Pitted pinhead scarring hyperpigmentation

Hi,

I have some PCOS symptoms like unwanted hair growth. Decided to try electrolysis for my upper lip and have had three sessions starting October 12th 2022 and the last one was November 2nd. The electrologist ( REDACTED BY MODERATOR) recommended I keep the scabs dry and only apply aloe. I was nervous to do the third and most recent session because I had a lot of hyperpigmentation and scabbing. But, she said it looked fine… so I kept going. The scarring looked like a shadow thought it was mostly hyperpigmentation. Then, it was like a bunch of small pinhead scars. Now it’s like a section on the left side of my upper lip are just caved in. I can see like individual pinhead marks but clustered in one sunken in crater. After the third session she sold me this tea tree smelling toner her friend in New York makes along with some cream she calls a healing cream that her friend also makes. The first photo is after my initial session. The second photo is after my second session. The third photo is the pitting. I also added photos of my progress and our text messages. I’m looking for advice/support. Feeling kinda low right now. Went to a derm and they said I could scar that it’s hard to say for sure. What do you think? Thank you for reading.

Hello madame_blavatsky,
I’m sure someone will reply soon, in the meantime however I’ve had to remove the name and identification of the electrologist who treated you from the post. We have rules about not identifying practioners as this sometimes results in legal problems for the board. Sorry about that.

I think that weekly sessions on the upper lip are too frequent if she’s treating the exact same areas each week. I prefer to thin the area and leave a two week gap between treatments.

You can expect hyperpigmentation, scabbing and uneven skin (pitted dots) as a temporary reaction, but the issue in this area is when points of scabbing and uneven skin join together. Since you’re consulting a dermatologist, I’d recommend you continue following their advice.

I’m not sure that this is guaranteed to scar, but you’ll see improvement over time either way.

The toner and cream your electrologist is selling is probably worthless. You’re just handing her free money. For that reason alone, I would find another electrologist.

I understand, no worries!

Yeah, she had really good reviews. She revealed the products to me out of nowhere after first telling me to keep it dry and only put aloe gel.

So just to reiterate, your opinion is that these symptoms I’m experiencing such as the hyperpigmentation and pitting, are both common and normal reactions? And that they are like not permanent? @Thermo

Also, the derm didn’t really recommend anything for me to do other than keep it out of the sun.

I dont think they are permanent. They are early in th process of resolving.
That said, the very first photo you showed, is the exact reason I think Thermo is right about that healing cream. Those white pustules are a clear sign of contamination of the follicle immediately after treatment and the “healing cream” is a likely cause. There is literally nothing that you can put on your skin to help in healing. At most cool water for the first 24 hours is usually best. I often will use a little refridgerated aloe right after a treatment on a client and this helps to cool and sooth the skin, but no heavy oild creams or concoctions, they have far more potential to cause harm than good.

I started using the so called healing cream after the third session! I think I got contamination from just my dog maybe? I don’t know. I’m from Miami. Very humid. Any other possible reasons I got those postules?

touching the skin a lot right after treatment can also do this. Sometimes a electrolysis consumer will touch the area repeatedly because it feels a little strange or warm.We always have a little dirt and oils and other potential contaminants on our fingertips and i have seen it ( on the chin primarily) where a client who watched youtube while absentmindedly touching their chin woke up the next day with similar pustules.Either way the answer is the same, gently wash te area and wipe the pustules away, and keep the area contaminat free from that point. No heavy soaps or perfumes.
Healing takes some time. I dont have serious concerns for your outcome.

I deeply appreciate the time and effort you took to moderate and respond to my post. I’m sure you see posts like this often on here so, thank you for the words and assuaging my fears. @Iluv2zap @Thermo
