Hi Everyone, I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind. I am getting hair removed from my chin and sides of face. I know you guys like details but I really just had some basic questions. I can post details about the method she is using when I talk to her more. I know it is electrical current, and she pulses it for 2 very quick seconds. This might sound funny but I haven’t asked her much because I don’t want to lose any time on the clock (she is busy)!
Okay so my questions. First being: what do you mean when you talk about a “clearance”?
and secondly: how much hair really needs to be present to be able to grab onto? The reason why I ask is because I have been shaving the area for a while, and it is literally painful for me to walk around with it grown out.
I appreciate it, everyone on here seems really helpful and knowledgeable.
A clearance is when an area has been cleared of all the hair. I think there can be confusion on this when the hair is so dense that it can’t all be cleared in one appointment. For those dense areas, I suggest that we choose one area and always clear that first before going on to other areas. That way, if for any reason treatments are interrupted, that one area might be done or nearly done.
We need a little length on the hair to grasp…1/8th of an inch is usually plenty. Do you shave daily? Do you feel a stubble when you shave?
I think I understand what a clearance is. I was under the impression that it was better to get it all off in one appointment, but my electrologist thinks that that is bad news for your skin. She would rather go a little at a time. I will talk to her more about it.
Yes I do shave every day, and yes, i feel a stubble. To be clear, I just mean it is emotionally hard to deal with, not pain from a razor.
Your electrologist has to work within her comfort level with the equipment she has chosen. I will tell you that I do first, full clearances in one session and go at it for anywhere from under an hour to 3-5 hours on facial areas with no problems. You’ve got to be comfortable with this and you need proper tools, techniques, modalities to do this well. It is perfectly okay as well, to take the approach of going in once a week for shorter appoinments until a first, full clearance is obtained. Some modalities and epilators require you do this to protect the skin.
Thanks guys. Sorry dfahey, not trying to confuse anyone. I have just seen people on here talking about marathon sessions and whatnot, but that is not what my electrologist believes in. I’m not sure what is best, to be honest. I am doing once per week currently.
Dfahey, your answer about the equipment and working slowly toward a full first clearance made sense, I think that is the situation I am in.
I am fine with taking it slow…The only thing is that I am having to grow out the hairs for about 2 days each week for her to only remove a small amount (30 min appointment). I can handle it, it just doesn’t seem ideal to me.
The multiple appointments in a week could work if she worked on different areas of my face on the different appointments due to her concern about working too extensively in one area. I think that is what AMH meant.
I’m going to ask her what machine she uses and see what you guys think.
You can do long and frequent sessions. BUT you shouldn’t be retreating any one areas or spot that hasn’t completely healed yet from previous treatments. Marathon sesions are possible, but there is a difference between treating a male back and a woman’s upper lip. The surface area is a lot smaller on the upper lip, so you’d probably have to wait longer between treatments.
If you don’t have this problem (i.e. the surface area is big enough that you can treat NEW areas without touching areas that haven’t healed yet), there is no reason not to have longer or more frequent treatments. Do find out the method and tell us how many hairs you think she removes per minute. It doesn’t hurt to test out several electrologists. We always recommend tht. You can never know who is best unless you try a few.
