Several hairs in almost every follicle

This question is directed towards some of the experts who have seen many people over the years:

I have several hairs coming from each follicle over large portions of my body- I just noticed how widespread this is on me. Apparently this is called Pili multigemini - its supposedly very rare. Is this indeed very rare?

I am really quite a hairy person- I struggle with hair all over my body (half middle eastern) that is mostly vellus but I have had to get quite alot of hair removal (laser and electrolysis on my face)- a project I intend to continue.

Sometimes I wonder why the hair looks so intense - this is when I realized I have two hairs coming from each shaft. sometimes it looks like there are two or more hairs but they are really just next to eachother. Other times they really are coming from the same root.

This is mainly on my stomach but also elsewhere

is this really rare?

can these be removed with electrolysis?

I hate feeling so embarrassed of my body almost all the time.

Are you male or female? Is any of the hair coarse?

Generally, it only seems like there is more than one hair in the same follicle. Under magnification, you can usually see that they’re just very close together.

This isn’t odd or weird. It’s pretty normal. Middle Easterners generally have more hair than others on average. Just the genes.

Hi there! thanks for your reply!

I actually plucked them and had a good look and yes, it really is several hairs from the same root. I am female, the hair I am referring to specifically is pretty fine (for me) but there is also thicker hair towards the bikini line that is bifurcated like this.

i can’t remember if its always been like this- is it really true that any amount of waxing can worsen vellus hair growth (thicker, longer, bifurcated?)

That’s exactly what my hair looks like. I thought I was the only one. Mine usually look like they have 2 or 3 hairs popping out of the same follicle. It’s gotten better since getting laser treatments though.

No, it isn’t - at least two hairs from one follicle is pretty common.

can these be removed with electrolysis?

Yes, of course. No problem. Our daily business.

Look at this picture:

Two follicles are crossed. It’s like open scissors. The 2 hair meet at the exact point of departure to the surface of the skin. It seems to depart from the same place, when in reality, each follicle follows a different path under the skin.

yep same here…

I had 2 to 3 hairs sometimes coming from the same opening…Electrolysis solved the problem though…

One of my clients had 9 visible hairs growing from what appeared to be the same follicle on her legs.(This was consistent all over her legs.) While to the naked eye, they almost look to come from the same follicle, they are more like the photo shown above - coming out of one spot, but coming from several angles. It’s like we have these lines in our body that have a collection of follicles at the intersections… Wish there could be some research on that topic!!!

She understood that seeing 9 hairs per spot meant that she had the potential for at least half again as many dormant hairs under the skin. She was thrilled with her results and has sent her daughters in for various areas.

(She was a black haired Swedish woman, whose shaved legs still showed the black shadow of hair.)
