Pcos and electrolysis

Hi everyone I’m new to this group. I have had electrolysis on and off for about a year or so. I haven’t stuck to a schedule so the only results I have seen is the hair growing back slower after treatment. Usually I have to pluck every day or every other day but after I have electrolysis, I don’t have to pluck for about two or three days. But once I stop going or sticking to a schedule my hair returns back to normal. I am currently having electrolysis treatment again this is my second time having it with a new person. The only thing about Washington state is Electrolygists don’t have to be trained or licensed there are no regulations so it’s hard for me to find a person who actually knows what they’re doing. Therefore I want to get Laser Hair Removal I have heard a lot of success stories with that but here is my review of electrolysis. I have a high pain tolerance so it doesn’t really hurt me at all it just feels like a hot sensation. Over here an hour is $60 and some places is $150. So I have been going for an hour once a week and the person has cleared my chin and my neck if I go for two hours I might get my whole face cleared but I’m going to post a before and after picture of electrolysis. Mind you this is a day after and the hair is already starting to grow back a few days after electrolysis . It also depends on how fast your electrolysis is. I feel like for an hour of mine got a lot done. I am still going to continue electrolysis before i make my decision on laser hair removal. I will keep you all updated.

hello Pcosgall,

there doesnt seem to be a question in your post, but I still would have a lot to say about what you have written anyway.

In my practice , I would say up to 35% of my clientele have some form of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrom ( PCOS). Electrolysis has never failed to remove the problem hair, but laser, I see mixed results, and honestly, poor results are more frequent than good ones. I’ve maybe seen maybe one result that I thought looked pretty good, until a few months later when the person had stopped and I was removing 5 times as much hair as I was before.A year later, she is still a client ( she comes infrequently) .
Regarding plucking, dont do that. Shaving, no problem, it only cuts the hair at the surface ( clipping dead keratin) and does not affect the follicle itself, plucking however increass blood flow to the follicle, damages the dermal paillae ( causing it to grow back with more blood feeding capillaries) and leads to ingrown hairs and also hairs that have been stimulated by…plucking. I’ve heard varying accounts as to how long it takes a follicle to grow another hair , but the median is that 12-16 weeks is the minimum time a plucked hair will take to regenerate a hair, meaning we are not able to address that hair with electrolysis for that period.

If you want to make a facial hair problem worse, pluck it. Your face will show you how bad it can be ( and it seems to be doing exactly that) As long as you are plucking, you will be delaying your progress with electrolysis and it will become a never ending process. Electrolysis works . Give it a chance. And throw away the damn tweezers !

( this message brought to you by the Coalition to Outlaw Tweezers trade mark reg.)

My honest heatfelt advice, is to not proceed with laser. Electrolysis can do a muchbetter an d more thorough job of it. Neither can help you if you insist on tweezing.

Hi Pcosgall,

I’m 45 and have had PCOS since I was a teen. My facial hair did not get bad until my mid 30’s, about the time I no longer needed oral birth control.

This suggestion is from my personal experience only.

-Quit plucking, you will only make it worse.
-See your electrologist REGULARLY, more often if you can’t put down the tweezers.
-Patience, hard, very hard, but patience.
-See your medical provider and inquire if there is anything that they can do about your hormone levels. While electrolysis will help immensely, unless your hormone levels get regulated there is a chance that some hairs will transition over to the coarse dark ones.

While my hair growth is confined to my chin and neck, it was very dense. Before dropping the tweezers I was spending 90 minutes EVERY day plucking. I’ve been seeing my electrologist for 40-60 minutes about every 10 days for 10 months and there is a MAJOR improvement, we are down to about 100 stragglers that don’t want to give up.

Hope this helps you to decide a path.
