Please help me with the nape of my neck.

Hi – I want to laser the nape of my neck, but don’t know how I should “design” it. As you can see from the photo, my natural hairline extends down the sides in “peaks,” in addition to the neck hair already there. Should I laser the hairline hair too and maybe do like a straight line across? I don’t know what the “standard” is for a female neck; I just know I don’t have it. I am embarrassed to wair my hair up; the only time I do is if I’m wearing a turtleneck and scarf, LOL.

Thanks.

You should be very careful to only treat those “peaks” if you’re going to go through with this as that’s the only coarse hair you have. If you don’t avoid touching the hairs around those areas, you risk induced growth in addition to lack of results there.

If I were you, I would get this done with electrolysis where precision is easy and they can go slowly until you achieve the desired look.

Otherwise, I would try shaving the area and experimenting before you commit to laser. Once you figure out what you like, make sure to draw the areas you want treated with a white pencil.

Laser won’t give you tons of control over the shape, it’s kind of clunky. Also, many of the hairs I see are too fine for laser (especially the lower/middle of the neck), and those can be stimulated by laser instead and become worse. Just be aware that unless hair is coarse (like underarm hair), it is at risk for laser-induced hair growth.

Regarding shape: I think slight peaks are way prettier than a straight line (I’ve never seen anyone with a straight line before). But I also think such detailed shaping needs to be done with electrolysis. Just my opinion, but on this particular area, I think laser might be a mistake.

Good suggestions both – thank you. I definitely don’t want to risk stimulating the fine hairs (they’re fine, but dark, so they are still very noticeable, grrrrrrrrrr). My sister knows a good electrologist, I’ll definitely consult with her.

Oh yeah, I agree, I think slight peaks are pretty too…I just think my peaks are too long and weird looking.

I’ve previously used Lightsheer Diode and Candela Gentlelase on lower arms, upper lip, underarms, lower legs, toes, and bikini, with excellent results – arm hairs and upper lip did not get stimulated even though they were fine and not coarse; but you’re right, I still wouldn’t risk it with the neck.

You may not get any stimulation at all, of course. It’s just an increased risk.

Glad to hear you had good results on your arms. I’m getting laser there very soon as well.

Just chiming in to agree that peaks are way prettier than straight lines. Not that I usually notice those things early on.

I honestly do not see a thing wrong with it, but I understand how it feels and why’d want to get rid of those fine hairs on the nape of your neck, even thought they do not seem that visible to others.

I actually think, from the pic, your neck (including the hair!) looks really pretty the way it is.

Obviously I know im not going to sway your opinion - just want to chime in to say I dont think your hair looks weird or bad in any way.

Also, go for the peaks if you are going to go for it!

Aw, thanks.

We all have our stupid insecurities, don’t we?

It would be great if you could post your laser results in our Success Stories sticky thread. It would help others!

I recommend having your hair stylist trim/shave the hair and see how you like it before doing anything permanent. If you like what the stylist has done, then start treatments while there is still a guide for the laser tech or electrologist to follow. A skilled laser tech has the necessary accessories available to design any shape.
