Numbness-normal?

I did my first electrolysis today-she type she used was Blend Electrolysis also known as Thermolysis/Galvanic. She started on my right cheek and jawline area. 10 minutes into working consistently in that area I started feeling numbness on my right cheek and around the right side of my upper and lower mouth.

When I told her I was feeling numbness she stopped because she said that was an abnormal reaction. It’s been 6 hours and the numbness on my cheek has went away but the numbness around my mouth is still kind of there. Is that normal?

Unusual, but not abnormal. By definition numbness is part of the inflammatory response. This will resolve with no problems. I would not be put off on electrolysis because your subsequent treatments will probably be just fine.

Hi Bono,

Based on your knowledge and expertise, do you know how long it might take to subside?

Emmy it’s very hard to determine this wwithout extensive knowledge of the tretment performed.
Usually such numbness is the result of inflamation and swelling. IT’s not abnormal , and can happen. Without inflammation, healing of the skin cannot occur. When the swelling and inflammation subside, so will the numbness . It’s unusual for such numbness however to remain much past a few days to maybe perhaps a week, and if this does not occur then that would be good reaason to re-assess the area.
It’s normal to be a little apprehensive about every little treatment concern when you are beginning your electrolysis journey. It will all be alright, I assure you. Try not to get “freaked out” over it and know that as your experience with electrolysis progresses, you’ll come to see that reactions tend to lessen over time, and resolve without problem or interferance. Big Breaths sister, it’s all going to be okay.

Hello,

Thanks for your response. An update-the numbness was gone within 24 hours of getting the treatment. The treatment is described below. Honestly, I’m not the one who’s nervous, the esthetician is. I spent $75 USD for a 10 minute treatment and the rest of the 20 minutes was her freaking out.

I want to understand whether or not her concern is valid, whether the response is normal and if not, maybe her technique is wrong. I’m a very healthy person who’s had skin treatments before and I’ve never had adverse reactions to anything or illness of any kind.

I’m sorry to report that, frankly, the majority of electrologists have little to no training in biology and especially the intricacies of human biology.

While many like the “white coat” symbolism, it does not denote the person is a doctor … or a health professional either. At the moment the associations are promoting “allied health” as the definition of electrology. I strongly disagree with that assertion. We neither DIAGNOSE nor treat medical conditions: the definition of an “allied health professional.” We are not nurses, physical therapists or any such practitioner.

In most jurisdictions, only a High School diploma is required. Furthermore, the electrology schools are very limited in their scope and mostly focus on performing the treatment itself. I’m not surprised that your therapist was freaking-out … she had no understanding of what was happening and was therefore unable to give you the right answers. Oh, I’m happy this resolved … I knew it would.

Swelling puts pressure on the nerves and some numbness results. My guess is that you will never experience this again. Carry on!
