Question about Thermolysis and AA (thick) Hair?

TLDR: Does the thermolysis method scar black skin when used? Also is it normal for an electrologist to reject a client because of the method she uses?

Back story:
My past electrologist had moved away, so I have been searching for another electrologist that uses the blend method. So I decided to check out a few that had Groupon discounts so that I can see how well they do and then continue to go to them if I saw results. I emailed a few of the companies, and one of them said that she uses the blend method. I spoke to her for a little bit but then realized that I couldn’t go to her that month due to personal reasons.

One month later I went on to Groupon and finally purchased the 2 30-minute session deal for the same company, and emailed her to schedule an appointment. She responded, “please tell me your skin tone, if your are healthy, and what time works best for you”. This was pretty weird - I’ve been asked if I was on medications before, but no electrologist has ever asked what my skin tone was. So I told her I’m black, healthy, and my time is flexible. Then she responds, “We do thermolysis method of electrolysis and unfortunately it’s not good for skin type 6, which is black. You may scar or pigment from the heat, which is delivered in hair folicule.”

The thing is, I’ve had thermolysis done before on my belly - it didn’t scar, BUT every single hair came back. But I’ve had the blend method done on my face which DID scar, but none of the hairs came back. My previous electrologist had told me that I should expect scarring and gave me a treatment to put on the scars. They ended up fading away within a week. I told her this, plus the fact that I’ve spoken to her a month ago and she told me that she did the blend method and asked if her method had changed. There has been no response since.

So I was wondering - is the thermolysis method bad for AA skin/thicker hair? I also searched up the fitzpatrick scale - I’m not a 6, I’m more in between a 4 and 5… Pretty much Sanaa Lathan’s skin color.

Thermolysis is safe on all skin types in hands of experienced practitioner. There is higher risk or hyper-pigmentation in dark skin tones but there is no higher risk for permanent scarring. Hyper-pigmentation resolves in about a year after electrolysis is finished.

When you say blend scarred you, do you still have permanent scars years after doing blend or it was temporary?

I agree with you that thermolysis yields poorer results per treatment compared to Blend. I speak from 3+ years of experience with having thermolysis done with poor kill rates and just endlessly thinning hair that kept growing back. Thousands of dollars down the drain. Blend is slow as heck but KILLS those hairs in less clearances.

Yup! One electrologist I went to did the thermolysis method on my belly and every single hair came back - they’re thinner, but still. My previous electrologist did the blend method on a small patch on my belly, and I’ve had a small kinda-empty area (two hairs grew back) ever since. Ugh I miss her.

And yes blend scarred me, but it wasn’t permanent at all. It went away within a week, and I used aloe vera to moisturize the spots.

PS - I STILL haven’t gotten a response from the person (and she was responding back very promptly when I spoke to her). I think that she just doesn’t want to give me any service… I’m now in the process of trying to get a refund.

If you got “scarred” only for a week, then it was NOT a scar at all! Scarring is permanent. What you experienced is scabbing and wound healing process which is normal after any type of electrolysis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFKcx7XQDTc

Watch this video and then find video # 1 and learn about what normal wound healing is after electrolysis.

I am in total agreement with fenix.

OMG - no! Ridiculous! An uneducated answer. Not true.

Unbelievable to me that there are electrologists that say such untruths. How is that I treat people of color - all shades and in between and there is no danger in doing so. I use THERMOLYSIS and it is permanent. They are not scarred. Where was she trained?! Maybe she lacks confidence?

Disturbing. I feel sad for you. You can be helped and you have been advised badly. Please search for a highly skilled electrologist who embraces every skin color and who is very comfortable removing hair with any modality on any skin color, who is able to destroy hair of any thickness.

Normal skin side effects do occur and they are temporary. Clients need to understand the healing skin and not call normal skin side effects scars. They are not scars unless they persist for many months - 12 months and beyond. We are destroying tissue. Watch Michael Bono’s series on YouTube about the healing skin (Electrology Now).
Thanks.
