Skin Numbing Agents

I decided to try thermolysis (sp?) to see how it compares with the multi-needle galvanic treatments I had been receiving.

Tears were streaming down my face with the pain. I did not have this kind of pain with the galvanic.

I believe EMLA is only available via prescription. Is there anything I can purchase over the counter that will numb my skin beforehand?

Also, does taking an aspirin right before treatment help?

Thanks

You should talk to your electrologist about adjusting the settings or find a different electrologist… thermolysis should not be that painful.

A skilled electrologist with modern equipment doing thermolysis should in most cases be less painful than galvanic or blend.

Upper lip can be a sensitive area, follow the above advice and discuss options with your electrologists, try blend or pico flash. Some of my clients buy Emla from Amazon, or over the counter from the chemist, no need for a prescription.

You should be able to buy PFB Numb-it. My friends who are using it think it’s great.

Mhmm, some people are so sensitive, that even the comparatively small pain caused by work in the 70-EL range with Multiplex on the Platinum - if the clients are lucky to have sufficiently fine hairs - is sufficient to cause tears. I belong to those myself.

Very true, indeed - i know the difference from my own experience as a client. But as mentioned above, tears can often enough not be avoided, at least immediately under the nose.

So what You can and should expect from an optimized treatment with modern equipment is (strongly) reduced pain - but please do not take tears as the measure; this might fail.

As to EMLA: it can be bought OTC here in germany. I find it a bit hard to apply on the upper lip mainly because a good occlusion cannot be done - so the numbing effect is usually reduced im comparison to other sensitive areas which are easier to cover.

A first test with Dr. Numb done by a client short time ago was indeed promising: quick numbing even without the need to apply an occlusion of the target area.

There is another one: Anestesis. Not OTC, and in electrolysis applications its advertized numbing effect within 20 min without the need to cover the target will not work. Anestesis seems to be quite good if it is applied similarly to EMLA, and then it is a lot less expensive than EMLA is.
