Should I attempt electrolysis?

Hi, I’m a 36 year old female, half arabic and half english - I have thick black hair and somewhat pale skin. When I was in high school, I had electrolysis on my upper lip area and it worked - i do not have any growth there. Then about 10 years ago, I spent thousands of dollars on many laser treatments on the rest of my face - beard area and upper neck. It never worked and in fact, my problem there is now worse. The hairs are coarser than they were before. For the past 7 years I have been raising children and have just been plucking or threading my face. My internist once gave me a prescription for a cream that she said could work, but I didn’t want to use it because I was breast-feeding my baby at the time.

So now I’m ready to try again. I’m somewhat frightened to try laser again for fear that i’ll spend a lot of money and not resolve the problem. I’d try electrologist if I could find the right person (i’m in Portland, ME). And I’d use that prescription cream if it works. I don’t know what route to go and worse, I don’t know what kind of doctor can help me. Does anybody out there have any advice for me with regards to who to talk to about my problem or what removal route to try? I know i’m posting this in the electrolysis forum, but i wasn’t sure where to post and it seems like electrolysis might be my best bet? Does laser frequently not work like it didn’t for me? Does electrolysis ever not work?

thanks in advance.

I would stop laser on the face for sure. Laser can work if done properly (i.e. good settings and on coarse, dark hair – legs are a good example of this), but it rarely works on female faces. I would go with electrolysis on the face. If you want to do laser, you could do it in other areas not prone to stimulating hair growth, like the legs and forearms. Much like laser, electrolysis won’t work if done improperly.

If you’re going to start electrolysis, you’re going to need to stop plucking and threading. Here are some places to start looking (I have no idea how far these places are away from you):

Here is a list of AEA members who practice in Portland. I believe that it is very important to interview (consult with) several before making a selection.

My best to you.

My bad…I hope this is Maine: http://electrology.com/find.html?st=0&state=ME

Makes it confusing when there are more famous cities than where you are going. I kept trying to get tickets to Ontario, CA…California, not Canada!

Ooooh… that’s not too far from me. Come treat me!! haha
