Questions as a newbie Laser patient

Hey everyone,

I am a male who has been doing laser hair removal on the chin, beard and upper lip area. So far I have had 2 treatments with the ndYAG laser (very painful) but I have a lot of questions.

I have begun to question the effectiveness of the treatments on the upper lip and chin because I see a lot of shedding 2 weeks after treatment but it mostly grows back within 1.5-2 months of the treatment. The cheeks and neck were only treated once so far, but the hair in those areas is already 25% reduced without regrowth, so I’m optimistic about those areas.

On the other hand, the hair on my upper lip had several spots that were completely gone after the second treatment (around 25%) but it grew back almost entirely within the 2 months.

I am going in again in a week for my third treatment soon, so my question is: should I continue? Is this normal for a person with very thick and dark facial hair? The laser tech said I could come in for however many treatments I want but at this point I’m not convinced that I will lose the constant 5 o clock shadow on my upper lip.

Someone help!

Thanks!

2 treatments isn’t enough to judge the reduction. Additionally, the face has a harder time seeing permanent reduction moreso than other areas, but a lot of it will also depend upon the settings used. When I did laser on my beard, it definitely reduced the shadow (I ended up finishing with electrolysis since I wanted it all gone).

Speaking as an electrologist, who has little knowledge of LHR, I have treated post laser male facial hair several times, and noticed that the hair seems to respond much better on the sides of the face. Most of my work would be on the chin and lip areas where the laser does not appear to be as effective.

Brenton, How many treatments does it take to see actual results for the average male? What settings worked for you?

Thanks!

I haven’t had laser on my face for a few years now, but if I recall, I noticed I had less shadow after about 3-4 treatments. I do recall having much less success on my chin (my upper lip was never really that dense so I can’t really help with that part.)

The laser used for me was a Gentlemax. We started on the alex side: 18J/18mm/3ms, and then went over the face again with the YAG part 22-24J/18mm/10ms. I’m quite pale and those settings are quite aggressive, so those may be too high for you.

And The effects on your face were permanent? Or did you have to go in after a few months for a touch up?

Well I started electrolysis about 6-7 months after my last laser treatment. The effects from the laser seemed permanent from what I recall though I’d imagine there’d be a better estimate of that fact had I waited longer.

Is It Possible Permanent Hair Removal?.. :))

YES
