circuit in my heart (Not sure how that’ll work with the electrical current in electrolysis?). so that is why I want to give laser another go.

Definitely the hair on my chin is coarse and leaves stubble after I shave. The cheeks not so much and mustache… I have not really paid attention there woops. I am searching around for prices here in Los Angeles for lightsheer and so far the best offer appears to be $125 per session. I think someone had a package for $93 per session but I still need to ask the full details (Involves membership stuff).

How about I search for some prices with the alexandrite/gentlelase and settle for whatever is cheapest :)? Good idea or bad idea? Thanks again for being so helpful!

Electrolysis doesn’t have to hurt, but to my understanding (I haven’t done electrolysis on my face… yet), the upper lip is more sensitive than other places. I have done laser on my beard so I can speak from experience from that. I don’t know too much/anything about WPW, but there are things you can do to reduce the pain, which ought to reduce tension you would do. I think you can buy lidocaine cream over the counter. Applying that 30-60 minutes before your treatment should reduce the pain (at least it does for laser – electrolysis experts can weigh in better than me, but I feel like I remember reading here that it can help reduce electrolysis pain as well).

Your cheeks will probably be fine. The beard is a very tricky area, so I wouldn’t go on price alone. You need to make sure that they overlap efficiently and they are using high settings. From my own personal experience, I’d look for laser at a dermatologist’s office rather than a spa, especially for the beard. You might end up paying more, but I have found they generally take better care of you (again, my own personal opinion.) I pay way more than I should for laser beard treatment, but in exchange, she gives me free lidocaine cream AND gives me lidocaine injections in my face. She also does my face twice, once with an alex laser and once with a YAG laser. Could I find a cheaper place? Most certainly, but she also takes very good care of me, so for me, it’s worth the extra money (somewhat haha). Why am I telling you all this? To give you an example that price alone is not a good measure of treatment.

You said you are in Los Angeles, right? I would run a search on the forum here. If you’re willing to drive a bit, I can give you a recommendation for a place someone on this forum gave me (I drive about an hour to go there. I’m from San Diego but it is well worth it.)

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, laser on the face hurts so much that you might end up being more tense with laser on your face than with electrolysis. Just a warning.

Hi!

The electrologist I saw did put on my lip some cream. I did not ask the name, but it did make my lip feel like… not swollen but kind of different. It was supposed to be a numbing cream. Even though it did numb my lip the needle and electricity still hurt a lot! She also said that the needle MIGHT be too long for you because I had some bleeding from her poking in too deep on one side of my lip. The lady has several years of experience from what she told me. Ms. Setsuda in Pasadena.

Yah I’m in L.A. Can you let me know of the place you can recommend? What kind of laser do they use there?

I thought the lightsheer was less painful than other lasers? The last lasers I had were painful, but I could take them. The only place that hurts a lot is the lip! One of the machines that was used on me was an Elos? It is a company located in Glendale. The results were not as good as the machine that was used in Fresno. I never did ask the name of it though, but it just was more effective.

I definitely need to consider experience over price, but I am just poor and really would rather spend less if possible. So far the prices I got were 125 250 and 300. I live in a studio with roomates and 250 is like almost what I pay in rent lol. I don’t mean to sound like a scrooge but after I was diagnosed with my heart condition it has been difficult to stay functional because I developed anxiety and depression :(. But I am making good progress to remedy that.

Oh I don’t have a car! So I hope the location you can recommend isn’t too far south  sorry.

You should ask an electrologist on this forum about bleeding, but that doesn’t sound to me like she was doing a good job. It might be more common than I know of but I haven’t read too much about people bleeding on here.

