Quick question before I have electrolysis done...

So about a month ago, I made a post in the parkside beauty centre thread which unfortunately nobody replied to. I’m not usually one to make another thread asking the same things, but I need to know since I have to book in for treatment starting this weekend if I want to get what I want to have done.
I’m booking in for electrolysis on the penis shaft, and after reading a fair amount about it, I didn’t see it as too big a deal and didn’t really think about the actual treatment itself much. After speaking to the electrolysis on the phone, she was warning me that it will most probably be very painful due to the area being treated. I was wondering if anyone who has had work in this area done before could maybe give me an idea of what to expect? I’m going to put EMLA cream on about an hour before having the work done, so hopefully that should help a bit.
Will it be a treatment which is bareable, or will I want to end up running out of the place before it’s even properly started?! The website says “We use Diathermy, Galvanism and a combination of the two called Blend” if that is of any help to anyone.
This whole thing is really making me confused and I don’t know what to do! I feel stupid having to have hair removed in the area that I am, but it’s something that I definitely want done.
If anyone could provide me with some peace of mind, or any information it would be very much appreciated!!!

Thanks

Hi Charlie,

I am sorry because I read your post but didn’t respond.

I can’t give you much advice since no first hand experience but I do remember other members who have had this area treated. Use the search function and try some keywords and go through the threads that come up. I’m sure you will find some useful information in them.

I imagine you’re just going for a consultation, so I wouldn’t worry too much. It will only be a few minutes - if you can bear it. The electrologist will probably also be extra gentle with settings since it’s the first time you’re having any electrolysis. Everything will be explained thoroughly.

As for the methods, they really only use blend (which is a combination of a galvanic and diathermy) or diathermy. Which will depend on what the electrologist thinks will best suit the removal of hairs in that area.

I think you will be fine, you just need to take the plunge.

You could also treat the penis shaft with electrolysis and do the anal area with a Yag laser. Laser treatment doesn’t treat one hair at a time and that area usually has coarse hair, so it would be over quickly.

Thanks for the replies - I’ve decided that I’m going to book in for a consultation this weekend.

LA Girl - I’m not doing the anal area, just part of the penis shaft. Are you saying that I should get laser done on the shaft since the hair is coarse there? Pretty much all of the hair that I will be getting treated is coarse, so if laser would be a better option, please let me know.
Also, will getting treatment in this area have any bad side effects? For example, will I be able to have sex any time soon after the treatment, or will I have to wait quite a while. Any info that you can provide will be very beneficial.

Thanks!

If you’re mostly treating the shaft, I would stick with electrolysis since it’s precise and can target specific hairs.

You’ll probably have a bit of normal irritation for a few days after the treatment. Obviously, don’t irritate the area more with any type of “activity” until it heals.

Don’t forget to use proper aftercare.

Cool, thanks for the help!

Wish me luck… =]

First off, it is WORTH it! However, I found that it certainly is painful. I get mine done with the Apilus micro flash and it will hurt the most when you start since the hair is still at its strongest. You can find several posts on this forum that address this exact topic (use advanced mode with genitals and pain). I’ve denuded the whole pubic patch and the pain will vary significantly which surprised me. The raphe (the vertical centerline) always hurts; scrotum is generally not so bad; right and left base of shaft is sensitive; shaft itself is very sensitive. The cream helps many patients feel better; for me, it did nothing, so I gave it up after 6 months. So, be prepared. I clench my teeth at times and bite down. My electrologist will occasionally offer me a “well done” after a 120 minute session. Consider aspirin or tylenol or other OTC pain meds. I hear that alcohol does reduce the pain and your electro will know you’ve had a glass. Not recommended though, I hear. For me, the pain is only during treatment; no residual; I feel fine 10 minutes after I leave her office.

Still, tis worth the hassle, time, money, and “discomfort”.

Anti-inflammatory pain relievers like Ibuprofen are recommended for electrolysis, as part of the pain is due to the swelling.

It is best to breath in while the treatment energy is being applied, as that will lessen the pain. Holding one’s breath will increase the pain.

Thanks very much for the replies everyone, I think I will be fine now, and there have been some good tips on here.

I’m booked in for 2.45PM tomorow for a test patch, so I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes

Had my test patch yesterday, wasn’t nearly as painful as I expected! The area had no irritation, so I’ve booked in for a 15 minute appointment tomorow and will have to see how that goes!

I’m very pleased I’m finally getting this done, I left it for so long.

Can anyone tell me if I’m going to get many ingrown hairs due to the area being treated? (penis shaft). When I’ve plucked the area in the past I always ended up with ingrowns, I’m hoping it’s not the same with this!

If the hair is properly treated with enough energy for the right amount of time, it will not come back and you will not be plagued with ingrown hair. Electrolysis is permanent. No more hair equals no more ingrowns. The hair should slide out easily, but some hairs in the beginning are very resistant and may pop out.

Hey Charlie, that’s great news. If you cope well with a 15min appointment, I’m sure you can extend the following ones.

Do remember the aftercare of Tea Tree Oil and Witch Hazel. Not sure how sensitive the area will be to Tea Tree Oil but Witch Hazel should be really calming and will protect against the sweat being produced in that area.

From my experience of Laser on the underarms and bikini line and electrolysis on the underarms (both of which experienced of ingrowns after waxing), I had no ingrown problems. Hopefully it will be the same for you or at least much less.

Make sure the hair slides out without resistance after being zapped. That’s how you know you’re getting good electrolysis and not just some good plucking

So, after having another half hour appointment, I’m finally near a level where I’m happy with the amount of hair that is removed.

I understand though that hair will begin to come back through in a couple of months. My questions are:

  1. Will as much hair come back as there was previously, or will it be a smaller amount?

  2. If the same amount of hair does come back, how many times will it come back before it’s gone for good?

Thanks a lot for all of the help

The hair that grows in after the first clearance represents new hair, so nothing is coming back, it’s the next layer of hair and this proceeds as such until there are no more bothersome hair follicles to treat. There will be some regrowth as you move forward in the process, but how much can not be answered because everybody is different. I would have to ask you or anybody else, if the same amount of hair is present at “x” amount of weeks from the first clearance, how do you know if it is new hair appearing for the first time or is it a weaker version of the hair treated 6-16 weeks ago? Don’t worry about questions that are almost impossible to answer, just go in and get any hair that comes to the surface on a regular basis and you will be fine in about 9-18 months. If you have a severe, challenging case, it may takes 24 months??
