Nervous - need advice about electrology in NY

I’ve finally made the decision to have electrology treatments on the random hairs on my chin. They’re quite coarse, and the reading I’ve done online makes me think that blend might be the best method for my case.

I have narrowed my choice of electrologist down to two. The first office is the best rated in NYC, but only offers thermolysis. The second office seems well reviewed enough and offers all three methods (thermolysis, galvanic and blend).

I very concerned about the time (and $ investment) it will take for me to get this area cleared. I’m also extremely nervous about the possibility of scarring (pitting?). My skin is very fair and quite sensitive.

The nerves are keeping me from moving forward. I’m having a very tough time making a decision. Does anyone know of a top-notch electrologist in NYC?

There are many top-notch electrologists in NYC.

Your decision is a good one to get electrolysis. Blend would be very good, but so is thermolysis. Someone skilled can make it happen for you no matter what the modality.

Why don’t you start with Arlene Batz in Queens? Is that too far a trek for you? Use the search feature above. I believe James Walker has posted some others in the area. The Gior siblings are on Long Island and people have been happy with their work.Maybe some actual consumers will report back and advise you as well.

Be sure to stress to anyone you see that you are afraid of overtreatment and do not want any scarring. Believe me, any electrologist that I know doesn’t want an unhappy client, so they will always be careful. A reminder never hurts though. Always say what is on your mind so there is no fuzziness on either side. Ask your questions and state your expectations. Get a conversation going and give your electrologist feedback.

Thank you so much for your response, Dee. It’s very helpful. Queens and LI are both quite a trek for me (Queens less so, of course). I’m hoping to find someone in Manhattan. I have read many good reviews for Ronni Kolotkin, but she only offers thermolysis.

I have heard that thermolysis carries more scarring risk than the other two modalities. Is this correct? Would blend be a safer bet?

I will take your advice and be sure to stress my fears about scarring.

Again, thank so much for your help. Like any person new to this, I have so many questions!

Oh, yes go to Ronni even though she is a thermolysis electrologist. Any modality of electrolysis can cause scarring if the area is overtreated, but with someone who has skill and common sense, this is not going to happen to you. Any modality of electrolysis can damage a hair follicle for good! I hope I didn’t confuse you about that in the previous post.

TEMPORARY skin reaction is NOT the same as SCARRING. Whatever you see after a facial treatment should fade away with a little time (within a week) and sometimes, body work can take several weeks. Just remember to give that important feedback to your electrologist, positive and negative, so adjustments can be made if neccasary. This hair removal stuff is not easy or quick because hair is very tough. We have to strive for good balance and timing in order to defeat any hair that is bothersome.

Let us know about your experience and try to go into this with a positive calmness if you can.

Dee

Thanks again for your help, Dee.

You didn’t confuse me at all - I understand that any modality will eventually get rid of my problem, but have heard that blend and galvanice are best for my situation.

Does this mean you’re aware of Ronni and her good reputation? That makes me feel much better. I will actually be going to one of Ronni’s associates. I do wonder though why her office only offers thermolysis.

Any chance you’ve heard of Monique Geraud at Hairless NYC Clinic? She’s the other practitioner I have found good reviews about.

Thanks for your thorough explanation regarding temporary side effects. I expect I’ll have some major redness since I’m so pale! I’ll make sure to keep my electrologist posted.

You really are so helpful. Thanks again.

I do not know Ronni, but she has been mentioned here on hairtell in a positive light. There are many electrologists that focus on one of three modalities only because that’s what they feel most comfortable with or that is what was taught in their electrolysis training program. I personally believe that all three methods should be learned so one can do it all. Personally, I do thermolysis, specifically, the PicoFlash variation and I incorporate Blend into my practice for certain situations or if the client outright wants that option. I was doing MicroFalsh thermolysis, but have now taken it up to Pico as of a month ago. I don’t do galvanic only (too slow), but I know how to do galvanic. Why would I choose galvanic if the other two modalities work and speed up the process of hair removal? Paying clients are not going to lay still for this kind of electrolysis too easy.

Haven’t heard of Monique, but that is the beauty of this lively, up todate hair removal forum - you can check her out and come back and help our hairtell brothers and sisters with a recommendation. Hairtell consumers are the most unselfish people, because they do the footwork and then come back and share the good news with others. You are invited to keep a diary here as well, just keep it on one thread, okay?

Just start your hunt with knowledge about how electrolysis works and compare what the different practitioners can offer you.

Thanks and happy hunting,
Dee

Thanks, Dee. Again, you have provided incredibly helpful feedback! Thanks especially for offering your thougts on the various modalities.

I wish I could see Arlene Batz but it would take me over an hour to get to her by public transportation (my only option). She seems to be the best in the NYC area, but I just don’t think regular visits would be possible or realistic…

I will try for a consultation with Ronni. I have also heard good things about Danna Homburger and might make an appointment with her as well. I will be sure to report back about my experiences so that others might learn from them.

I might also start a new NYC referral thread…

Again, thank you for so much for your very selfless help!!
