Please help me :(

Hi all ,

I am a 23 years old male who had 3 laser hair removal treatments (IPL) on my upper cheeks. Last treatment was a year ago and the laser induced more hair fine (peach fuzz but very long) with dark ones here and there. I did not have this before I don’t know why on earth I tried this and I feel miserable for wasting my money and missing up my face. Now I have enlarged pores (looks like pitting and scars) with hair every where on my face.

What should I do ? I am type IV skin with brown hair on my upper cheeks and I shave every day I hate the stubbly feeling which reaches my eye sockets.

Please advise me … Is it possible that I resolve this problem or i will stay like this forever or maybe it will get worse.

I sooooooo regret having laser on my face .

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about this. It is a possible consequence of doing laser/ipl in areas that have hair that is too fine to be treated or are sensitive to hormones.

I’m not sure why/how it caused enlarged pores.

Electrolysis is your best option now. My husband naturally has hair like this on his upper cheeks and we will be doing electrolysis here eventually.

You can read through the threads in the electrolysis section to help you get an idea. There is one active right now “Electrolysis on the cheeks for women” - it’s no different from the process you will go through.

Here is another:

Thank you stoppit&tidyup I appreciate your reply. I will follow the thread you provided.

I study in the UK and this is my final year and ill finish and go back home and where I am from they have one centre for electrolysis which I called today and they don’t treat men !

So I am not sure if 9 months or so will resolve my problem and I will be hair free there or at least reduce the number of hair in that area which will reduce the number of times i shave a week.

In the meantime would you recommend anything else other than shaving to get rid of the hair there temporarily. I know many men who use threading in their upper cheeks but I am worried about inducing more hair or scarring my face but I am not sure about this.

IPL may have had an impact, but a lot of that hair may have appeared regardless due to your age.

You need electrolysis, not laser or IPL, if you want that hair removed for good.

If you find a good electrologist and can put in the time, you can make good progress in 9months. You won’t be finished but you should be able to reduce the hairs. For quicker results, I would suggest aiming to get the hair cleared asap, so frequent treatments, for as long as possible, until the area is looking clear. Then you just need to go as and when to maintain this clear appearance. Providing the electrologist is skilled and doesn’t need to treat an individual follicle multiple times to destroy it, you should make progress.

Where in the UK are you based?

Any root removal, such as threading can make it worse by making the finer hairs stronger and thicker. Unless it is your only option, I would avoid it.

I am sure that IPL caused this as I noticed more hair coming back after the third treatment straight away.

Another thing which concern me most is scarring my face with electrolysis as I have a very sensitive skin. I had few burns after IPL which took about 4 months to go away. I also experienced pumps which looked like acne(lots of them). I heard electrolysis is aggressive specially in this area and can cause pitting in this area.

I live in Birmingham but I am willing to travel if I find a better electrologist outside Birmingham. Do you know of any good electrologists ?

Would you say I will notice more than 70% reduction in 9 months ?

It all depends on finding the right electrolysis. Properly performed, good electrolysis should never cause permanent effects such as pitting.

thank you … but would you recommend an experienced electrologist that you know ? I am willing to travel.

I am also considering laser again (Nd yag) but I am not sure if it’s the right decision as the hair texture has changed and not how it used to be .

Nd:Yag is only suitable for very coarse hairs.

I don’t know any in the B’ham area. It may be worth opening a thread in the electrolysis section. My own was in London and would be far for weekly appointments. I don’t know if you would be able to get it all cleared in one sitting here, it is unlikely.

If you’re getting full clearances with electrolysis at each treatment, you can go once a month (i.e. possible to travel for electrolysis).
