Scared To Trim Arms :(

Okay i’m 22 recently single and starting to date alot. Over the past year I have for some reason developed hairy hands and its also especially bad around the wrist and lower forearm! the hair is very thin but basically black. I personally hate it and try to hide it at all costs when i’m out on a date. I v also had friends and a few girls poke fun at it which doesent help in the matter. I guess i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how they went about it?? My biggest fear if I do end up trimming it is its going to grow back thicker or darker (by darker i mean on the hairs that are fairly light colored) please, any input would be awsome! Thx, Eric

That will not happen. What you heard is an urban legend and has no basis in fact. You may start with a trimmer that has an adjustable guide. Trim off a little bit at a time until you get the look that you want.

I kept trimming it shorter and shorter until I finally shaved my arms clean. If you work out with weights and have any muscular development on your arms, you should at least consider shaving them.

As RJC2001 said, it is not true. I have shaved my arms many years in a row for medical procedures and the hair looks the same today as the first time I shaved it. (My arms are one of the few places I didn’t have the hair permanently removed.)

the only problem with shaving over trimming is stubble

I have a similar question. I’d like to know what the group thinks. If someone removes chest hair - should they remove the hair on their arms? Is it better for the upper body to be consistent (smooth arms, chest, etc.) - or does it not matter?

This is entirely POV, but my feeling is that you don’t need to shave or wax everything if you shave/wax your chest. You can still have a “balanced” overall appearance – you might not even need to think about trimming the arm hair, if the difference between your skin and hair colour is negligible or small, or if your hairs are short.

If there’s a great difference in colour between skin + hair, or if hairs are long, you might consider trimming with clippers with a guard on. I’ve become a big fan of this method for arms, and I’m sure it can be used on fingers, etc., too. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the fastest, most painless, most convenient way to go. It’s done dry, no lathering necessary; no cuts, no worries; and clippers are an inexpensive, one-time cash commitment. It takes me about 5 minutes to do both arms.

My final pro-clippers argument is that the result looks natural, on the day you do it, and right up until you decide to do it again. Like WAAX said, with shaving you are inevitably concerned with stubble; with clippers there’s no stubble, so you don’t feel paranoid and worried about being restricted to long-sleeved shirts.

I’ve posted all of this elsewhere, so I apologize for repeating myself. I just feel so liberated from what I experienced as aggravations with every other method (for arms, that is; as a female, I deal with legs in less happy ways) that I want to share it.

Like others say, it is subjective. But to me it doesn’t make sense to have a hairless chest and have hairy arms. But that is just IMHO. If your arms aren’t that hairy then it is not such a big deal. But if you have any arm muscle development, they definitely look better hairless. I say it is better to look balanced.

They’re not hairy - but the hair is noticeable. But the chest is now essentially hair free. Unlike the person with the original problem, mine is kind of the opposite. I’m more concerned with what people would say if the arms go hairless…

It just seems like this is really POV, but the answers I’ve heard back are mixed.

Hi

As you say the answers are mixed. Most of us on this forum are in favour of complete hair removal I would say. I try for complete leg hair removal, but still trim my chest and arms. I have found that my arms start to look untidy after a while and that is when I trim them. The hairs are light and fine, but grow too long after a while. Nobody has ever remarked when I trim them.

I have a blonde complexion so it doesn’t show too much when I trim my arms, because it looks natural on me. With my legs I have found a shaved look much more natural than a hairy look. For some reason despite having blonde hair and light arm hairs I inherited long dark leg hairs which in context look very unusual. Despite being male, shaved legs look better on me and most everyone accepted this as my natural look. I think shaved arms can also fall into this catagory.

Stuart

Hi Rain!
I hope you’re still reading this forum! What brand of trimmer are you using and at what setting? I’m in Europe and the settings on most hair trimmers here range from 1-21 mm. I have no idea what would be the “right” setting for the arms and fingers. I think that 1-5 mm would be too short but I dunno!

Any ideas or suggestions would be great!
