Questions from a scared newbie...

Hi there,

I’ve been reading through posts in this forum for the last several months while trying to finally get up the courage to begin electrolysis. It’s been a great motivator and I’m almost ready to take the plunge…

I’m a 31 year old female with ‘virgin’ hair on my upper and lower lip. It’s naturally black but I’ve been bleaching it since I was 12. The hair has become longer and more dense in the last few years and it really just looks like I have a blond mustache. This has been devastating to my self-esteem and I’m looking forward to doing something about it.

I think I’ve found a good electrologist. I had a consultation and she was very professional and seemed to do everything right. She did a five minute test on my stomach and it went well.

I told her that I wanted to start treatment, focusing on my upper and lower lip first. She uses and Apilus Platinum 27 MHz and wants to do thermolysis. She said that I would have to come in every other week, for thirty minutes, FOR AT LEAST 2 YEARS. Does this seem right to you?

My other concern is what my face will look like between 2 week appointments. I don’t know anyone who has had electrolysis so I have no idea what to expect. What will my perviously ‘virgin’ hair come back like? Will I be walking around with dark stubble for 2+ years? I’m really freaked out about this…

Thanks so much for reading - any feedback would be much appreciated!

She possibly meant that treatments would commence on a fortnightly basis, and that overall treatment could take two years. Usually once a perfect clearance is achieved, the frequency and duration of visits is reduced. Does this sound plausible to you? Everything else sounds great.

She didn’t mention my appointment duration/frequency tapering off during the two years, but I’ll ask her.

Do you have a take on my second question: what to expect during the two year treatment period? Will the hair begin to appear diminished from the start - or will it take time to see results?

Thanks!

You will come in and clear the hair each time. Sometimes, when you start, you can’t treat the upper lip for more than 15-20 mins as it’s a sensitive area. Either way, you’ll clear the area of the hair and will be hairfree for a bit. Then hairs from the next phase of growth will start to come in and you will come in to get rid of them again. You’ll repeat this for about 12-18 months, but over time, there will be a lot less hair growing in and you’ll have to come in less often (i.e. once a month). The hair grows in soft, not coarse. You can shave or clip in between treatments.

Because you have not been waxing, tweezing or lasering the hair you will see an improvement from the very first session. She will treat from the outer edges working inwards towards the centre of the lip, doing a similar amount on each side and keeping it looking natural. Permanent results take longer as LAgirl explained, but immediate better appearance in cases of no major interference, where most of the hair growth is visible, is normal.

Thank you - that helped clarify things for me. Feeling less fearful now.
