Sciton / NDyag - Coolglide Cutera lasers?

A clinic near me is offering these two lasers:

  • Sciton
  • NDyag - Coolglide Cutera
    Any feedback on these?
I am (mostly) light skinned with dark hair male.

The clinic is Dermedica Laser & Spa in Toronto.
Any feedback on Dermedica? (can be as personal message if preferred)

Thanks!

Sorry to say this but an NDYAG laser on Skin type 1-2 will not produce long lasting permanent hair reduction. You will need an Alexandrite laser to finish off the treatments.

I assume you’re looking at the groupon team buy thing this place has? Both are yags so only good on very dark coarse hair. I’ve had great results with the yag on my face where the hair is very dark and coarse, the alexandrite had no effect here since it can’t go deep enough.

I wouldn’t use a yag on other areas of the body though, look around for other clinics. It seems like there’s 2 or 3 laser places on these group buy things every week.

What area are you treating and is all the hair coarse? A Yag would work only on the very coarse hair. Then you’ll still need an alexandrite to finish.

Areas include

  • upper back (back of neck)
  • on top of shoulders (few cm sq each)
  • lower back (4 inch sq)

I am type 3 skin, dark hair.

The machine used is Sciton BBL.

As mentioned in your other new thread, you should NOT be treating any spots where the hair is not coarse and dense, especially since these areas are prone to induced growth.

Hi everyone,

I’m new to this forum and it’s been extremely helpful so far!

I recemtly purchased a Teambuy voucher for unlimited laser hair removal at Dermedica (same one you mention)!

They advertised on their voucher that they are “Currently using the ND Yag Cutera CoolGlide and Sciton Technologies”. Before I booked my appointment, I asked whether they could use the ND Yag machine on me since I have Type IV skin (I am Asian) and have used ND Yag successfully before at Bellair Laser Clinic (I know, overpriced but very effective). They replied yes. Before my treatment began, I asked the technician whether she was using the ND Yag machine on me and she said yes.

I knew each machine has a different name (different manufactuerers, models, etc.) so I decided to take a picture of the machine. Turns out that the machine that was used on me was a Sciton BBLs (640nm)!!!

I went on the Sciton website and it looks like this technology is an IPL instead of laser. I’m not sure of the difference but I hear that laser is more effective than IPL. What are everyone’s thoughts?

Should I call to complain and request a refund since the technology is not as effective and they deceived me? Should I continue with the treatments (if IPL is just as effective)? Should I call to ask if they even have the ND Yag Cutera CoolGlide machine and if so, specifically request to use that machine only to continue my treatments?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi there,

The same clinic as listed in the original post is offering the same deal with the Cutera Coolglide ND Yag and Sciton system.

My question is this: I’m a type 2 skin type (I think), but the area I’m interested in treating is the male brazilian - my genital and perianal hair is quite dark and coarse. Would this laser system still be inappropriate based upon my skin type despite the darker hair?

Thanks!

It would be better if you can find a clinic that uses an alex laser like GentleLASE or Apogee. There are many deals around nowdays via various discount sites. I would also not commit anywhere without a visit and test spot so you can make sure they use aggressive settings and don’t undertreat.

Coolglide and Sciton are both Yags. They will work on very coarse hair on any skin type. But Alex is more powerful and should be used for best results on lighter skin that can handle it.

Thanks for your quick/helpful response, LAgirl!

I’ve found another deal being offered, with the LightSheer cosmetic laser. If I can’t find the GentleLASE or Apogee systems, would that still be suitable?

Thanks!

LightSheer is a diode. It’s good in good hands. It’s harder to use than some other machines. Between that and Coolglide or Sciton, I’d go with whoever actually uses aggressive settings.

You should also go for consultations at places with good reviews. “Deals” can be had by walking in and negotiating prices. LHR prices vary a ton. So just because it’s a deal doesn’t mean it’s cheaper than another place’s regular price.
