NYC cosmetology schools that do it cheaply?

Hey,

I figure that now would be a good time to start my electrolysis treatment for my breasts. I did a search, but it was miserable (if you put in nyc electrologists/electrolysis, you’ll get repeat threads that have nothing to do with nyc).

I remember reading how cosmetology schools give discounts for customers so that graduating students can gain practice. I’m wondering if anyone has ever done this in NYC or which schools they can recommend?

Also, how long would it take on average for full clearance for 75 hairs? I know it depends on the individual, but since a lot of electrologists base their rates on time, I’m wondering if 15 minutes is more than enough.

What do you want, speed, or low price?

What you should be looking for is good work.

I will let Arlene tell you about NYC schools, as she is closer to the action.

Low price, but I know that a lot of electrologists base their prices on time (like $60 dollars for 30 minutes and so on and so forth) so I’m trying to estimate how much time it’d take on average.

If it takes 15 minutes, then I’d book that amount of time… Or if it takes 10 minutes, then I’d try to negotiate for a discount.

While I’d LOVE to pay for good work for an experienced electrologist, I simply don’t have the means especially if I’m going to be doing this for once a month for a year to get complete, full clearance (this is what it seems like). If I can get someone who is good/decent that gives me results, I’ll take it.

Sincerely, I would just go to Arlene and skip the school. For the amount of hair you have, she is quite capable of getting you a first clearance in under an hour, even if she uses the blend method. She has an Apilus Platinum. I’m thinking her prices are very good by New York City standards, at least that is my perception. I would pay for experience and comfort. I think you would be surprised at the money and effort you would end up putting into this effort all told.

I would see Arlene as suggested, but if you still really want to go to a school to have the work done, I would try the Berkowits School in Queens.

In my experience with breast hair, your longest appointment would be the first one. The second appointment, which should be done in 3 to 6 weeks, would be shorter, and from there on, you would be going in once every 6 to 12 weeks.

Even at a slow rate of work, a fully functioning professional would spend only half an hour to an hour on your first clearance, and all subsequent work would be 15 to 30 minutes.

In the real world, this would mean that a professional could be finished with this treatment area in 7 treatments, spread out over 12 months. You would pay about $50 for the first treatment, but no more than $100, and the 6 other treatments would cost you between $30 to $60, and be spaced out roughly every two months. This would work out to as much as $100 for the first treatment, but $180 - $360 total for the balance of the year, paid once every two months in installments.

Now, let’s look at the professional side of this equation. When I have done breast work, typically, after the second treatment, there is not more than 15 minutes worth of work, so we are down to what ever the mandatory minimum treatment time costs. Although some businesses charge more for shorter appointments, most just charge a minimum like $20, so we must recalculate this to $50 to $100 for the first treatment, and 6 treatments paid the balance of the year with an average cost of $20, for a total of 120 paid out in 6 installments over the balance of the year. That means that for $220 or less, you could spend the rest of your life with no breast hair. If she uses thermolysis for the entire job, then all 7 treatments could average about $20, and in that case the entire job would be $140 paid out in 12 months, and if the breast hair surrenders early, even less money, as you don’t even require treatment every 8 weeks. There is a possibility on this body part that you would be done in 5 treatments spread out over the year. In that case, recalculate to $100 paid in 12 months.

I think many women spend more on their manicures over the course of the year.

In short, removing breast hair with permanent results is not a high hill to climb. It really is not costly, but it can be if you don’t go to a professional electrologist on par with someone like Arlene. Arlene is located in Queens, but there are many, many electrologists located in New York City as well that could serve you well.

A good electrologist using thermolysis will remove 5-10 hairs per minute on average. I would recommend blend for breasts since hairs tend to be deeper around the nipple area. I did electrolysis everywhere else, but this area needed blend to work well and fast. Of course, a good electrologist will figure this out themselves.

The hairs you’re talking about can definitely be easily cleared in one treatment to start, in about 10-20 mins. On average, cost is around $60-70/hr for electrolysis around the country. NYC can be a bit more expensive. So your estimate is probably a bit high.

I would also advise to check out Arlene Batz in Queens to start and try a few other electrologists and compare things. Get some sample treatments.

Overall, you’ll need treatments over the course of 12 months or so, but you’ll likely start with one treatment of 20 mins every 3-4 weeks and then go down to one treatment of 10 mins every month. It won’t be that expensive overall at all.

Wow, thanks for the info everyone! I’m going to call Arlene and set up an appointment with her. Hopefully, I can work something out since from the estimates you’ve given me, I think I might be able to go for the expert treatment (especially if it works out being cheaper in the future).

This is such a great board.

You are on your way, lala. We are all glad to help and you will be in good shape by this time next year.
