I started going to this person this winter and I feel like I’m not getting the best quality treatment I could be…
But I want to get some more educated takes on the matter.
Issue #1
She doesn’t change her gloves after opening the door, answering the phone, grabbing the appointment book and handing it to someone else, etc. Is this really dangerous to me in any way? It bothers me nonetheless.
Issue #2
She lets her co-worker in the room when I am partially undressed and discusses non-urgent matters while I am exposed. She introduced me to her as I lay half-naked and humiliated on the chair. Are most places this open?
Issue#3
I feel some traction when she is working. Sometimes I can hear a hair break or feel more than one being grabbed at a time and it kills me. I actually want to cry when this happens. I work so hard not to do anything to these hairs that torture me day in and day out, and then I pay to have them (what feels like) tweezed! Is this inevitable? I mean, I know I have a lot of fine hairs overlapping on the sides of my face, so is it bound to happen that occasionally more than one will be grabbed and that old ones might break off? Are my expectations just too high?
Issue #4
I’m getting a lot of ingrown hairs. Is this a sign that the hair is being tweezed or is it normal for new growth to come in this way?
Issue #5
She cannot see a lot of the hairs that I see in my mirror at home. I fear that her magnification is not up to par. What kind of magnification should I expect from a good electrologist? I have a lot of coarse hairs, but the finer ones get overlooked.
Is this enough to make me give up on this place? The trouble is, I don’t know where else to go. I would just be guessing with the phone book again. I know it was recently posted, but does anyone (please!) know of a great electrologist in the detroit area?
So do you think I settling for mediocrity out of desperation or is this all normal stuff?
She should change gloves before coming back to treatment. It is called cross contamination. Touching all those objects that have been touched, then coming back to treatment does not follow aseptic technique. You might say, “Please do not touch me with those contaminated gloves.”
Your treatment should be not be interrupted. The treatment room door should be locked to prevent anyone from entering. You might say, “Is there a lock for this door? I am really uncomfortable when people come in during my treatment.”
Some traction can be felt, but hearing the hair break and feeling multiple hairs being yanked out is not okay. Your expectations are not too high. You might say, “I think I felt that hair being tweezed.”
Ingrown hair indicates that the follicle was not properly treated. It is a sign that the hairs were broken off in the follicle and NOT properly treated. You might say, “I am experiencing ingrown hairs and understand that this means the hairs were broken off during treatment.”
It would make sense to focus on clearing the coarse hairs first. The reason is that the electrologist might want to change epilator settings between 2 sizes of hair and they might want to change the needle size. However, it certainly appears that you have concerns that she is ignoring.
When you call other electrologists, ask them about the issues you mentioned here - see if they address them during the conversation. Make an appointment for a 15 minute treatment with several - then see what the differences are.
You might write your current electrologist a letter (or say those things above if you are comfortable) and tell her about the concerns. It angers me that there are electrologists out there doing these things that make us all look bad.
I guess I know in my gut that all of these things should not be happening, but for some reason I feel too shy to speak up about it. I wish that were not the case. I just feel like I don’t want to second-guess her when she is the “expert.” I need to get the courage to voice my concerns.
Luckily, someone messaged me with some recommendations so I will be making some phone calls tomorrow. I want to feel confident that my treatment is working and that all the money I am putting into this is well worth it…So I will continue to look for the best that is out there.
Thanks for letting me know that I am not being unrealistic in my expectations. It gives me hope that I will find what I am looking for eventually.
I’m also in the Detroit area, and was wondering if any of the recommendations you got worked out for you… if so please let me know, I’m also looking for a recommendation in the area (and you were definitely right to be very concerned about the gloves and privacy issues!!). Thanks very much
i am not familiar with that place, no. but would love to know if anyone has heard anything about it.
Det_Girl, i sent you a message with 2 names i was given by another member. i have yet to try them out as i’ve been seeing a different woman at the same clinic i was at previously.
perhaps i am wrong, but it doesn’t seem like there are that many options in this area.
