NEW to Electrology

Hi

Getting access to this forum took almost 2 weeks … finally some admin granted access.

Anyway, I have used electrolysis and laser for hair removal … I obviously know the difference on the outcomes… permanent versus temporary.

Now I want to become a professional electrologist …
I live in Bay area california currently working full time …
I need help in getting starting … good affordable school in bay area? I can study/learn after 6 weekdays and weeksends? How much tuition am I looking and other equipment costs, how long is the training? what tests do i need to take to get licensed and start practicing…

I apprecite your replies…

There were, at one time, many electrology schools in California … including a couple good ones in the bay area (San Francisco). Now, there are only two schools: one in the Orange County area and one in Monterey. The Monterey school is fine … and closer to you. Called: Monterey Bay Institute of Electrology.

“Affordable? Learn in 6 weekdays?” Better talk to Randa at the Monterey school. California requires 600 hours of electrology school.

Sorry, I meant I have time only week nights or weekends for study/practicals … and I was wondering if I can complete the program and get a license in about 3 months…

By affordable I mean I have $2000 saved for learning this skill…

Thx for the info … I will talk to the Monterey contact thx

Well, remember 600 actual hours in school. Were you to do evenings … say, 3-hours per 5-days, that would be 60-hours per month. So, at that rate, 10-months. Furthermore, fees for school are monumental (no other way to express it). You can do the math all sorts of ways … that is, 5 days per week at 8-hours … you know, like that?

Electrologists are getting as RARE as “hen’s teeth” and the diminishing number of schools and educational offerings (that lead to a license) are even more rare. In spite of the BIG and growing public demand for electrolysis … our numbers are not increasing fast enough to satiate the demand.

BTW … counting HOURS IN THE SCHOOL is utter nonsense. Other countries (socialist ones) don’t do that and are FAR more “free enterprise” then we are (yes, socialist countries). So, what’s with all the State regulation? Who is being served? Who is being “protected?”

tempanonymo,

I had held off replying to this one because I’m not sure I’m 100% up on my knowledge of california regulations and actually, Michel would know them better. However as I Understand it california is a licensed state which requires as michael said a 600 hour course, I also believe you have to write a state exam, which may tie in to the CPE certification somehow. I know I’ve seen information on it on the web but it was some time ago and I dont know where to look for it now.

Good electrolysis schools are generally few and far between. And generally expensive.

What you may want to consider doing though before you think about committing large amounts of money and time to electrolysis schools , is buying an old professional epilator, getting a couple books, and trying to learn all you can yourself first. It would let you also decide if it’s the kind of work you want to do.

I was lucky because I live in a country without licensing, and was able to do a distance learning program through Swansons Institute of Electrolysis in Alberta then do the practical with my boss at Time For You Electrolysis. Most schools around here run year long programs in “medical Esthetics” which include electrolysis and laser, and the tuition I think is about $12000 now , and run those programs during the daytime working hours, and I expect the few schools still operating in california would do the same.Dectro still runs a school in california, but I would expect their tuition would be a great deal more than your budget.

Thx mike and iluvz for your replies … I believe the monterey school is closed weekends tried calling and looked at their website, thats bad cause I am not sure how I can attend weekdays in the evenings cause Monterey is at least 2 hours drive for me …
Is there a way for school to count my praticals if I buy a epilator and show them progress … just trying to get this license cause I knew the demand was higher cause none of the electrologist in bay area had any time slots available for next 3-4 months and also younger generation is getting hairer and my prediction is demand will grow and thx mike for confirming the demand and shortage of skills …
Laser is definitely not the answer for permanent results … I have tried both of these for 12 years (various machines in laser … duration, power levels everything) and know the outcomes. Anyway, I have to figure out a way to get that license and get going …

I will keep you posted … thx again …

By the way … I am a male 30 yrs old … what you think about clients avoiding me at least intially and do you guys know how to go about the gender issue … cause we still live in a sexist society … haha

Thx
