Reputable Electrolysis in NYC area

I am wondering if anyone can recommend an electrolysis in NYC that they have used. I do not want to waste my money going to someone who does not know what they are doing. I live in NYC and I do not want to travel as I will be going once a week every week.

have you tried the search feature already?

Worth the trip to Queens:

Danna Homburger is close to me. Have you used her? I went to Maria Vega for a consultation last week. I went to her because of the posts I saw here but I must say she was not very nice or professional. I set up an appointment for a consultation. I expected to sit down with her and have some time for some questions and answers and thought maybe she would take a look at me and my situation first before she could tell me anything. There was no time for any of that. There was no consultation. She went right to work on my face. I was really irritated afterwards, I told her I was sensitive prior to. When we were done I had to ask her twice where I could get ice or something for my swollen face. She made me pay and then directed me to some sort of dirty kitchen area where I had to set up my own ice pack. She did not seem very concerned with how the treatment went for me nor whether I would ever be back. I was very disappointed as I know she comes highly reccommended and does get good results. I got my treatment done on Tuesday adn I still have scabs and bumps on my face which I think may be normal but I would still like to try and find someone else. Someone who I can feel comfortable with considering I am going to be seeing this person once a week for a year. Soooooo, after all that my question is have you actually gone to Donna? Does she offer informative consulations and take her time with you? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cathy,

I am very sorry about your experience with Maria Vega.

I did have a few treatments with Maria and found her to be quite good (no complaints on my part). One thing i noticed is that she isn’t afraid to use high settings (i’m still working on some hyperpigmentation from treatments several months ago but i’m sure they’ll clear up).

Anyways, yes, Danna is WONDERFUL. I have visited her a few times and found her to be professional, courteous, and conscientious. She’s just a little on the expensive side (call for her rates) for Manhattan but she is worth every penny. She strikes me as a truly passionate electrologist - she is more than willing to share her experiences. She is also one of the few electrologists I know who aren’t dogmatic about laser hair removal - she offers that service but has a balanced view of its effectiveness, particularly on women. So, definitely give her a shot.

I know her main office is on the upper west side - she is covering for another electrologist on maternity leave who has (a very nice!) office in the e 30’s.

As of recent, I think Danna is NOT recommending laser treatment on women’s faces (concern is stimulating hair growth). But she definitely is comfortable working on faces with electrolysis.

Best of luck!

p.s. I left out a few others because I forgot them but if you need some more referrals I’d be happy to share them with you.

How much is expensive. Maria charged me $45 for 20 minutes and said 30 minutes would be $55. Is that the going rate? Maybe I still have scabs and bumps because Maria’s high settings? Now I am nervous about hyperpigmentation!!! I would like maybe one more referral if you have it. I will make an appointment with Danna but think maybe I should try a few? I do not want to waste my time and or money. I have very few dark hairs on my chin but lots of blond hair I want removed from my face. Have you used all these people in NYC yourself?

Dear real_sore,

I feel touched and honored to be on your list of preferred electrologists.

As one whose life has been impacted by hirsutism (PCOS and all that comes with it) I feel what it is like to suffer from unwanted hair and I know one does not have to be born female or have PCOS to experience this distress.

I try to keep my rates low enough so that I am affordable as electrolysis requires several visits. This keeps me on the outskirts of Manhattan as in Manhattan, the high rates have to cover for the high overhead.

Thank you real.

Dear Cathy,

If you are unable to find someone in Manhattan who will provide you with the quality treatment to meet your expectations, and if you are willing to make the trip to Queens, I invite you to visit me for a complimentary consultation and an initial 15 minute trial treatment for a nominal fee.

I will work on a link, just for hairtell readers, offering a trial 15 minute treatment for only $10. This link will not be listed on my homepage so you will have to know the exact address to get in.

You do not have to feel obligated to use my services after this initial treatment. My goal is to provide you with enough information so that you can begin your own interviewing process and hopefully, this will enable you to find an electrologist in your own community.

Although the Hairtell moderator does not always approve of the way I express myself on her board, I am very passionate about this profession. I devote some of my time to developing electrology curriculum and teaching electrolysis; I could easily use that time to administer treatments and generate far more income.

I ask the readers here - please let each one of us know - if we are doing anything during treatment that is questionable - please ask us about it.

Cathy, I look forward to hearing from you.

Cathy, it’s best to give Danna a call to get reliable figures. She is slightly more expensive per hour than Maria, but not much more.

Arlene, I have mixed feelings about recommending you in a public forum.

Above all, I am extremely happy with the results I have gotten in many sessions with you.

And I have no reservations whatsoever recommending you.

However, that means it’s going to be that much harder for me to book an appointment with you. lol.

Dear real,

I don’t share time here to generate
new business because if I did,
I would be wasting my time
as it hasn’t generated
business. I come here because I
love chatting “hair removal” with
other obsessives.

Although I have clients
who read Hairtell, they found me
through other sources; mostly from
actual client referrals and
from the industry’s credentialing
hair removal organizations
like SCMHR and AEA.

If my experience reflects what goes on,
folks are not likely to visit me
because of a referral from an anonymous
poster on a non association bulletin board.

Also, for some reason, folks believe that
Manhattan is the place to go, not Queens.

So, I will always be able to fit you in…
as long as you are able to book in advance…

All the best,

Arlene,

Knock on wood!

Enjoy your holiday!

I agree with Arlene. If electrolysis practitioners were only here trying to troll up business, they would be getting a very small return on investment. Those who think that electrologists on this board are taking their business away have to get real. If posting on here filled the books, more people would be doing it. Since it is only a karmic donation thing, it is left to those who care about people they don’t know, never met, will never meet, and won’t ever profit from. It is a wonder we have as many professional posters as we do… and even that took 5 years to build up. Thank G-d I am no longer the only electrologist posting in here anymore.

