Searching in NYC

I don’t know anyone who’s had laser hair removal, so I’ve relied on the experiences of people online…until I discovered that the great reviews of some laser hair specialist may possibly have been ads. So, I decided to look on CitySearch. I narrowed it down to two in NYC: Romeo and Juliette Laser Hair Removal Center and Laser Nurse (in the Village). They both have excellent reviews, but I don’t understand the differences in equipment. Should I be looking out for something?

Laser Nurse uses Lightsheer Diode and the Palomar SLP 1000.
Romeo and Juliette uses Candela’s GentleLASE Plus® alexandrite laser and Cynosure’s Smartepil II® Nd:YAG.
I got this info from their sites.

I haven’t gone to a consultation yet. I feel that if I go to either one, they’ll both tell me they have the perfect laser for me. The only reason why I’m leaning toward Laser Nurse is because she seems to be a little less expensive, and I cannot afford to spend top dollar for 6 treatments. She’s one of the best according to CitySearch, and I couldn’t find any bad reviews when I googled her.

So, when searching for a specialist, what am I to look for? How do you know which laser is better? What do you compare when shuffling through several candidates?

Thanks

You ask wonderful questions and until lagirl can offer her ideas, I will just say this to you. From all I have learned about laser over the last several years, it sounds like Romeo and Juliet offer laser systems that are appropriate for all skin colors. I’ve come to understand that the owner of R&J’s is very experienced, so that is a plus.

Laser Nurse might be great as well, however, I’m thinking the Palomar is a super long pulsed diode?? So there is not a variety wavelengths to choose from if you have darker skin.

What area’s do you want treated? skin color? amount and coarseness of hair?

Dee

the answer will depend on some information you haven’t provided, like your skin and hair type and the area you want treated. also, don’t know if you realize this, but you can find reviews on both of these places on this site if you use the search feature right here. the owner of R&J actually participates on these forums. (the other is the cosmetic enhancements forum). You can just search for your city and find some recommendations.

btw, please read the FAQs before you start anything if you haven’t already: http://www.hairtell.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/35257/page/1#Post35257

Amygdala ( Almond ):

I usually do not reply to potential customers, as I do not want it to be misunderstood, however, I wanted to mention the following:
We have 6 lasers in our facility. They brands are:
Mini Gentlelase Plus by Candela
Cynosure Apogee Elite
Lightage Epicare LPX

Our new website will be up and running within a few days and it will reflect these corrections.

Laser Nurse is a good facility to go to in New York. She is quite experienced and more economical in pricing than we are. You would get good results in both facilities.

As I haven’t gone to a consultation yet, I can’t give you my skin type. All I can say is that I have pale skin and dark, coarse hair. I want to do my forearms, abdomen, and legs. From what I’ve seen online, this will cost a fortune (seeing as I’m not rich…yet. lol) I think the worst part of having this problem is not the fact that I have the problem, it’s more that the solution is so close yet so unattainable. There is technology to help me, but I can’t afford it. That’s the most depressing part. I suffered a decade of severe depression and suicidal ideation. I think insurance should cover this like they would cover mental health. Sometimes, I just want to set my hair on fire.

If money is an issue and you don’t mind, you can pay with a credit card at most places. I’m not sure what your situation is and what you consider a “fortune”, but a part-time job can also bring you enough money to cover the treatments.

That’s how I paid for my hair removal needs years ago. It wasn’t easy, but I did it somehow.

By the way, lagirl, do you know when the cosmetic enhancement forums will be back again or if they will be back online?

that forum is back today. i guess they didn’t extend their domain subsciption in time.

glad you aren’t going to american laser center!

I just found a horror story about Laser Nurse. Any thoughts?

This person is saying that she got badly burned because the hair wasn’t shaved very closely. I find it hard to believe that that was the actual reason. It could have been a number of things, including a tan. I’ve read numerous reviews about this person on these forums, and for the most part they are very good. Either way, there are tons of clinics in NYC. You don’t have to go here.
