Should I find a new electrologist?

I’m getting electrolysis done on my penis and have been going every 4 weeks for the last 11 months. Each session is approximately 50 minutes and all the hair is removed. I’m due to have my 12th session in a few weeks and am a bit disgruntled by my lack of hair reduction. There has been some reduction, but I had assumed that after 12 months I would be completely clear. This electrologist is well respected and works closely with the biggest transgender hospital in the country so I’m surprised by my lack of progress.

I notice that a lot of electrologists on this forum suggest doing a full clearing and then waiting 2 - 3 months. Should I start booking an appointment every 8 weeks instead of every 4? I have to travel a long distance to see my electrologist and it’s becoming extremely expensive.

Alternatively, should I be looking for a new electrologist?

Gosh, I don’t want to end up being “the penis guy,” but I will attempt an answer regarding “The Schnitzel” … that’s the medical term, by the way. (Besides, Dee Dee asked me to respond and I can’t say “no” to her.)

Simple math, using your figures, gives me about 10 hours of work you’ve had. That’s excessive; more like 4 - 5 total would be in line with this deal.

I would suggest stopping completely and waiting a full 3 months (or longer) to see what “comes back.” I mean, you can get “plucked” for years and a LOT of patients have this happen to them.

After this waiting period, if you see a BIG reduction in hair, then “whoopee!” If not, move on and complain like hell! That’s what I’d do anyway.

Thanks for getting back to me. How can it happen that people can go for years but never see any progress? Are they never getting the hairs in the anagen stage?

If I see progress after waiting 3 months, is it best to wait another three months or how should I proceed?

“plucked” means “plucked”. As in, exactly what happens when you get a pair of tweezers and manually remove the hair yourself. NOT what happens when a good electrologist destroys the hair follicle.

11 months and 50 minute appointments… you SHOULD definitely have seen a reduction.

Waiting 3 months without an appointment will allow you to really SEE that reduction. If you can’t see any different to how it was before these sessions… don’t wait another three months, tell your electrologist that you’re unhappy with the lack of reduction.
if, after waiting three months you do see a reduction that you’re happy with, keep going.

Be prepared to find a new electrologist if you are unhappy with the lack of results.

Hair follicles can be disabled in any stage of growth - not ONLY anagen as we were all taught in school. It all about energy (timing and intensity). Hair has to be punched good and hard. Without pictures, it is hard to determine what is going on with you, but I would think you would have been looking pretty good by now, even though it would be too soon to be finished.

What other details can you provide? Was it painful? Did you feel any tweezing sensation? Anything else?

Agree 100% with Emilily, yep.

Your statement, “Are they never getting the hairs in the anagen stage” makes me toss a “red flag on that play." I’m guess that you got the “can only kills hairs in anagen” nonsense? I wouldn’t be completely astonished if you also got the “we treat each hair a few times, and each time it comes back it’s weaker” routine? Maybe you got the “Your hair roots are really fat, so that’s why you feel a ‘pluck’ when I take out the hair?”

I hope not. These ideas are excuses for sub-standard treatment: unadulterated BS!

I was talking with Jossie about these issues, and about the “anagen only” stuff … and here’s a photo of the two of us having a civilized conversation about this … (Dee Dee took the photo.)

Which one of you is the fox ?

Seana

Unfortunately she has said everything you said there… I think it might be time to find a new electrologist. I’m kind of surprised because she has a really good reputation. The fact that I have little reduction further backs up that she isn’t very good.

Yikes!

Reputations … I’m NOT big on them; I want to see concrete results (I mean numbers). A “reputation” should be only about the follicle (and dispatching it) … nothing else matters.

Indeed, there are numerous practitioners with stellar reputations that suck at the work. Sorry, I have to say this.

Every person seeking hair removal services MUST learn how to distinguish superior operators from those that only have a puffed-up “stage presence.” The spoken (or written) word is useless. Don’t “fall for it!”

With electrolysis, you want a “worker bee,” not a “Queen bee!”

I’m thinking about this some more and have an idea.

I don’t know where you live “Sensei” (but I do know what Sensei means.) If you stop treatment for, say, 3 months and let everything grow back, I will finish you up for free. (It will take 3 visits.) Let me know. This episode is ridiculous for something that should take virtually NO time at all!

Don’t choose someone solely based on the CPE initial bestowed on those that take an extra test and have the alphabet behind their name either. Those initials don’t always equate with better work, sensation, healing and outcome. I certainly don’t discourage anyone from going the extra mile to get their CPE, but it doesn’t mean they are better at what they do. Give anybody a chance regardless of their extra certifications. You’d be surprised what you may find.

Thanks for the offer Michael, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately I’m in the UK though and logistically flying out to Santa Barbra 3 times would be quite difficult, not to mention pricey. Believe me when I say I’ve considered it!

I just emailed another electrologist in Scotland that is willing to do genital electrolysis so hopefully she has some availability. In the meantime, does anyone else know of any experienced electrologists in or near the UK that are willing to do genital electrolysis? Due to other commitments my criteria for finding an electrologist are somewhat awkward as I need one that is relatively close to an airport so that I can fly there early in the morning and come back late at night.

I feel a bit silly for having stayed with this electrologist for so long despite the lack of improvement. I have been flying to see her over last year and have essentially wasted my time and money. It’s funny how you know something isn’t working, but you want it to work so badly that you stick with it!

Every 4 weeks? All the hair is being removed? if so, your electrologist was always working in the anagen phase.

What do you think, Seana? he he

If Michael was a canine, he undoubtedly would be a St. Bernard, the best dog rescue that may exist.

Yeah, she was removing all the hair every 4 weeks. Is this a good or a bad thing?

I wish I could go and visit you too, but you are also a bit too far away! :frowning:

Here’s an example of how the hair should be treated (same area) to achieve zero regrowth.