Arlene and James,

You two have a very good outlook on this matter. When I went to the PRO status with the board, I was acting as a locum for a friend who went to Hawaii for 2 weeks to be there for her grandaughter’s first baby. I can’t see that this did me any good whatsoever as my practice is 400 miles north of there. I’m also at the stage of setting up my practice where my only cilent has the initials DIY.

Just like in dentistry, medicine, or any other field, there are 2 types of practitioners. Those who go into a field because they love people and have an honest desire to be helpful and those who struggle to get into a profession because they see a BMW at the end of the tunnel.

I jumped into this post for 2 reasons only:

 1. In reading through this board, I saw and personally identified with a lot of the people posting here. I was able to relate a lot of things that I’ve gone through over the last few years and hoped that my experiences would help save others some time and money.

 2. As a licensed electrologist, I’ve seen a host of problems that people incur through their own efforts (or lack thereof) and feel that if I can give out information that will help others get more for their dollar, with less discomfort, then I have accomplished something.

I do not see where any of this will be of any practical benefit to me when I open my practice. Most of the posters on this board are way too far away from where I’n setting up practice to be of any possible business value to me whatsoever.

I for one am very glad that people of the caliber of James, Dee, and others are making a big difference in how people are utilizing electrolysis, and speaking from my own experience, “They ain’t making one thin dime” for their efforts!

Joanie

Joanie, I mentioned in another post last week that basically, I am a very, very selfish person that comes to hairtell because the hair removal client teaches me more about their world of hair dispair than I could ever hope to learn about anywhere else.

Also, my motivation for showing up is to correct misinformation about electrolysis. We are in a profession that is being clobbered daily by the scammers and the news media, with the news media and laser companies and laser owners touting LASER as the best and fastest way to go. Though I am an advocate of LASER hair reduction, depending on the candidate and area treated, I am deeply irritated when the scammers and the media portray or outright lie about the time, pain, cost factors and ultimate so-so outcome of having electrolysis. Of course, there are some electrologists that fit this description, but there are many that do not. The overhyping of LASER and the bashing of electrolysis slashes away at a very good and a very appropriate permanent hair removal option that has had a pretty darn good track record for the last 130 years. Many people who would benefit gloriously from electrolysis are left believing that only LASER will solve all their hair problems. When they are left with some hair reduction, no hair reduction, laser-induced hair growth, they become laser failures with no money and there is no one handing them their money back for a service that didn’t deliver as it was suggested it would in “Glamour Magazine” or “Oprah Magazine”.

As we see the truth unfold here on hairtell, we can understand the benefits of using maybe just one of the modalities or maybe using both modalities together to bring a positive outcome to a hairy guy or gal. While I’m at it, I must compliment another dedicated poster here, lagirl, for her honesty about using both methods. She has been very vocal on the other two hair forums to correct misinformation and I’d like to thank her publically.

When I show up here on hairtell (or other forums)my motivation is not to fight for my livihood $$$$, but rather to insist on a decent and honest exchange of information that helps that little 14 year old Arizona girl with her upper lip hair, or the skater boy here in Ohio with his unibrow, or the laser-induced hair growth female hiding in her house in Georgia.

Now this is getting too deep and it’s time for me to shift gears. It’s the 4th of July and I’m going out to have some fun tonight!

Love,
Dee

thanks Dee. it’s appreciated

[color:“purple”] [/color] Hi Dee,

I have absolutely no disagreement with anything in your post. I have worked on a lot of post-laser clients. Some did get a good degree of hair reduction, but some that I’ve seen were worsened by the practice and had some severe skin damage from having laser done.

I agree that many of the laser clincs out there are overstating the case for the “permanence” of laser hair removal and bashing electrology at every opportunity. It will be interesting to see what the long-term effects of laser will be in terms of overall health of the skin. If I didn’t believe fully in the permanence of electrology, based on it’s 130-year history, I would have chosen another career path.

Having been on both sides of the probe, and still having a couple of years of electrology work to be performed on myself to reach my goals, I’ve had a lot of ups and downs during the time that I’ve been having treatments. I am here to encourage others to go ahead, but to avoid some of the pitfalls that I’ve encountered. Knowlege will set you free and, most likely save people some cash and discomfort.

I really appreciate what you do and am learning a lot from your posts. Keep up the good work!
Hugs,
Joanie

Hi:

I underwent 9 laser sessions with Lightsheer Laser Diode
for my facial hair. Even though it was partially effective, I have since undergone over 100 hours of electrolysis.

The laser did help with some of the dark ones, but not nearly as much as I expected it to. I still had loads of them, plus the lighter colored hairs which needed electrolysis.

Alicia

Speaking of PASSION…

I have had a lot of treatment hours. I lost track after the first 200 hours, and I must have seen about 2 dozen+ electrologists and a handful of laser hair removal providers.

In my experience, the most passionate electrologists I have encountered had undergone electrolysis themselves. They tend to be women who live with PCOS and other physical conditions which cause hormone imbalances and thus excess unwanted body and facial hair.

These people are often the BEST electrologists, because they have themselves gone through a trial and error process that led them to WHAT WORKS.

A career in electrology thus comes naturally to them.

They tend to keep up with the state-of-the-art in electrology, in terms of training AND equipment. They are cautious of but open-minded to promising new technologies like laser. They hang out on hair removal chat boards like this and aren’t afraid to speak their minds.

They are also the most driven to help other people because they know what it is like to live with excess unwanted hair.

I am truly fortunate to have met many of these talented electrologists through this community. My hats off to Andrea for putting together such an incredibly valuable resource. I just wish I found this place a few years (and a few thousand dollars) earlier!

Anyways, sorry to take this thread off-topic.

Thus endeth the blabbing.
