Results / possible burn..

I am skin type 3 male, 20 years old, have been using spf 50 sunblock for a month, and went to a laser hair center 9 days ago to treat my beard/neck. I have very dense hair, shaving once or twice per day, and wanted to give this a try. They used a coolglide nd:yag laser on settings “50 and 25” and it hurt badly. I was told these were low settings. After 3 days, I saw blisters entirely across my chin and a few other areas. These areas turned to scabs and here at day 9, some have still not completely fallen off. When I went back to the laser hair removal center after 3 days and showed them what happened, they said they had never seen that happen before; apparently, i’m very sensitive to the laser.

I would never want to sue just for the sake of money (and I’m not sure if I could even if I wanted to.) However, if these scabs to turn to scars, could they be liable so far as to at least pay any procedures required to remove these scars? I’m not looking for a free handout; I just want whatever they did to be returned to the way it was before. These questions are probably a little premature, but I’m just thinking ahead.

I am in the same boat. The last visit I went in for LHR on my neck they burned me badly (after 2 treatments with no problems). I am working on trading in the remains of my treatment package for microdermabrasion. Lesson learned.

Hmmm, should we be compiling these experiences into a section all their own for easy reference?

I’m not sure these sound like burns. It sounds more like irritation on your skin because you’re treating a male beard area, which is very dense and coarse. Many men are warned about a lot of irritation on this area that can last several weeks. Are you applying pure aloe vera daily? did you stop using facewashes? It’s only been 9 days. It should resolve within another week or two. You should show this to your clinic and take pictures regardless. Things like this resolve themselves, so make sure you have proof just in case.

Does anyone know if it is correct that the irritation can be a sign that the treatment did work?

OP I hope this lets up for you soon!

after a good treatment, the follicles are usually red and raised for up to a few days. it can be longer for men’s facial hair. pure aloe vera gel needs to be used daily to help with healing.

some people can have a histamine reaction to laser treatment too. taking an anti-histamine beforehand can help.

Baically the setting was too high on your skin type and for the amount of follicles. As the follicles are so close together and skin in between the follicles thin and delicate, it is easy for the actual shafts to build up enough heat to damage skin tissue. The treatments have to be done at a lower setting with little to no overlap and have the client return for a touch up in a week or two. I have done many Portugese, Italian, Arab men and haven’t had an issue. Overlapping pulses on a man’s beard is brutal.
