TLDR: Does the thermolysis method scar black skin when used? Also is it normal for an electrologist to reject a client because of the method she uses?
Back story:
My past electrologist had moved away, so I have been searching for another electrologist that uses the blend method. So I decided to check out a few that had Groupon discounts so that I can see how well they do and then continue to go to them if I saw results. I emailed a few of the companies, and one of them said that she uses the blend method. I spoke to her for a little bit but then realized that I couldn’t go to her that month due to personal reasons.
One month later I went on to Groupon and finally purchased the 2 30-minute session deal for the same company, and emailed her to schedule an appointment. She responded, “please tell me your skin tone, if your are healthy, and what time works best for you”. This was pretty weird - I’ve been asked if I was on medications before, but no electrologist has ever asked what my skin tone was. So I told her I’m black, healthy, and my time is flexible. Then she responds, “We do thermolysis method of electrolysis and unfortunately it’s not good for skin type 6, which is black. You may scar or pigment from the heat, which is delivered in hair folicule.”
The thing is, I’ve had thermolysis done before on my belly - it didn’t scar, BUT every single hair came back. But I’ve had the blend method done on my face which DID scar, but none of the hairs came back. My previous electrologist had told me that I should expect scarring and gave me a treatment to put on the scars. They ended up fading away within a week. I told her this, plus the fact that I’ve spoken to her a month ago and she told me that she did the blend method and asked if her method had changed. There has been no response since.
So I was wondering - is the thermolysis method bad for AA skin/thicker hair? I also searched up the fitzpatrick scale - I’m not a 6, I’m more in between a 4 and 5… Pretty much Sanaa Lathan’s skin color.
