not sure if i should trust my new technician...

hi, 23 year old man here.

so i got a complimentary laser hair removal session at a plastic surgery clinic. I made an apt for my chest, but wasn’t planning on committing to this place as they use a Lightsheer Duet, I believe. (are Lightsheer Diode and Duet different?) and there are a lot of good deals on places with better machines during the month of June…

anyhow, there are no reviews re: their laser services online, so i dont know what other people’s experiences at this place are. i’ve had a few laser hair removal sessions years ago, I think I had 3 with a coolglide yag, and then 3 on Cynosure Elite. this was all on stomach and chest. i don’t know what settings were used, but i know they weren’t very high with the cyonosure, i made them turn it down because i couldn’t take the pain…

anyways, after a couple years or however long its been, all of the hair is back again. i have thick coarse dark hair, and pale skin. i’m half italian, but i’ve always been fair skinned with dark hair.

so anyways, i asked beforehand if it would be possible to add stomach and shoulders to my complimentary session, she says that would be fine if we have time.
she looked at my and said she would do my stomach, chest, shoulders, and back for 250$ per treatment! very cheap! i couldn’t believe it!

so we started on my chest, and it felt as it always has, quite painful in spots, but i was trying to bare it. she didn’t numb me, she said that she would’ve but we didnt have time, since i wanted to treat so many areas.

i was clearly in pain. she asked me if i’d like to just finish the chest and come in another day for the rest with some numbing cream on, I thought about it, and said sure. i’m a baby when it comes to pain, i guess.

there was a pungent burnt hair smell, more than I’m used to, some of the other nurses/techs were commenting on it, but i found it reassuring because it seemed to be killing the hairs…
but anyways, once my chest was finished and i was on my way out, i asked my tech what settings they used. but she refused to tell me. i didn’t think she was using poor settings on me, they seemed to be working, but she said it was against their policy to tell. it’s her own private information.

what do you think? does it sound sketchy? my chest looks pretty wrecked right now. lots of edema, redness, etc. i saw that hairs were falling out as she was treating me…
i’d just like this place to work because the price shes giving me is phenomenal… now, if only it didnt hurt so damn much :frowning:

It sux, but sometimes it needs to hurt to get great results. If the edema and redness lasts longer than 3 days and a couple days later scabs start to appear, the energy is too high. If your skin looks fine after a week (other than shedding), stick with it. The strong burnt hair smell is normal.

For pain: apply emla or maxaline at least 45 min (60min is recommended for the full effect of numbing) before appointment. Do not use on full chest and abs due to toxic concerns, but pick your worst areas for pain, like the sides or lower abs. Make sure to cover the thickly applied cream with saran wrap and tape it down (so it doesn’t shift). This is the only way to reduce the pain other than turning it down and losing out on the best results.

Some places do have a policy in place to not give out settings. This can be because they don’t want the client to leave with the settings and go somewhere cheaper that has the same equipment. Plus it’s also not 100% safe to use the same settings on another similar laser because who know’s which laser has been calibrated properly and when or if at all! The energy output may slightly different.

I didn’t read all of this :stuck_out_tongue: but how strong was the burnt smell? I have had that smell when some stubborn hairs were killed- it was my stomach and I had that also with my bikini… I agree with CareBearhair… to see how the area is two days after.

Also- IMO don’t be doing things that you make you so nervous
