Hello everyone … I am a newbie electrologist and I welcome any advice anyone can offer about treating men who want the hair removed from their genitals since I am getting a few requests for that lately and I want to do a good job. Thank you in advance. Jen
I don’t have enough time to even go into this right now, so I will say start by reading the Mature Section of this forum, and I will get back to you when I have time.
In the meantime, I hope others here can help you out.
Hi Jenbred,
You can view this page, Dr. Gil Vernet is a urologist specializing in surgeries of urethroplasty. He is who performs Electrolysis prior to surgery in the scrotal skin.
I have some experience in these cases. It is not difficult to deal with this area because the skin is very thin and the follicles are transparent through.
Hi Jen,
If the genital hair removal is for gender reassignment (GR), then contact the physician and they will send you instuctions as to where to clear the area as the surgeons want some hair in the area to cover the surgical scars.
If GR is not an issue, then proceed the way you would to clear any other area. Find your starting point and go back to your starting point every appointment to track progress.
I have read, in some textbooks, that the hairs in this region tend to be shallow BUT I rarely see shallow hairs in this region.
So, check the depth of hairs as you remove them and use that as your guide to insert.
Scrotum: you will need to pull the skin away from the testicals and this should be simple enough since the skin does tends to be loose.
Shaft: it is best if this is flacid so that there is no pressure/resistance when moving it to get to a hair.
In terms of modality and probe type, go with what you know best.
If you want to explore other modalities then what you are comfortable with, great, but do it on your own leg and compare.
The genital and the breast region are two areas that I will sometimes administer blend.
If you have seen completion of electrolysis in about a year in other areas, do not expect such fast completion in the genital region. It is very difficult to work fast in this area as hairs grow in all directions and skin needs to be pulled in all directions. The scrotal skin has little elasticity and this skin needs to be pulled taut and away from the testicals.
It appears that every follicle in the region is going to produce a hair so be patient and ask your clients to be patient.
Since so few electrologists have developed expertise in genital hair removal and hardly anyone feels comfortable working in the region, I will be happy to receive your phone calls and quide you through your journey. (I might not be able to take your call right away but I promise to get back to you within 24 hours)
All the best,
That’s all great advice. Some other things I would like to add would be:
Make sure you have the client come close to you so as to protect your back and neck. They must position themself for your comfort as best as they can. There are some very challenging insertions to make. Not only do you need strength in your stretching and pressing hand, but you need to insert well with the other hand.
If you have a poor vision and lighting setup, this affects proper ergonomics. Better go purchase some Aleve or Advil because you will need it afterwards.
Give the client a towel (or they can do it without) and engage them in helping with the stretching part. THey like helping. This takes some of the pressure off your hands so you can last longer.
The client may need anesthetic guidance. My clients report that EMLA helps as long as it is left on for 1.5 - 2 hours. They use plastic wrap to occlude the cream and then I peel back as much wrap as needed to work on a “hair neighborhood”. I keep pulling back the wrap as I go to another area. Usually, they also take a pain medication to supplement the EMLA. I apply nothing to them. I do not offer medication. My license states that I cannot assist with the numbing process. It is up to the client to consult with their primary care physician or pharmacist regarding anesthesia.
I use whatever method gets the hair off fast. My preference is for using the faster forms of thermolysis on the Apilus Platinum called Synchro and PicoFlash. Before that, I used MicroFlash. Blend is very good, but these thermolysis methods work just as well and my clients seem to prefer the quicker sensation.
Lastly, I verbalize to my clients that it is necessary for them to soap up and come to me CLEAN. This is common courtesy. I mince no words. I should not be expected to work on someone who smells badly. I won’t do it!
I hope you work at this and become accomplished. There are too many electrologists that feel uncomfortable working on the genital area. They have their reasons and they should be respected. This area can do funny things to your back and neck. I personally do everything I can to watch my own positioning and it can still be too much.
You asked a very good question and good luck with everything.
Dee