The place is called Coastline Dermatology. It’s in Costa Mesa. They have a Gentlelase there. They also are willing to use fairly aggressive settings and are “reasonably priced” (full legs is $350). I don’t know what they will charge for the face but you can call and ask. I want to say that they told me the beard area was $250, but I can’t remember truthfully. I use Rita there. She’s a PA. She’s very nice. I haven’t tried anyone else there, but I’m sure anyone would be fine. There are plenty of places in LA. I don’t go to LA that often, so I don’t know how far certain places are from you (I know of the train that goes along the 210/134), but this will mean more to you than to me:

I haven’t used Lightsheer so I can’t compare, but I know a number of people here who have had good settings on it write that it hurts. I don’t know anything about the Elos. It looks like it might be an IPL, which is less effective on the face (and in general!) You should ask the places what settings they would use on you. Then we can tell you if they will be effective.

HI  You are so helpful, thank you.

The link you gave me gives me an access denied response so I am not sure what to do there. I called the costa mesa dermatology and it is 250 for beard (They called it full face) removal.

Okay I just called this place http://www.bellevisage.com/ and I asked about their pricing. I was told that the regular price per session is 125$ but if you buy a package ( I think either 5 or 6 sessions) you get 30% off; so like 80$ something per session. They use the lightsheer luminus? xt, but the place is a Spa. The low price is really appetizing and they are located in L.A. which is where I am located.

I also called this other place and they offer a $99 first treatment special for first time customers. After that it is $128 per sessions for beard removal. http://www.avosant.com/ They also have a package of 4 treatments + 3(if needed) 512$. It doesn’t appear to be a spa more like a plastic surgery place located in Beverly hills. $99 is a good price I could certainly do :)! I know going with the cheapest isn’t the best, but I just don’t have a lot of $$.

So then with good settings the lightsheer hurts? I see… and I need good settings because I am getting my beard treated? What kind of settings do you think would be good for my beard? My beard really isn’t all that hard to the touch (Coarse?). I would say it feels about x2 or x2.5 hard than regular hair on my head. Like if I use the back of my hand I feel no rough poking as I run it through my beard. It feels more like normal hair rather than metallic stiff hairs, but it is thicker? than the hair on my head. Definitely not that hard though.

Can you ask them which model of LightSheer they have?

There are 3 models- ET-99mm spot size, XC- 1212mm, HS-12*35mm.

LightSheer duet has two of the above spot sizes-99mm and 1235mm

The best option would be XC-12mm*12mm.

Any laser treatment on a male beard, even at low settings, will hurt. You need to bear the pain. You can try icing+ pain killers+ a thick layer of numbing cream to minimize the pain.

I’d not be very worried about the settings for the first few(2-3)treatments as you don’t need high settings to treat an average male beard.

Hi Mumbaigirl!

Okay, I will give them a call and ask them what model they use. On the other hand I did a search for the alexandrite gentleLASE and I found a place that does full face for men for $40 using the GentleLASE 755 nm alexandrite laser. It is a plastic and cosmetic surgery place. http://www.losangeleshairreduction.com/hair-removal-laser.php The price seems to be pretty low compared the other places I called. I got quoted 150 per session at another place. Then another place gave me a price quote of 80$. I have read good reviews on the GentleLASE. Is $40 a common price for full face for men with GentleLASE???

I’m from India. Can’t comment on the prices. 40$ does sound to be cheap…but wait for other people to reply

Do they give a free patch test? If yes, have it and report the settings here.

I went to the $40 place and got a test spot done. The doc said it was extremely safe because of my skin type and that if there was any reaction we would know within 15 minutes. So I stepped out and what not. I got briefed on the prices and it turns out that full face = face and not throat/neck. That it would be +25$ which I think is still a good deal. But the lady was extremely hyper not sure why and it made me feel a little uncomfortable on top of the additional charge. So I ended up saying that I would return for the full treatment. Then I forgot about asking what settings they used on me LOL. I was talking to the machine operator and I told him about the wolf parkingson white syndrome and he asked me if I had the extra circuit in my heart. I told him the docs weren’t 100% sure and they were still looking into it. It makes me wonder if WPW people with the extra circuit can potentially have problems with laser treatment???

I have no idea…you need to see a VERY good doctor
